Atlantis 8061 Gateway of the Squid - alternate build
Squid parts were used on the tentacle. Besides, this is intended for display with the original set and I don't think you need two giant Squid

A decade in LEGO City-Town. Which set was the best?
Agreed. It would make this topic more interesting, too, since everyone votes for a Modular set For me, 2007 was overall the best year, with the great Recycle Truck, Cement Truck, City Harbour, Train Station (for the pricepoint, I thought this was a great little building and solidly designed), Gas Station... All the sets seemed well-designed and had bright but not overly repetitive colour schemes. They also were largely still good quality parts and used lots of new pieces in great colours (the big container panels, or the trans light blue pieces in the Gas Station). There was a nice spread of buildings, ships and vehicles and the models within each subtheme didn't feel samey (in comparison to 2008's Coast Guard, for example, where everything was blue, white, and orange, and it felt like they were filling a quota of x-amount of sets). 2008 was OK, although the Cargo theme had problems (the large green plane looked nice but was functionally useless) and this is where I noticed quality really dropping off. Coast Guard felt over simplified to me - not a phrase I toss about lightly! - and I think that the part palette became much more restrictive than in previous years. 2009 was most notable for the Farm sets and City Corner, but my favourite set of the year was the beautifully designed 4WD with Horse Trailer, which perfectly married the feel of old-skool Town while updating it to today's larger scale. Unfortunately 2009 saw the low-point of LEGO quality and saddens me that such a great design as the yellow bus in City Corner was built with some of the worst bricks I've ever seen So, 2007 is the overall winner for me

LEGO Licensed Themes MOC and Review Index Discussion Thread
Good point! They're not in the index An update of the Review/ MOCs index is overdue so I'll look for them then. In the meantime, try the search function using set #.

Interesting News Article
I find this quote interesting as it shows that (a) conflict is here to stay (b) something inevitably gets lost between product development and final release, no matter how many focus groups they do. I would say it hardly seems intuitive or logical that the Atlantis treasure pieces open a portal, considering this is nowhere on the box art and the big Atlantis portal set hasn't even been officially announced yet

MOC: Haunted Mansion
Wow! Incredible work! I love the overall shape and all the little details such as the sofas, fireplace and the grave with the skele rising from it. The gabled roof corners look fab as do using all those gate pieces for fencework I'd like to see a before version too with nice lawns and pearly gates, before this place went to hell in a handbasket

Harry Potter 2010 discussion thread
Calm down. The license was for films in the past, but we don't yet know if that's true of the 2010 sets. At this stage it looks more likely they will be based on the video game HP Years 1-4.

Yes... I imagine the new line will be more like the 07 Hogwarts set. All the printed detail on the figs, and stickers on everything else.

The Eternal Wanderer
Evocative work - I love the head and armour. If it is so delicate, maybe you should consider some way to strengthen it? There's nothing worse than a MOC that won't stand up! I am also unsure of the wheels. I like the concept of wheels, but I don't know if these ones look as good as they could. The scale is not quite right I think - there's something just a little odd about them. Great work!

Harry Potter 2010 discussion thread
I imagine these are familiar sounding because they are based on the video game HP Years 1-4 rather than the movie. Considering the line sort of failed at the end of 2005, it makes sense for LEGO to go back to basics with the most recognisable scenes than just doing one movie. (The 2007 one off set was an exception in the history of the theme.) I won't mind if the sets are sufficiently improved over the old ones.

Discussion: Why do you build Town?
Town will always be my first love I appreciate and enjoy everything from old Classic Town buildings to the very impressive modular series. There have been topics on this in the past, but I don't think the old open-back classic sets are at all incompatible with the new larger buildings. Some AFOLs don't like these because they think they're not really in scale, but have they looked at a real city lately? Even the largest modular building would still be dwarfed by its real-life counterpart. Like Hinckley, I appreciate older architectural styles, and like Ralph S, I really enjoy wandering around 'translating' in my mind beautiful old buildings into their LEGO counterparts - even if I never have time to build as much as I'd like. Colour is very important to me as a builder, so we've been amazingly lucky to get great parts in beautiful colours in recent years. I remember when I first started coming out of my dark ages in 2003-2004, the only sets where you could really get limited quantities of doors and windows were in Harry Potter. The 4886 Building Bonanza released at the end of 2004 was a real turning point in terms of LEGO aiming to please building afiocionados. It's great to see that designers are slipping new parts and colours into non-City sets (like the medium blue windows in Toy Story) and expanding this palette. The 5891 Apple Tree House is probably one of the most beautiful and well colour-coordinated sets I've seen in recent years, too. People have complained that it is too small but the size is just right for a medium sized house in comparison to the modular series (The 2009 6754 Family Home was just awkwardly scaled with those giant shutter windows as large as old style doors used to be). The idea of Town is really distilled as an idyllic neighbourhood - it's the place you want to live in your dreams...

Aussie sales! Share the news of LOCAL sales!
The downside of that would be that LEGO might decide not to distribute a spread of Exclusives to the major retailers like K-Mart and David Jones, so there would be no deep discounting as we've had during the July sales. We are kind of lucky in that regard.

That may be so, but I don't think it's any accident that both their Exclusives from 2008 (Ahsoka's Starfighter at $80 and Endor at $200) were significantly above what the RRP of comparable sets would normally be. This means that the price was effectively driven up, especially for those of us nowhere near a Toyworld who had to buy them from S@H anyway. My advice? Wait for starwarshop.com to have another one of their 25% off sales

Star Wars sets anyone?
Sorry, but no! It's just as expensive across all non-US markets. In Aus it's $AUD59.99, so even more expensive at GBP33. Anyway, LEGO only ever makes pricing corrections in one direction - UP! They never mark things down In Australia, for example, this week they bumped up the price of the Tantive IV another $20 to $AUD299.99, making it only GBP166! (Just a little higher than your retail price of GBP99.99).

I'm turning into one of those AFOLs who will probably just buy the figs I want from bricklink and ignore the set! But to be honest, I'd rather spend $20 and get the one fig I want than spend $50 or $60 and further encourage LEGO. Every sale counts! The weirdest thing I find is the massive disconnect between LEGO's retail prices and what actual customers in shops seem willing to pay
