[GBC] The Akiyuki Project (2010 - 2020)
nychase replied to Blakbird's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingDon't forget you're going to need a few more for the basketball shooter (and I don't know how you would sub those). Honestly though they aren't 6 euros, I just bought a few for around one USD. Remember that you can use the most worn-out ugly ones because you only want the shape, the condition of the chrome is irrelevant. Bad chrome versions are sold all the time at a steep discount. I will reserve judgement until I know for sure if the beads will work. I was able to find beads that don't have the hole drilled so they shouldn't get stuck like the others.

Alternative string for 8288?
nychase replied to Richard Dower's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingIts important you know that you don't actually need the 500cm string. Later on they changed what was included to two 200cm packs. If you look through the instructions I think the longest strand it asks you to cut is 190cm. I know I wrote a post about this years ago so from memory I might be slightly wrong, but I know that you can use 200cm packs instead of the expensive 500 (since it gets cut anyway). That being said, I stopped using lego string a while ago if the model wasn't for resale (i.e. had to be all lego). I just use waxed beading thread and moved on with life. Just go to a craft store and pick one that looks the closest to the official lego string.

[GBC] The Akiyuki Project (2010 - 2020)
nychase replied to Blakbird's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingNo....no I'm not, I'm a loner here in NYC...although probably joining a LUG in milwaukee when I move. Does anyone want to adopt me for now? I would be willing to buy 2000+ balls depending on the price. Also, is it the original soccer/basketballs or the newer blank designs? As I mentioned the newer designs pose an issue in that they don't really show the movement the balls go through (rotations specifically) as they run through the GBC's.

[GBC] The Akiyuki Project (2010 - 2020)
nychase replied to Blakbird's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI am not actually opposed to this though I wouldn't know how to find a vendor in china. I am certain that we could sell 20,000+ of them but I'm no expert on the legalities of reproducing a lego part (certainly megabloks knows a thing or two). Perhaps the answer is to create a ball of the same weight/size with no moldings (defining it as a soccer ball or basketball). It will be important to have the molded ball be multi colored (perhaps like a beach ball) because having the lines helps to show the movement and rotation of the balls and that is not something I would want to give up. It will also be important for the multi colored aspect to be molded and not painted since the paint will certainly wear off with active use. Thoughts?

[GBC] The Akiyuki Project (2010 - 2020)
nychase replied to Blakbird's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingMy tears just started.... Its about 1600USD for the models up to tilted rotors....and you can forget about the balls needed. To do us all a favor I have ordered 3 different types of 14mm "beads" from china. I hope to test them thoroughly to be able to recommend which can be ordered as a perfect proxy for the unattainable soccer/basketballs. The prices are of course a joke in comparison and I think it will help everyone build and enjoy these models. I do have an arsenal of the soccer/basketballs anyway so the test should be apples to apples.

42009 Extended Boom
nychase replied to afol1969's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingAre you using brickstock now? Brickstore hasn't been updated in years and sometime last year it stopped getting database updates so I started running into pretty basic part problems. Brickstock is someone else carrying the torch so to speak and it works well (its basically the same just with the updates). The part numbers I see through brickstock are 60c01 for the clutch and 6538c for the joiner.

