[MOC] Baggage Belt Loader
Lucio Switch replied to Superkoala's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingLately there are some really cool airport stuff, and this is one of these for sure!! I saw a WIP of a big scale tecnic aiplane here on EB some times ago (it was when I joined EB, if I don't remember wrong), but I lost track of it. Honestly, sometimes the idea came to me, but I lack experience with the airplanes.

My build of Lucio's Cranetruck, Dumptruck and Tracktortruck
Lucio Switch replied to JDL1967's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThose pics are a bit touching for me. I couldn't afford to have all my models build together! I'm happy that someone can and let me see them! What to say...awesome collection!!

[MOC] Crane Truck
Lucio Switch replied to Lucio Switch's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThe PL on Rebrickable is updated with your suggestions. About the IR channels, if I'm not wrong again, the right sequence should be 4-3-1-2 instead of 1-2-4-3. Can you confirm it?

[WIP] International Lonestar Truck, 5000+ parts
Lucio Switch replied to Aleh's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI think it's true for the Tractor Truck and for the Crane Truck (31 studs width). The Dump Truck was a bit smaller (29 studs width) and the ACT even more (27 studs width). About your Moc...it's already better than I initially thought. Just there is something odd on the bonnet. I don't think it's a problem of skills, simply I think you chosen a model with a complicated shape, honestly I have no Ideas to how it could be build better.

[MOC] Crane Truck
Lucio Switch replied to Lucio Switch's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThanks! According to Bricklink the cost is around 2000€, without SBrick and hoses. But I build using most of what I already have in my boxes (I try to buy less parts as possible, only if I don't find good solutions). So someone with a good collections could have most of the parts needed. In facts even you have a huge quote of the parts needed. Good luck with the Lonestar! It's not easy at all to reproduce it's shape! What a memory! I envy you! Thanks for the reminder...seems that it worked Thanks Jim! I really appreciate! Now I have to think about what I have to do to achive the pneumatic tag! About the good looking I can't answer you...I try to do my best. About the rigidity...an disproportionate quantity of pins and beams....if I remember well, of 8200+ parts, 3300 are pins. Nope, Blakbird reviewed the previous one, the Dump Truck. This has a similar (aestetically) cab, but all the rest is different....I start to think that this is the reason why this Moc has gone a little unnoticed...relatively!

Number of Parts used in Technic Sets
Lucio Switch replied to valenciaeric's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingMaybe TLG does it to increase the number of parts, but I think that we have to consider that: 1. Maybe the B model needs the part that we think it is not necessary in the A-Model 2. Maybe they have a stock of parts that need to be used 3. We don't know the cost per unit of the producing process, maybe is cheaper to produce 2 parts of a type than 1 of another. Just suppositions

Purism
Lucio Switch replied to Erik Leppen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingTaking Sariel's list as reference, personally I would change a couple of positions in this way: 1. custom stickers 2. custom remote-control systems (SBrick and such) 3. custom lighting (Brickstuff, Lifelites) 4. custom power supplies (BuWizz) 5. custom tires 6. custom-chromed Lego pieces 7. custom non Lego rims 8. 3D-printed pieces 9. painting Lego pieces 10. cutting/gluing Lego pieces 11. modified Lego electronics (e.g. gutted 8878 batteries) 12. third-party motors 13. counterfeit pieces Personally I stop at point 2 (even if the ACT is at point 8, and I'm ashamed of the fact that a part of that could be done with Lego parts). MOCs built until point 7-8 draw my attention, over not. I never "disliked" a video, but the point 13 makes me really tempted to do it.

[MOC] Crane Truck
Lucio Switch replied to Lucio Switch's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI know that's possible but there is to consider the proportion to this scale, I mean, a single beam thick stage would appear a bit creepy, and ingreesing the waight all the structure need to be more sturdy. I don't think that an LA can have more power than a pneumatic cylinder, moreover to do that (ignoring the fact that all the pneumatic system will loose sense) you need the room for all the axles and gears needed for the movements... again, I'm not saying that it's impossible, simply that I don't find it so easy, indeed quite the opposite. I'm glad that you started again to work on your crane, I really curious to see it in action. Yes it will be...at at least is what I believe!

