Vegas - horizontal spinner combat robot
As LEGO competitions go some countries have truck trial, some have races and UK has... Robot Combat. Without dwelling on the history of the serieses called "Robot Wars", "BattleBots" and spin-offs of those this is the prevailing (only?) activity coming close to a competition involving LEGO Technic in the UK. Seeing as I am competetive I decided to give it a go myself. After a year or so or experimenting I came up with a design that works reasonably well, even wining some fights: VEGAS - a horizontal spinner Using the wheel from the robot that beat me (designed originally by Nick Cowen) I choose to go with horizontal power, as I liked the idea of ripping wheels off the opponents. Vegas was built to "old rule set" of size being less than 32x32x32 stud and weight below 1kg, In the current ruleset (published on 28/12/2024) it sits comfortably in Tier 3 due to use of MouldKing motors and MouldKing 4.0 battery (some people have fitted a 6.0 battery, but MODS of Vegas are a story for another post, or at least a separate comment... we'll get to it). The most technical aspect of the weapon wheel is the friction clutch using 2x 8t gears, 24t gear and 2x friction pins: The clutch is advisable (I'd have said "necessary" but I have seen robots without it do very well since...) to reduce the stress of the buggy motor powering the weapon. This clutch is present twice in the wheel, allowing to gather sufficient kinetic energy for good hits while protecting the buggy motor. In the two years I run Vegas so far I did not experience a single issue with the weapon wheel, the motor or the gears in clutch skipping/being shattered etc. The name, colour choices for the robot and the wheel is a sum of two inspirations: Las Vegas (where BattleBots were relocated from NYC after 2nd season) and casinos (which is a derivative of Las vegas anyways...). Las Vegas, Casinos so the wheel is coloured to resemble a roulette wheel to the best of my ability in the functional context of a combat robot: Okay... the tooth is WeBrick, not LEGO because they refuse to release it in white (or did at the time of designing this bot) Next interesting feature is the self-righting mechanism. The green lid (imitating the roulette table) is suspended of a liftarm, which driven by a PF XL motor, geared down 3.2 times, allows Vegas to return to wheels down position, when the opponent tries to flip it. It has so much force/froction that I need to lift it via software fro any repairs below the lid... Drive of the wheels is nothing special. Bare standard for the competition - one PF L motor per wheel, here geared down 1.6 times in the well know portal hub part. That's all very well - but how does it work? I'll let some of the fights from this year speak for me (before Ill clear the editing/upload backlog of fights from October/November): Reading Brick Show 2024 June Jeopardy 2024 Due to popular demand I created instructions available on Rebrickable and a ready to run kit with help of LesDIY I do hope you will like it as well, and if you have seen it on a robot combat event - let me know what you thought of it!

[HELP] Generic Building Help Topic
TheQuoteMan replied to Jim's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingHi, Could anyone point me towards a steered driven solid axle with diff lock that fits Unimog 8110? I have searched the 8110 MODS and the Axle thread to no avail. I have converted rear axle to difflock with ease but I am realllllyyyy scratching my head with the front difflock.

Control+ General Discussion
TheQuoteMan replied to Jim's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingHas anyone tried to extract the code of the app for 42109 of 42099 to extract the coding used for the return to center solution? I am aware of the RacingBrick's coding solution, but I was wondering whether someone got to the original idea. I am trying and failing now, need to understand more about Android and how it saves installed apps.

[APP] BrickController2
TheQuoteMan replied to imurvai's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modelingimurvai I have just tested your app with GameSir G3S and it works great with BuWizz v2 as far as all the steering and functions go. One thing I cannot seem to figure out is how do I switch modes of BuWizz with your app? Have you or anyone here figured this out please

[WIP] Gravedigger - Monster Truck Chassis v1 RC with BuWizz
TheQuoteMan replied to TheQuoteMan's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingIt does for now, but it's far from perfect. This is the first rolling chassis that actually works for this MOC, I am sure it can be improved (e.g. have a proper suspension, not just almost hacked springs). Bracing servos and possible alternative steering connections will be looked into when I will be doing an improved version, when I will come up with the courage to tear it down massively or just build a next one, keeping this as point of reference.

