RoscoPC's Lego Technic Racecar Stable
nychase replied to DLuders's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingWe actually chose to pass on building these two beauties. We didn't feel like they were finished in the same manner as the other 9 so it was better to not include them in the "set". Furthermore, when I spoke to Rosco originally and discussed his models he didn't refer to these as part of the "set" either. They are still great models though!...and certainly looking forward to the next one (and the 20 after that!)

RoscoPC's Lego Technic Racecar Stable
nychase replied to DLuders's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI sourced the parts primarily from Bricklink. It was 63 orders I think. I also sourced some of the parts from my personal collection but as time went on it proved easier to just order everything possible then try to pick parts by hand. Unfortuenently with 15k parts you are bound to make mistakes... so there were moments where additional orders had to be made as the build process progressed.

Announcement: MocPlans.com
nychase replied to nychase's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingTo all those comments wondering about other Themed MOC's. Of course I will open the site up to MOC's of all types. Priority was put on Technic/Model Team primarily because the people in this section know me and I know them. It was logical to try to launch the site with the people I know so that if there were any issues I could solve them on a small scale before opening up the site to the public at large. If anyone is curious how DLuders even found out about the blog update on the main page of MOCplans??? The only thing I changed was my signature 2 days ago....quite the curious fellow! Thats why we all count on him as our Technic News aggrigator....better than any RSS feed!

RoscoPC's Lego Technic Racecar Stable
nychase replied to DLuders's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI would probably be the best to comment on this. At the moment the 9 cars have an avg value of 2200 total. Each car is between 200 and 300 on the 6 month rolling avg on BL. Most cars are in the 200 range with only the Ferrari 126c and the 66' Lotus up around 300. Keep in mind though that some parts will be more expensive becuase you need them in bulk (the 3x1 slopes on the 66 Lotus for example).. There are SOME very rare parts but most can be color substituted and be just fine. Because Eric is a tyrant when it comes to "faithfull recreations" of peoples MOC's it was time consuming getting every last part in the original colors as designed by RoscoPC! Now, the irony is that I havn't even seen what the cars look like becuase they were only in my possession as a sorted mound of 15,000 parts! Best of luck to you on the build(s) and hope to have MOCplans up and running soon for all to enjoy!

Lego Technic in Winter
nychase replied to lilongwe's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI have to respectfully disagree. I recently finished building Han's Snowgroomer (The second video in the first post)and can tell you that its simply one of the most complex and well built models i have seen. It is unbelievably robust, well detailed and manages to ride that fine mixture of function and studded form that we all love. I highly recommend checking it out on HAN's website! FYI, the only changes I made were track and sprocket colors since black tracks and sprockets were not available when HAN made this model originally (before the REAL Technic Snowgroomer).

8421 Crane Boom issue
nychase replied to DarkShadow73's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI know it seems like I am repeating myself but trust me when I say I have spent the last 3 years looking for an acceptible solution. The Firgelli accuator works very very well for the price since it includes the motor built into such a compact size. Theres another guy thats posted on EB before that made all metal accuators that were designed to connect to Medium and XL motors but hes gone MIA in the last few months. If there is a strong enough desire for me to build the 8421 with this accuator to show everyone then just voice your opinion and I will get it going so we have a comparison to Alasdair's solution. I originally purchased the actuators to use on Jennifer Clarkes Baldwin crane which originally used a "lead-screw" which was completely bespoke.

8462 Pneumatic Tow Truck
nychase replied to DarkShadow73's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingOh! Your talking about This guy http://www.bricklink.com/store.asp?p=lar&itemID=35203414 Yeah, I have seen his stuff on ebay before. Always seems to have MISB sets. He had a bunch of 5542 Black Thunder's a while ago that he was selling off. Can't believe you can't get him to close a deal...I know if someone wanted to make an in person deal with me I would do it. Plus, who doesn't like cash?

8421 Crane Boom issue
nychase replied to DarkShadow73's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI just finished collected for HANS 8421XL and will be using one of the 100mm ones http://store.firgell...ts.asp?Cat=1822 Its possible it wont be strong enough to hold the HAN boom in which case I will double them up. The best part about these accuators is that they feature the motor as well as the accuator so its not as expensive as it seems. Ill let you know how it goes. I hated that I couldn't leave the 8421 "on display", and I lack the ability to create a decent working version of opposed LA's.

