Back on topic, I loathe sets with a lack of functions relative to the part count - e.g. 42096, 42125 and many more.

Given how they're marketing it (see the display-biased description on the website and the 18+ label) I guess their pricing is based on their "supercar logic", which sucks HEWGE.

I reckon the four-motor-cum-gearbox approach makes sense for a bulldozer. You want independent motors for each track to handle the model's weight; the other moving parts are light enough to work smoothly with a gearbox and, in terms of play value, don't really need to work simultaneously. This isn't the case with the Liebherr: multiple sections of the arm need to move at the same time - and the arm is pretty heavy to boot. My only issue is the price of this thing and no, no amount of software, new moulds and licensing gibberish can justify the same price point as the Liebherr with pretty much the same part count but half the electronics.

Ah, I see what you mean now. Yes, that would indeed be the issue - with three motors driving all the functions, including drive (which in the case of a tracked vehicle counts as two functions), you couldn't move the blade while driving. I guess it's a solution that works fine with models where you aren't likely to use more than two functions at a time (e.g. tow trucks and cherry pickers), but becomes kind of awkward with tracked machinery.

Nope, you just need three motors for eight functions driven in pairs.

Indeed. I used this mechanism for my cherry picker and it works flawlessly; then again, the model only weighs 1.8 kg, whereas the CAT probably weighs at least twice as much.

Superbly crafted. I love the manual drive & steering option; the pneumatic servo switch is ingenious!

The model's probably too heavy to work safely (i.e. parts not breaking) and effectively with that kind of setup.

Since TLG seem to have embraced remote-controlled gearboxes (see 42114 and 42131), it'd be nice to see them on smaller, less-pricey sets. I'd like to see a 42008-style tow truck with all the functions driven by a mere handful (three, I guess) motors and a deliciously complex gearbox.

But if there are four motors in all, with two for the tracks and one for the wave selector, that leaves only one motor to drive the functions, ergo only one can be driven at a time (in addition to the tracks, of course).

These: I hadn't noticed them until Mr Jos pointed them out - I instinctively thought they were the usual angled 6x4 beams, but on closer inspection they seem to have a much smaller angle (not sure it's 90°, though).

Really enjoyable review - with your delivery you could talk about paint drying and still make it sound compelling. I wonder if there's room to rework the front suspension using the technique from the Grove crane.
