42172 McLaren P1 MODs and Improvements
And here is my next release Pimp up my McLaren v0.5: Digital model: https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42172-pimp-up-my-mclaren/history/v0.5/42172 - Pimp up my McLaren.mpd Building Instructions: https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42172-pimp-up-my-mclaren/history/v0.5/42172 - Pimp up my McLaren_Book1.pdf https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42172-pimp-up-my-mclaren/history/v0.5/42172 - Pimp up my McLaren_Book2.pdf New features: I improved the shifting process by replacing the universal joints with strong CV joints between paddle shifter and gearbox. Now it works very smooth without any backlash. And I improved the door mechanism by replacing most of the involved friction pins with non friction pins or axles. I added some reinforcements to the main door hinge and the lock which catches the closing door and holds it in place. Now the door opens easy and precise, keeps well in opened position, is more stable (less wabbly) and the closing door will always be safely catched in place. Next steps: I will add some final renderings to the building instructions, create part list and publish v1.0 on https://rebrickable.com/users/jb70/mocs/ soon.

42172 McLaren P1 MODs and Improvements
I made some more improvements on the gearbox and DNR section with v0.4: optimized bearing of axles in gearbox and DNR section to reduce friction changed gear ratio in main drive shaft between rear axle and DNR section from 20/12 * 12/20 to 16/16 * 16/16 This results in the same total gear ratio as v0.3, but less velocity and more torque on the clutch to get the clutch engaged when the gearbox blocks. That happens sometimes, if you change gears via HOG switch under load when the car is moving fast. Changing gears via paddles seem to be more precise (or just slower) so that I do not see the gearbox blocking. some color optimizations some improvements on the building instructions Now I am satisfied with the gearbox. It works as fine and smooth as it used to be for a pimped up supercar. The new gearbox elements 3584 and 4159 offer a complete new gearbox design with a true 7-gear or 8-gear sequential gearbox compared to the previous supercars (2 gearboxes with 4-gear plus 2-gear combined). This comes much more close to real car's design of a gearbox. 42172 McLaren P1 MODs and Improvements
And here we have: A pimped up gearbox! Optimized 1st gear by omitting 2 gear meshes replaced by a direct connection Optimized housing with improved stiffness reducing friction Geared up by factor 4.3 (pistons move much faster, but still fluently) Replaced the red rubber band by a stiffer white rubber band to improve proper positioning of the gear stepper Simple, but efficient Gear Block between 7th and 1st gear (2 Half Bushes block the gear shifter fork to move in neutral gear), Neutral can still be selected by DNR switch. Here you see the original gearbox layout (1st gear engaged in red, V8 engine in dark red, electric motor in green): And here you see the pimped up gearbox layout (optimized 1st gear engaged in red) and 2 gear meshes swapped (in dark grey and tan sections) to gear up: And last but not least a preview of building instructions including all pimped up MODs so far (HOG steering, HOG shifting, this Gearbox): https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42172-pimp-up-my-mclaren/history/v0.3/42172 - Pimp up my McLaren_v0.3.pdf https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42172-pimp-up-my-mclaren/history/v0.3/42172 - Pimp up my McLaren.mpd

And here we have a gear indicator, that can also be used for HOG shifting. I reversed the order of the paddle shifter, so that pulling the right paddle shifts one gear up, as it was the real car. The mechanics fitted perfectly underneath the gloves compartment of the dashboard and needed only some small adjustments to be fixed. The gear indicator turns 45° per gear switch. https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42172-pimp-up-my-mclaren/history/v0.2/42172 - Pimp up my McLaren.mpd

Box 3 has been finished as original digital model: https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42172-pimp-up-my-mclaren/omr/42172 - McLaren P1.mpd This model is complete now, although it contains some mockups for new parts that were not yet available at ldraw.org. They will be added later. But for starting our MODs it will be OK that way. I will now start pimping the front axle by adding Ackerman steering and HOG steering.

Please welcome to share some of your ideas for MODs and Improvements to the new 42172 McLaren P1 1:8 LEGO Supercar! I am just starting to build this model, but I already have some ideas to pimp up this model with: - HOG steering - Paddle shifters in reverse order (pulling right to shift up) - HOG shifting - some improvements on the gearbox (e.g. limiter between neutral and 7th gear) - and some other cool stuff I am building the real model and a digital model in parallel, so you can follow and use the digital model for your investigations and MODs: The original set without MODs has been finished as digital model, so far: https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42172-pimp-up-my-mclaren/omr/42172 - McLaren P1.mpd