[MOC] Crane Truck
Lucio Switch replied to Lucio Switch's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingWell, you have to consider the weight that a 3 stage boom will have, moreover it should be esthetically enjoyable, so no thin 3rd stage or bulky assembly. I'm not saying that it's not possible, simply I'm not able. Why so big?...good question...I don't know, simply I like big things. I always liked them. One of my side hobby is static modellism. I just build a couple of things but some of the largest thing that you can buy, the CVN-65 Enterprise in scale 1:350 (1 meter long) and the space schuttle in 1:144 with all the launch platform (60cm height) and I'm in the way to build an F 14 A in 1:48 scale (the 1:32 was too expensive). The day that I could buy a place big enough to work on cars for hobby I shall leave Lego (probably I will die with a Lego brick in my hand) Honestly no, I'm fine with the proportions. I built it a bit narrowed compared to the tractor truck, despite the same scale, for choice I'm glad that someone noticed them. Well, it's the 40th anniversary, so I though that it was the better way for me to celebrate it! Maybe you can do it easily, me not for sure! I have difficulty to figure out how it could be possible considering the weight that should be added and the momentum that it will generate. But I would be very happy to be proven wrong.

[MOC] Crane Truck
Lucio Switch replied to Lucio Switch's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingFirst of all, thank you all guys for the nice comments! I really appreciate all of them! THANKS THANKS!! Yes the chassis is completely new, like I said before, I was inspired by the MOD done by Efferman to my previous Tractor Truck. I'm not able to use LDD, I have not digged in the file, but the principle was clear enough. This gives a much more robust front suspensions structure and it allowed me to built the chassis with a lower profile in the front section. I just had to find the right compromises, for now ,it seems to work, but I doubt to be able to do more than a MOC per year. Bat truck - the revenge! Well, there are different points that could be improved, for sure you are right about that one! I can not say that I'm completely satisfied about how it rotates, but I thought that it works good enough considering weight, dimensions, more than 360° rotation with all the hoses and pf cable in the turntable, and my patience that reached the limit! Jockes aside, if the problem could be a too fast rotation, could a train controller be a solution? For sure it could be a good improvement. I thought about something like that but I had some trouble, anyway I will think if it's possible to do something. I'm trying to spread Ideas for the TC11 contest! Personally, I proceeded by steps building it with bricks as I proceeded with the digital version. I'm not yet able to build it completely digitally and then in Bricks, at least not a so huge MOC. About parts count, I have not checked, but I guess that at least 2000 parts of the 8000 are pins. Well Eric, time passes, it is time to move on! Don't take me in the wrong way, but I'm glad to have generated this dilemma. Soon you will have news! It's necessary to see how the valves are working to have enough control of the pneumatic functions...and to avoid damages. Seems that my valves are too hard for a 24T gear with friction. Well, to be fair there are a couple of person of the community that knows about this project and give me (one way or in another) some helps. But I think that this last MOC is in part the result of the experience gained in this years reading EB, so, in some way the community is involved. Anyway I saw your last MOC, it's true that you received ideas and feedback, but if I were you, I'd be a little more optimistic!