Whoa...Suddenly I like 8145
http://www.ebay.com/...=item2c697f6e00 First off, if this is you skyliner then hats off to you! I have ranted a few times about how much I struggled to find an affordable version of 8145 and when I finally did I thought the model was rubbish. Now...well this version just looks fantastic and I would love to have it. Plus...thats like 12k (6 from what I can see) in 19L flex axles according to the Boratko Store Prices. Of course some people on here will drool over the possibility of purchasing the model only to part it out. Let it be written..."This model shall not be parted-out"

Review: 8264 Hauler
nychase replied to Blakbird's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingSeriously? 2.5 years bump? If I had to mention anything about the set ....it would be how annoyingly rare (and expensive) the 5x11 yellow panels were right after HAN released his 6x6. They have come back to more tolerable levels now....but by no means "cheap".

Tips on work area when building a Technic set
nychase replied to paulrobinson's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingPretty much exactly the same. Above 1k parts requires some level of a sort. Building Custom Moc's is usually pretty easy though since you usually have everything sorted already from the collecting phase.

8445 Indy Storm
nychase replied to DarkShadow73's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI "accidently" just purchased 3 of them (I purchased a whole lot and there were 3 in there...all in unused condition) I will eventually put at least one into my bricklink store at a fair price. If you would be interested I am sure we could reach a deal. Its a nice set, uses flex system and has the rare 14L yellow hose and metallic silver wheels.

Announcement: MocPlans.com
nychase replied to nychase's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThat is absolutlely planned. I think many people utilize Nathan's system so it will be planned from the onset. I am not as familair with Basebrick but I will look into having it integrated into the many inventory systems. There will not be a monthly fee for the designer to share their MOC. Ideally, there will only be fees on the sold instructions and I will be upfront in saying it will be slightly cheaper than ebay. Glad to hear you are interested Skyliner. The hope is that talented designers with little web skills will be able to fully realize the value of the models and instructions they create. Your question gave me pause as I hadn't yet considered it. That being said, I think its really up to the designers. If they choose to not charge for the instructions then they did quite a bit of work for nothing (except maybe building a fan-base). It wont bother me in the slightest as the increased cost of hosting is quite minimal and spreading the word is still better. I can see many people choosing to offer certain designs for free and then charging as they have more followers. More on this in my reply bellow to Nathan Nathan, Thank you for your thoughts on the issue. I certainly understand why this may provide functionality that would clash with your current model for Rebrickable. I see our two site complimenting eachother quite nicely so we will need to talk about that further (privately). Part of the draw to this system is that the users will gain instant access to the instructions they purchase. The solution we have implemented (and are testing) is a compltely bespoke solution for handling that aspect as we deem it to be paramount to the sites success. In addition we will allow paypal to be used as a payment form but we also have a full merchant account allowing for direct payment methods (which will be adventageous with more people buying more instructions). As far as the commisions goes... the goal of the site is really to just break-even. I really wasn't intending on creating a cash cow by taking a fee from designers and I feel that the nominal amount I am going to charge reflects that goal. Another thing I need to mention to everyone is that there will also be security measures in place to strongly detur pirating of this copyrighted material. The last thing I want to do is create a system that leaves everyone just as vulnerable as they currently are to people ripping off their creations.

Announcement: MocPlans.com
nychase replied to nychase's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThats exactly the point of this site. I will be hosting everything and i will be taking care of the payment system, funds routing and advertising to draw people in to the "pay per moc" atmosphere. The draw to both the designers and the users is that everything will be in one unified space. You could almost think of it as each designer having their website on one big site of lego designers. For instance, when Paul comes out with a new model (which we all know he will) he will be able to easily notify anyone that has purchased his instructions in the past and those who haven't but signed up to get his notifications. And what if a designer like Jennifer Clark wanted to post instructions for some of her incredible mocs? Now she wouldn't have to worry about hosting them (adequate bandwidth and storage), collecting payments for them or even advertise for them. EDIT: I meant to also say that yes...designers will be able to handle their own accounts and the content provided (conforming to guidelines of course).