nychase replied to touthomme's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingAwesome.... I love it when a plan comes together! Its so much easier when you can volunteer Eric's time.- [MOC] Galloping Horse
nychase replied to touthomme's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI volunteer to build it after blakbird is done making the instructions! Also, I asked about the sysiphus base as well....I am sure Blakbird would be willing to make the instructions for that as well!- Lego Technic 8858 Resurrection
I have done this many times....there are two other ingredients you need. 1) you need oxyclean to add to the hydrogen peroxide (just a small teaspoon full) to jump start the process. I used low % peroxide and never had a problem. 2) You need UV light. I suggest sunlight if available or I personally built a box lined with foil with two blacklights at the top. Took up to a week but worked wonders.- [MOC][WIP] Model Team 5571 With Trailer + Instructions
nychase replied to mnpumar's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI never built it....parts are sitting in a box. You mentioned winning an auction for some extra 5571 parts and the only auction in the US was for 200 that included the 5 wheels you mentioned. I just assumed it was this (you can find the real price it sold for by sorting the sold items list by price).- [MOC][WIP] Model Team 5571 With Trailer + Instructions
nychase replied to mnpumar's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThe only modifications I made were to remove the grey side skirts since those really aren't american (or weren't at the time I collected and now they are filled in usually), and I built the refridge unit out of metallic silver parts. 200 isn't a bad price for a 5571 carcass but if you really want to be jealous check out ebay.de. Those guys get 5571's for 50-100 complete.- [MOC][WIP] Model Team 5571 With Trailer + Instructions
nychase replied to mnpumar's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI also collected the parts for that trailer years ago but never built it (I had extra wheels) I would love to see the road train version!- Scania 143M Torpedo 6x4 Australian truck
nychase replied to 2LegoOrNot2Lego...'s post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingJust to update everyone. The issue has been resolved and Google has cleared the security flags that were showing up for everyone. Thank you all for your patience and enjoy Ingmars wonderful models!- Scania 143M Torpedo 6x4 Australian truck
nychase replied to 2LegoOrNot2Lego...'s post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingAs an update...The site is currently free of any issues but has to be reviewed by google before they release the flags that show up for everyone. Hopefully that will be resolved soon but I don't know exactly how long it will take.- My Set List
nychase replied to Richard Dower's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingYeah, The bug can bite and bite hard. I used to blame Blakbird for my troubles (because of techniopedia) but I have since settled with the fact that it was going to happen one day either way. I amassed a collection most here would be dumbfounded by....but have since sold quite a bit of it off to distill down to only the models I thought were worthy. I still have a massive collection of mocs and I think am the only one to have all of RoscoPC's F1 cars built (though Eric still has them!) At the end of the day you need to build custom models to truly appreciate what is possible with lego...although its not the best plan from an investment standpoint.- Scania 143M Torpedo 6x4 Australian truck
nychase replied to 2LegoOrNot2Lego...'s post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingWe are working on fixing this issue. Something happened on Friday and its not yet been resolved. It looked like it was an issue with the hosting company but it now appears as though there was a direct attack at the site. The site has been scrubbed once already and we are waiting for another scan by the hosting company to see what else needs to be done. Very sorry about the delay in getting access to the files.- Jennifer Clark's Demag AC-50 Crane
nychase replied to Blakbird's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingNot to be offensive but I was specific in saying motorized for a reason. That very boom and crane were mentioned just 3 posts ago and I wanted to highlight that this is fully motorized and actually very strong. Given the sag you can see in that design unloaded I can't imagine it can hold much of anything. Its important to note though that this never would have been possible in 2003 for Jennifer. Most of the parts I used were designed (or redesigned) in 2010 or later and without them it wouldn't have been possible.- Jennifer Clark's Demag AC-50 Crane
nychase replied to Blakbird's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingLet me tell you about a little project I called the Demag Mammoet Edition: Last year I was talking with Blakbird about possibly building the new "Grove" version of the 42009 crane and if it was worthwhile. While he said it was, it got me thinking that it was such a shame that the Demag didn't have a proper 3 section boom (lets ignore that "proper" would actually be 5 section). I took a good look at it but always remembered that Jennifer wrote it off on her initial build because it would of required a 6 stud wide construction which was out of scale. Well, after endless hours of design, testing, design and more testing (I think about 60 hours total), I have made the fabled but never seen in existence 4 stud wide, 3 section LONG motorized boom. Make no mistake, this thing is an absolute monster, the crane