[MOC] Crane Truck
Hi to everybody! I'm here to present my new Moc. I started building this crane truck about 6 months ago with the main idea of solving the problems related to a failed attempt of a crane for my previous truck. IMG_1608 by Lucio Switch, su Flickr Starting from the cab...despite the undeniable resemblance to the cab of the dump truck (with a bit of the tractor truck), it has slightly different dimensions, and the add of some new details/functions, forced me to revise it completely. In fact, in addition to the "standard" opening doors, this time, as on real trucks, the cab is suspended, while maintaining the tilting function and the working steering wheel and the front grid is openable. Moreover the seats are pneumatically suspended via 2 (1+1) 1x5 pneumatic cylinders. The chassis has the tractions on the 2 last axles, they are driven by 4 XL Motors and uses 2 Servo Motors to steering the first two axles (with different turning radius). The first two axles use independent suspensions. In this case I was inspired by the Mod of the chassis of my Tractor Truck done by Efferman ... that has a perfect shape for a fake v8. On the back there are 2 live axles (with a total of 24 hard shock absorbers). Between the first two axles there are two small pneumatic pumps moved by two L Motors. In addition to that, on the chassis are present 2 Li-Po Battery, 5 Leds for lights and 2 SBricks. Behind the cabin there is the base of the crane, it contains the front stabilizers, extendable via a M motor (connected to one SBrick), 6 pneumatic valves, moved by an M motor each, 4 IR receivers to control the 6 valves motors plus 2 other M motors, one to rotate the crane and one for the winch. The 4 receivers take power from a port of an SBrick. Finally the crane ... well, the classic design of this type of crane with the upper arm offset (as on 8258 for instance) built on this scale, gave me big problems twisting the whole structure ... and a lot of headaches. One day I came across by chance in a truck with a Cormach crane, it presented a unique design that would solve the twist problem. So inspiring to this design, I have developed my crane, which consists of a telescopic upper arm (extension via 2x 1x11 pneumatic cylinders) supported by two side arms moved by 2+1 2x11 pneumatic cylinder each. It isn't able to lift heavy loads, but it works and, considering the masses involved, I'm fine with that. Now some numbers: Length: 86,4cm 108studs Width: 24,8cm 31studs, 28cm 35studs with mirrors Height: 39,2cm 49studs Weight: 8.6 kg Total number of parts: 8000 PF elements: M motor: 9 L Motor: 2 XL Motor: 4 Servo Motor: 2 PF LED: 5 Lipo Battery: 2 ..and a couple of wire extensions Pneumatic Elements: Small pumps: 2 1x5 Cylinder: 2 Medium Cylinder old: 4 Medium Cylinder new: 2 1x11 Cylinder: 2 2x11 Cylinder: 6 Valve: 6 ..and several meters of pipes. For more pictures check my Flickr Album: Crane Truck Flickr Album And this is the video: To conclude, I would say that, in some way it was a new and interesting experience for me. Due to circumstances beyond our control, I was forced to transfer my Lego room in the basement, comfortable although perhaps a bit rustic but not directly connected with my apartment. This, coupled with the fact that my free time has been drastically reduced, has led me to review my usual workflow. So this is my first model built before digitally and then physically. This way allowed me to use better my free time and to select and pick up only the needed parts to build, reducing drastically the mess in the living room. Also part of the work for the BI is already done, I'll done them for sure, but I don't have idea when they will be ready. I'm afraid that it will be a huge job! I hope you like it!

[MOCs] Pickup & Hatchback
Lucio Switch replied to Madoca 1977's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingGreat to see some new MOCs from you! Always at top level in every aspect. The pick-up is really neat and have great performances, the type R is a bit too F&F for my taste (in the color scheme), but seems to be very funny to drive! Great job as always!

Technic Photography
Lucio Switch replied to Werlu Ulcur's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingNot necessarily, for small things is possible to do that in "DIY mode" with cheap bulbs (with the same light temperature) and desk lamps from a hobby store. Obviously a DSLR and a tripod are mandatory. Anyway, since my dimensions problems, I spent more or less 250€ for two softbox with 4 bulbs each, 2 spot lights with 1 bulb each for a total of 2000w (...equivalent since those are energy saving bulbs) and a 3x16m black cardboard background. Those are really cheap gear that can hardly be classified not even as amateur equipment, but they do the job. It could work, but I will try first to use the 2 main lights for the background and the 3rd as Key light plus a white cardboard for the fill lights...give it a try it is a 0 costs. I also recommend to use Lightroom, like I said before, post processing is mandatory, even more if you shoot in RAW.

Technic Photography
Lucio Switch replied to Werlu Ulcur's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingDespite the post processing is almost mandatory, starting from a good pic can help to reach the desired result with a small effort. For what I know you have to illuminate the white background with twice the power that you use to illuminate the subject...eg, if you use a 100w lamp for the subject you need a 200w lamp for the background (or 2 x 100w). Doing that the background tends to be overexposed compared to the subject so really white.