Announcement: MocPlans.com
nychase replied to nychase's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingAt the moment I only know-of/have Technic/Model team designers on board. I have not reached out to any others as I am not really exposed to them and wouldn't know who they are. So Sinner/Siegfried, please hold-off on moving it as my targeted audience was those people who read these threads. When its fully open I will make a seperate announcement.

Announcement: MocPlans.com
Hello All, In the next few weeks I will be launching a website that I hope will fill a massive void in the market and help to bridge the gaps between MOC designers and MOC re-creators (like myself). I have collected for and built countless MOC's over the last few years and have found it incredibly frustrating having an inconsistent product that changes between different designers and even within the same designer. To solve this problem I decided it might be best to build a site that would take the guess-work out of actually posting instructions and collecting income on those creations. As Sariel no doubt can tell you the most common question when posting a video on youtube or on facebook is inevitably...."where can I build this" or "can you make instructions". The truth is, its quite difficult to take a given design and easily translate it into money and thus discourages many builders from even attempting it. To properly sell instructions you currently need to: Have a design that others would like to build Have a CAD file made Have instructions created from the CAD Create a website with sufficient hosting ....and get people to visit it Create a backend payment system Password protect your content Facilitate the transaction and provide support if needed to the users I will be changing quite a few of the steps which I hope will completely change the perception of not just building custom models but also change the ease of collecting your dues for those creations. The idea behind MocPlans.com will be simple. Designers will have the ability to upload their latest creations along with the associated files. Users will have the ability to purchase, comment, rate and follow both the model and the designer if they so choose. This system will allow designers that don't have the expertise of having a website skip the multiple phases needed and jump right ahead to collecting off their creations (once instructions are created). In addition, if the designer doesn't have the knowledge of instruction building there are people on this forum that would be happy to create them (for a fee). I know that most people like me aren't opposed to paying for instructions on custom built MOC's and that designers aren't opposed to creating instructions if they can get thier money (TIME) back. With this system I think both parties will be happier and will ultimately result in a new ecosystem fostering not only the creations but the monetization of those creations. The biggest news relating to the launch of this site is that it will be featuring ALL 9 of RoscoPC's incredible F1 Cars (or HERE) There are full instructions, inventories and more available to the public with prices very similar to others you have seen. At launch MocPlans.com will also feature all of Crowkillers (Paul Boratko's) creations and those of Jurgen Krooshoop. If you are a designer and would like some of your models featured from the start feel free to email me at chase@mocplans.com Please understand that many aspects of this system will change as we see how the public reacts but the general hope is to streamline and consolidate the process of finding and building custom models. Also, since I know it will be mentioned, this is not intended to impede in any way on rebrickable and his site. Rather, I hope that the two can work together to help less knowledgeable builders source and build custom models. The sites will serve two purposes as his is meant to manage your collection of parts whereas Mocplans.com will have no provisions to manage your collection (other than your purchased models). Be sure to visit the splash at Mocplans.com and register for the updates at launch!!

For the Model or the Parts ?
nychase replied to Phantom59's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingAccording to a quick check on brickstore.... If you assign avg 6 month sales value to all the parts in the model and you achieved sales at avg values then the set is worth 375 dollars. Now thats even better if your name is Paul and you picked up a bunch of these sets for 140 bucks at Brickfair. Either way though sellers on BL scavange TRU and ebay for sales to source their parts. Often its not a worthwhile venture but in the case of the crawler there were so many unique parts the prices are sky high until lego starts selling the motors for the normal prices (i.e. under 10 bucks each). If maximizing value of the set is desired the very best thing you can do is buy a set and sit on it for a few years and then sell it either as a whole or parted out. Often lego will make a usefull part and then stop selling it for reasons no one understands. I myself? Its a mix. I buy plenty of sets to part-out but I also buy plenty of sets to have the sets. Then again, I buy plenty of humpty dumpty ebay sets that I use my parts to put back together again.

Crowkillers Lamborghini Gallardo/Murcielago in white?
nychase replied to Paul202's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingLets not forget about the 2 Double-Bent orange Liftarms as well. Perfect for those Rock Crawler conversion to all orange. Also in that set are the 1x4 thin liftarms and the pin connectors both in orange. Its quite the set for plundering parts...especially considering its otherwise dopey appearance. Got orange?