now stands 52" tall at full extension (132cm). It all works near perfectly as well (which was a requirement to be on the model in the first place). What was achieved is a boom nearly identical to the original being only one plate taller. The mount axis point, ram attachment point and the retracted length are the same as original. I actually removed one of the three fake 7 beam booms from the outer boom and moved it in proper spacing to becoming real for the middle boom, now it actually performs as it looks! Is it perfect?...no. I was unable to get a limitation on the extension other than it running out of track. It still sits perfectly when that happens and will retract properly so long as its anything but completely horizontal. I considered it a fair trade-off. Also, there is significant friction given so many parts rubbing against eachother but as long as the inner boom strings are properly routed the friction isn't enough to stall the motor. Certainly it doesn't have the same load capacity at max extension but it can still lift quite a bit more than you would ever expect. The Firgelli Actuator can still fully lift the boom at max extension from full horizontal which is incredible. The rest of the design is mostly color changes though I did add two boat weights to the back of the super structure. I would have loved to add more but I guess I wasn't in the mood for a full redesign of that too. I did actually create the ldraw for the 3 section boom in white too but I don't believe instructions have been made for it....you'll have to ask Jennifer and Eric if you want them made.- 8435 - Unique and Underrated?
nychase replied to Richard Dower's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingTo add: White Spoked Wheel, White Technic Steering Wheel (Both are exclusive to this set) I know both of these well since I needed the white wheels (as pulley's) for JC's Demag Crane (Which Eric promptly changed to the much more common LBG wheels)- What rare/unusual parts do you have?
nychase replied to Richard Dower's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI've got over 120 black 40tooth gears. and 300 red pistons I also have 40 of the wheels from the 8458/8461 because Luca always uses them for the rear wheels on his F1 cars. I'm sure loads of other stuff I can't remember at the moment. These photos are from 2 years ago so things have changed quite a bit since then. Oh yeah, 34 of the 5571/5563 wheels.- LEGO Technic related clothing and accessories
nychase replied to Paul B Technic's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingYES! Count me in. Also, wouldn't mind some of the shirts, though it would probably blow the anonymity of my lego love that I desperately clutch to with "normal" people.- Bloody ebay
I live in the US, I was not involved with YOUR transactions, I am involved in a general sense as both a large buyer and seller on ebay and bricklink. Condescension? I don't think as much was intended as you perceived. And yes, I most certainly did restate what others have said in a bullet pointed, easy to read list so that the next guy who is thinking that buying off ebay is a sure-thing can't say he wasn't warned.- Bloody ebay
I don't get it...you are complaining just to complain? I'm not one to flame up a conversation on here but you just seem to want to rant and I am very much active on both sides of the transaction you are on. 1) You are buying on ebay, it was said before but I need to point out...you are taking a risk. If you want to minimize your risk you are going to pay top dollar (FAIR MARKET VALUE) and that should assure you via pictures, competitive bidding and sellers feedback that you will be OK. Paying any less than bricklink avg price should alert you that the general public doesn't think that this set is as valuable as a guaranteed perfect set. You should trust public opinion in the form of competing bids. The exception to this is of course "buy it now" listings where the seller is just lazy and looking to make a quick buck not realizing their items are worth more if they just let it go to open auction. 2) No seller in this world cares if the parts are the correct "vintage". They don't even know what sort of rabbit hole you're expecting them to dig in. Missing parts is sometimes defensible depending on the part and the inventory method used (bricklink, peeron, physically building, or my favorite..."does it look complete"). 3) As a buyer, its your job to hawk the pictures and know what you are buying more than the seller knows what they are selling. Sure, the seller might screw up but you are saving yourself trouble if you buy carefully first. 4) If you want to avoid issues you will have better luck with bricklink. MOST sellers on bricklink are either collectors selling off some sets or more serious ones who view it as a business. In either case you will find bricklink sellers much more accommodating to errors and to knowing their product and the nuances of lego. Bottom line, educate yourself and choose your purchases wisely. And if your wondering, the first deal I purchased after my dark ages was the worst I ever did. I paid 500 dollars for a half 8880 and 8480 (was told they were complete) and some other items and figured I couldn't miss (based on my limited knowledge at the time). I have since bought and sold more than anyone could imagine (except maybe blakbird). You live, you learn.- [HELP] Is a 3-section beam even possible with this setup?
nychase replied to XAxles's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingA single technic beam (with or without the side tile reinforcement) isn't even remotely strong enough for any reasonable length third boom. It will be good for display only. - [MOC] Galloping Horse
