[MOC] Red Beryl GT
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingEven though it did not receive best technic, it was nonetheless very well received by both attendees and visitors alike. Thank you!! Yeah, unfortunately Technic is a very obscure theme in the world of Lego. I don't think I saw any Technic supercars besides mine. Thanks!!

[REVIEW] 42081 - Volvo Concept Wheel Loader ZEUX
You'd still have to get another large cylinder and valve. The Volvo has 3 LA functions so you would need 3 cylinders + 3 valves to carry out the task. The 42080 only has two of each.

[WIP] Grapple Truck I6
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingUPDATE 7/27/18 The last couple days I started work on the chassis of this model. I attached the crane to a reinforced 4-function distribution gearbox that will allow for four different motorized functions. I've also redesigned the crane itself, making it white instead of red and added an operator's seat to it. Note that I removed the grabber - I will be replacing it with a 42006/42042-style claw that should make it good for picking up rocks, etc. I have also routed a drive axle through the chassis that will connect the rear axle to a piston engine. At this point the functions I am considering are: Motorized: Boom elevation 2nd part of boom Turntable Dumping (with linear actuator) Manual: Extension Claw Outriggers I am considering a model of a heavy-duty pickup truck (e.g. Ford F700) with a dark azure body and two axles, the rear one featuring double wheels. A dump will sit behind the crane which will be modeled in black. If you guys have any suggestions for me, please let me know. Photos:

[WIP] CLAAS Challenger 95E
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThat was literally what I just used that I realized weren't accurate enough. Look at my first update. EDIT: I'm just gonna keep the sprockets plain. Those large round wheels on the real thing are incredibly difficult to replicate accurately. I'll further explain in the next update.

[WIP] Grapple Truck I6
Hey guys, here's another post-BrickFair MOC I have planned that has an interesting backstory: While working on the CLAAS Challenger 95E I decided to make a crane attachment for it like the 42054. Of course, I wanted to make it much better as the 42054's crane didn't seem too appealing to me. Unfortunately, the crane ended up being way too big because I wasn't paying attention to the scale I was building at. I even put a directional gearbox beneath it to control two crane functions. The end result was something very similar to the 42054's crane attachment but ended up way out of proportion to the tractor itself, and I unfortunately had to scratch that idea. But something about this crane stands out to me so much (despite it being essentially another 9397) that I hated to get rid of it, which ultimately led me to propose another MOC. A grapple truck was something I've wanted to make since my early days of MOCs - I've made one back in 2014 but this one will, of course, be much more streamlined and realistic. I don't plan on giving it remote control (as I don't want to deal with wire organizing) but instead a single motor (either M motor or L motor) to drive a distribution gearbox that will control various functions. This would also be a good opportunity for me to use dark azure pieces, as I plan on making the cab that color. As of right now, I have the crane arm completed, but here's my tentative list of features: Single PF M or L motor, driving a distribution gearbox that would control: Outriggers (using Arocs gear racks/brackets) Turntable Boom elevation 2nd part of boom (whatever that part controlled by the small LA is called) Other manual functions would include: Extension Grabber (I'll probably replace it with something better - perhaps 42006's claw?) Basic features/functions would be: 2 rear axles connected to straight-4 piston engine underneath the cabin (double rear wheels, of course) HoG steering Tilting cabin (to reveal engine) Like the other MOC I recently started, I'll probably wait until after BrickFair to really work on it when I'll have all my pieces available after I take apart my BrickFair MOCs. If you guys have any suggestions for me, let me know in the comments. Anyways, here's some pics of that crane:

[WIP] CLAAS Challenger 95E
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingUPDATE 7/21/18 Hey guys, after struggling to get enough of the necessary parts to make this model I'm holding it off until after BrickFair. If I were to do it for BrickFair I would have to end up compromising so many features that the finished model would be nowhere as good as the other two MOCs I'm bringing to the expo. In the meantime I've taken apart the original chassis save the individual tracks, and I plan on including the following in the final version: Drive using 2 L motors instead of M motors, placed side by side instead of "at the ends". This would save space for a proper rear attachment and PTO. Straight-6 piston engine, driven by a separate motor also connected to the rear PTO (similar to original setup) Motorized raising/lowering of the rear attachment Full SBrick control (the piston engine/PTO motor would be turned on/off by a button instead of a lever in the SBrick app) Powered by the 8878 rechargeable battery (smaller and weighs less than the AA battery box) As of right now I have the individual track pieces ready for the final version. Between them would probably sit a 5x7 frame and some beams to reinforce them. I'm still trying to decide what circular piece to use near the sprockets - the original's are pretty large but I can't seem to find the right piece to represent it. If you guys have any suggestions for me, please let me know. Photos:

[MOC] Red Beryl GT
I have built two Lego Technic supercars in the past - both of which were motorized and featured SBrick control. Since both proved to have an interesting building process, I decided to make my second MOC to this year's BrickFair Virginia a mid-engine supercar. The building process involved lots of Trial-and-error, the most apparent being completely redesigning the chassis from scratch and streamlining the chassis in its early stages. I've also changed up the interior many times, especially the seats, dash, and underside panels. The car is driven by 2 PF L motors located very close to the rear axle - giving it a very efficient drivetrain. The drive motors are also connected to a V8 piston engine which can be accessed by opening the rear hatch. Steering is done by a PF servo motor, and I decided to use the newer steering hubs in the front. The car also features full independent suspension, with 1 shock absorber per wheel in the front and 2 per wheel in the rear. The power source is the 8878 rechargeable battery, located conveniently behind the rear axle. As for the aesthetics, this model contains plenty of angled connections - most of which are done by angled connectors. This was especially true for the front end, where plenty of angled connections were used to get the smooth, rounded shape of a supercar. I also used plenty of flex axles in the bodywork, especially for the wheel arches and windshield. The roof used 3x13 curved panels to get a more rounded shape, and since they are currently not available in red I went with black which resulted in a two-tone body I'm very happy with. The only part I'm not so happy about is the rear hatch, since the black panels seem to be just placed on there randomly. I also felt like the interior could have used a bit more detail. but overall I'm happy with how the model turned out aesthetically. This MOC was a MOC full of trial-and-error but ultimately turned out to be something I'm really happy with. Comparing it to my earliest MOCs (and even my previous supercars), I see that I have come a long ways over the past 5 years. Looking at the results, this model seems to resemble most closely an Acura NSX even though I didn't really have a "goal" car in mind as I built it. Although this was a MOC primarily concerned with aesthetics, it isn't so lacking in functionality either as it is not only motorized but also features the opening rear hatch which I never planned to include in the beginning. Overall it was a great MOC and building experience and I'm excited to display it at BrickFair Virginia this year. Video: Photos:

[WIP] CLAAS Challenger 95E
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThat's a cool version of the Unimog! Never seen it before! Do you mean the standard Lego sprocket is not big enough for a properly sized drive wheel? That was the main reason I chose the 95E instead of the 55 - if Lego made a bigger sprocket wheel I would've done the Challenger 55 instead. I like your use of a rim in place of the rear sprocket - the lack of a larger sprocket was something that forced me to do the 95E instead of the 55. However something just feels wrong about the current chassis to me - I'm holding this project off until after brickfair and will probably rebuild the chassis from scratch with L motors and a better rear PTO.

[WIP] CLAAS Challenger 95E
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingHaha I'm gonna wait till after brickfair and have more parts available to build with (I currently have two finished MOCs taking up a big chunk of my available pieces). By then not only will I be able to incorporate a proper straight-6 (not to mention the current engine looks straight up ugly) I'll also be able to make a better reinforced chassis with L motors and include SBrick for better control. BTW, I'm curious to see your unimog!

[WIP] CLAAS Challenger 95E
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingCurrently I only have those 4 slotted engine blocks with me right now, a lot of my parts are currently in Iowa. Seeing that this model will likely place a strain on my already limited range of parts and that a lot of compromises (such as the engine) would have to be made, I'm thinking about delaying this MOC until after brickfair.

[WIP] CLAAS Challenger 95E
Hey guys, here's a third model I'm making for BrickFair Virginia this year. I know the event's just weeks away but since I found myself way ahead of schedule I thought why not make a third MOC. It is, of course, going to be much simpler than my other BrickFair MOCs, but I have a feeling this build's gonna be interesting: UPDATE: I'm not bringing this MOC to BrickFair as it is likely going to place a strain on my already limited amount of necessary parts. There's no way I'll get this done in 10 days without making a ton of compromises, so I'm waiting until after BrickFair so I can make it better. I already have a good amount of this MOC done at this point - the entire chassis is pretty much together. The functions will include: Tank drive with a single Medium motor per track, geared down 3:1 Straight-4 piston engine Rear power take-off manually raised/lowered rear attachment The entire model only contains 3 motors, 2 driving the model with the third one driving the rear PTO as well as the fake engine. Note that the battery box and IR receiver are probably not in their final locations yet - I just attached them to the chassis at seemingly reasonable points to avoid a mess of wires while working on the model. I also realize the rear attachment is way too long so I'll definitely look at that part a second time. I'll also make at least one attachment for this tractor - either a mower or a crane like the 42054. If you guys have any suggestions for me, please let me know. Photos:

[WIP] Red Beryl GT
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingUPDATE 7/3/18 The Red Beryl GT has been completed after slightly over a month's work. I expected the build to take much longer, but it's finished, so yay! A total of 4 Bricklink orders were made in the process, although some were pretty small. I'll try to get photos and videos uploaded this week, as well as get it registered for BrickFair. This MOC finished way earlier than I expected, so I'm now a month ahead of schedule for BrickFair. I might try to squeeze in another MOC for BrickFair before the end of the month.
