3D Printed Train Wheels
A lathe is a good way for small, low production unless it is CNC unit. Steel is a bad material from a rust point of view. I have a company producing some prototype units, CNC and plating and pickups. Built in to a pf wheel set in two forms. Or made and kit to add to existing wheel sets. I dist wasn't too say to much as the project has left cad stage and is in the machine shop. Watch this space.......

8 wide rolling stock dimensions
I build UK trains 8 wide, I like the flexibility of the scale for detailing, the biggest challenge is the length of the cars, negotiating the standard curve or switch.

3D Printed Train Wheels
Just looked at the pictures zoomed in,I wonder what the substrate is they used along with the metal. I wonder what the wear and conductivity will be. I am going to attenpt to mill these out of Aluminium

My LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard
Thank you 'locoworks' for pointing out my 'typo' I have fixed it up. Indeed you are correct. Nigel designed a whole bunch of Locos for GNR and LNER including corridor tenders and articulated carriages. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigel_Gresley#Locomotives_designed_by_Gresley

steam engine. newbie advice please.
You can drive the 9v motor on power functions track using a power functions IR receiver, battery pack and a converter cable. The 9v motor has power connection on the front.

steam engine. newbie advice please.
If you feel like spending the money you could pick up an emerald night with a powerfunctions kit. Its a great model with some clever building techniques. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40%7CR40&_sacat=0&_nkw=emerald+night+lego&_sop=12

3d train wheel models
Its actually for CNC milling out of aluminium or brass. exporting from LDraw is above my skill level. I hate to re invent the wheel if some one has already done it, If not then I will have to CAD one.

London Transport 0-6-0pt Pannier ex-GWR 5700 (WIP)
Hi SRB, the larger ones are vinyl cut using a CriCut machine, I found online some one had made a British transport ttf file so it was not to tricky. This was only good for larger decals though. Small ones are for now printed on label paper and cut out. When my requirement is big enough I will have professional stickers made up using the clear plastic and white ink solution. My other rule of thumb with decals is never to 'make a part' with them, only to use decals to create the painted signs on the trains, I think it is a slippery slope when decals are used to create, round windows, windscreen wipers and so on.

Custom Lego track
The switch I am constructing at the moment using code 250 is 5 Track pieces long - so 25" I hope to have some high speed 9v switches for my long stock. I also got a rail bender from Switch Crafters, OR Wow it makes things easier, also the Aluminium is alot easier to bend.. http://www.switchcrafters.com/ez-catalog?account=X381875;search=RB-215%2F250;limit=product;path=16

6 Wide base used in 8 Wide
Hey EdSmith, you may find that your 6 wide plates are too short for most rolling stock in 8 wide if you are keeping things to scale.

My LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard
As I mentioned above, I felt the front looked fat, I have spent some time to try an narrow the front but now I feel that I have lost those clean lines, Any thoughts? Stay as I had it before?

Uaai 839 heavy railroad transport
WOW, thats impressive. I would love to see how the swinging arms are built. and how all the wheels under are constructed to go around the curves. VERY clever

My LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard
I agree, your boiler is 5 wide and mine is 6, but the smoke box fairing on yours is 4 and mine is 6 which is what I think makes it look fat. I am also unhappy with the fat appearance. I am going to try to slim the fairing down to 5 wide and slope the sides in. Stand by.

My LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard
Hi "Srbandrews", below is a picture of the drive train, "Selander" is correct, there are similar bogey connections to the Emerald Night with the front bogie being articulated. Also "Selander" good eye, I have changed the text above to read M motor, it originally was going to be large ones, but I could not get it in the space I had. Thank you both for the nice feedback

My LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard
I know that many A4's have gone before me but here is my Take, I have to credit all the people have gone before me go give me inspiration and ideas / solutions. The model ended up at 1014 parts, 63 studs long including the tender, 8 wide and 10 tall. I have the Bricklink orders in so we will see if concept design works in brick. Normally there are a few challenges translating from one tho the other. I decided to go with power functions for this model, I used dual M motors in the boiler, and IR receiver and battery in the tender. I will more than likely convert this to 9v once I once I have finished my pickups project. More to come later. Factual blurb: Number 4468 Mallard is a London and North East Railway (LNER) Class A44-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive built at Doncaster, England in 1938. It is historically significant as the holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives.