[WIP] Gravedigger - Monster Truck Chassis v1 RC with BuWizz
TheQuoteMan replied to TheQuoteMan's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingHave not had issues with them so far ans I've been driving it for fun of asphalt since April. Same with the steering. I know its not super sturdy and would not stand an offroad drive, but was never intended offroad and its my first MOC, so I will do better next time and with further evolutions of the chassis. Actually the only flaw I has so far is sometimes the 3l pin with stopper in portal gears comes off, just in one wheel and I am not exactly sure why

[WIP] Gravedigger - Monster Truck Chassis v1 RC with BuWizz
TheQuoteMan replied to TheQuoteMan's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingAfter draining the BuWizz from full charge to no power the servos are moved up due to the crashes/flips about a 1/8th of a stud, its barely visible. For me that's good enough. Here are photos of how I braced

[WIP] Gravedigger - Monster Truck Chassis v1 RC with BuWizz
TheQuoteMan replied to TheQuoteMan's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThanks rathodsandeep, I am trying to get some control over driving on two wheels. I hope that with gamepad controls it will be a bit easier, as so far 50% of the two wheeled turns end up on side/roof :P The stickers arrived on Friday. Given that I may damage them slightly I've got two sets, to replace them when damaged. It looks much better with the stickers on, I think it is almost complete. The last thing to do is to add the visual details of fake V8 on top of the M motor in the rear

[WIP] Gravedigger - Monster Truck Chassis v1 RC with BuWizz
Fellow Technic Builders, Let me share my first serious and almost finished MOC - possible the most recognisable Monster Truck of all times, Gravedigger. Firstly, let's start with the picture of the real ting, in case you are not as obsessed with Monster Trucks/Gravedigger as I am: And here my version (now with stickers) The idea of recreating it with Technic was what drove me back to Lego after my dark ages. Firstly I wanted to just do a simple MOD of 42005 with body and colour swap, but then we've got the Claas tires which are a perfect fit for this project, so it got bigger and bigger. Anyway, here we are after two years of building: 2XL engines for power, geared up 3 times (one engine per axle) 2 servos for steering PF switch controlled by a M engine for switching from crab steering to opposite LEGO Lights Weight: 1281g Dimensions: 44 studs or 35cm long 15 studs or 12cm wide (chassis) 27 studs or 22cm wide (wheels) 32 studs or 26cm tall Performance wise is runs 3:1 geared up XL engines powered through BuWizz which combined with low centre of gravity allows for a fun stuff like less or more controlled driving on side two wheels: And to be seen in a video: Plus a video of the steering switch at work: The model is not very mechanically realistic, e.g. it has portal axles while the monster trucks use planetary geared axles, but it is my first MOC and it was meant to be fun in outdoor, not off-road play and it is. There is a mention of the chassis being v1 in the topic. I want to improve it and develop optimal Monster Truck chassis and have a set of bodies to replace on the top. As such, I am recreating the model in stud.io for my reference and possible instructions and the renders of the powertrain are available in links below (I don't want to overburden the post with pictures, anyone who will be interested in them will surely click a link). Build time so far: 2 years. This is my first MOC, I know it is far from perfect (e.g no torque allowing to climb a ramp and have enough speed to make a decent jump) but is fun for me so far and overall I am happy with the result. https://ibb.co/mVecNT https://ibb.co/ew12p8 https://ibb.co/f8rDwo https://ibb.co/dinWhT I have also ordered a set of custom stickers for the details and they are on the way. Can't wait to hear your opinions, guys as the stuff being published here humbles me with cleverness and complexity.

TheQuoteMan replied to jantjeuh's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingSorting a 50cm X 90 cm full of Technic takes me two weeks, so with your stuff it would probably take me years... I hate sorting but it's unenviable with the limited space I've got to build in

Technic Pub
TheQuoteMan replied to jantjeuh's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingLooks like like a 1920's Rolls Royce or sth else for a head of a state to be driven around and getting shot at in :D All jokes aside it looks impressive. Will it be suspended on leaf springs? I figure since I hope to start being active I may introduce myself. I am TQM, and I resurrected my LEGO addiction after dark ages around 2 years ago after the typical teen dark-age. I try to build almost exclusively in Technic and my current WIPs include: - Gravedigger, the monster truck (I finally got the chassis completed and I just need to get one PF switch to get the both axles to turn the way I want them to - TC13 entry Stubby Bob replica - Volvo 240 Estate - A rockcrawler with my V2XL engine with the new purple wheelarches and generally purple body Here's a pick of the engine It's nice to find a place in the internet where people share the love for Technic and create so many great things that are inspiration to me when I feel like I am going nowhere with my MOCs. So Happy New Year for all Technic heads may the 2018 bring great MOCs and all the sets/parts we all want to get our hands on.