My MOC is also based on the @efferman MOC. Many thankx to you for this brilliant redesign of the steering mechamism, works much better that way! Based on that I made the following optimizations: 1. Prevent left/right control levers from flipping over by using 3L beams instead of 2L liftarms. With this change the 5L beams will always stay on top. 2. Add additional support to the collective pitch control allowing 2 additional friction pins to keep the selected leverage while using cyclic pitch control. 3. Modified front hub using an "illegal" connection with 7L axes very slightly bend, but fitting nice and adding stability to the hub. Plus some minor design changes. @CelloFellow Great improvement! I modified it this way to avoid collisions with the 65487 Technic Pin Connector next to it: Finally I made some reinforcements to the tail: And some reinforcement to the landing gear:

With Pimp up my Ferrari v0.7 I made a few more improvements: Spring-loaded Doors By adding a technic shock absorber the wing doors are now better fixed to keep in either closed or open state. This allows to remove several friction pins in the door mechanism and replace them by non-friction pins or axles. The complete door mechanism works much smoother, now. You can open the door either manually or by pushing the yellow levers underneath the hood. By adding a simple grey 1x1 round tile on top of a technic 1/2 pin the door is now fixed in closed state and allows the moving-to-the-side-part of the door to come back into closed position without colliding with chassis. Foldable Roof Many Thanx to @zonoskar for this cool MOD. I just made minimal changes like adding a technic axle in the middle, adding some 1/2 pins to keep the roof stable in unfolded position and modified the holders on top of the windscreen to keep in black. Some pictures with more details: Here are the links to the PDF instructions and MPD digital model, if you are interested in more details: https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42143-pimp-up-my-ferrari/pics/v0.7/42143 - Pimp up my Ferrari_BOOK1.pdf https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42143-pimp-up-my-ferrari/pics/v0.7/42143 - Pimp up my Ferrari_BOOK2.pdf https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42143-pimp-up-my-ferrari/pics/v0.7/42143 - Pimp up my Ferrari.mpd I am now finalizing release v1.0 to be published on rebrickable.com in the next days.

42143 Ferrari Daytona SP3 Mods & Improvments
With Pimp up my Ferrari v0.5 I made a few more improvements: An easy removable engine cover with just 3 different parts. Replace 2 blue axle pins by 2 red 2L axles and replace the orange 3L pin with bush by a black 2L pin (stays in the engine when the cover is removed). Now you can easily remove and reattach the engine cover, if you like to see the V12 cylinders working. An very simple but effective MOD on the levers that should hold the rear hood open. Replace the 2 black 2L pins and 1L beams by 2 black ball pins. Now the hood really stays open, until you want to close it. I replaced the yellow 7L axle under the rear hood by a gray one, better fitting to the gray frame around the engine window. Thanks @jbuccino for your review. This has been fixed in v0.5. And finally the PDF instructions have been completed until the end of box 2. This is about 2/3 of the complete build. A few pictures with the latest MODs: Here are the links to the PDF instructions and MPD digital model, if you are interested in more details: https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42143-pimp-up-my-ferrari/pics/v0.5/42143 - Pimp up my Ferrari_BOOK1.pdf https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42143-pimp-up-my-ferrari/pics/v0.5/42143 - Pimp up my Ferrari_BOOK2.pdf https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42143-pimp-up-my-ferrari/pics/v0.5/42143 - Pimp up my Ferrari.mpd

42143 Ferrari Daytona SP3 Mods & Improvments
With Pimp up my Ferrari v0.4 I made some more improvements: PDF building instructions are now available until end of Box 1. That is about 1/3 of the complete build, but containing all the technical mods and the chassis is ready to drive in that stage. Modified car bottom with some nice open windows, that give a clear look to all relevant technic features inside. Some color changes as well for a clean look. Optimized geartrain: The first gear mesh between differential and gearbox has been reduced from 24/8 to 20/12. Instead the last gear mesh between DNR box and the engine has been speeded up from 20/12 to 24/8. So the final speed of the engine keeps the same, but the gearbox itself runs slower and produces less friction. Some joints between gearbox and DNR needed to be modified as well to allow free run of the new 24t gear behind the DNR box. The knob gears of the gearbox have been swapped, so they do not collide with the U-Joints of the geartrain. The driver's steering wheel is geared down by 8/24 instead of 12/20 before. Some pictures with details: If you are interested in more details, have a closer look to the PDF or the digital model: https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42143-pimp-up-my-ferrari/pics/v0.4/42143 - Pimp up my Ferrari_150_DPI.pdf https://bricksafe.com/files/jb70/42143-pimp-up-my-ferrari/pics/v0.4/42143 - Pimp up my Ferrari.mpd Building instructions and part list are still Work in Progress. I am looking forward to include more MODs...
