[WIP] Red Beryl GT
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThank you The hood is already a compromise. I tried like a bunch of other solutions that didn't work so well, so i settled with this. I tried putting beams between the panels, but I didn't like the result as much, so I stuck with this more open design.

ideas on 3 axle functions going though turntable?
JLiu15 replied to Alasdair Ryan's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingWith the new rotary changeover catches from the Bugatti this could potentially become a lot easier: get one of the axles to drive a single rotary catch with several driving rings placed around it. This way when it turns the driving rings will be shifted at different intervals, allowing for many functions to just come off of that single catch. You could easily add another one of those modules if you want more functions. Compared to the lever-type changeover catches, this should take up a lot less space. Note: I do not have the new rotary catch so I'm not sure about the exact properties of it, but I do think it will make your solution a lot easier to incorporate.

JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThanks! Lol, I've been thinking of those exact cars this entire time! It reminded me of a Fiero before this update (when the windshield was steeper), but now with the roof moved back a stud, kinda starting to see the NSX. After all, this MOC is technically a blend of several existing supercars :)

ideas on 3 axle functions going though turntable?
JLiu15 replied to Alasdair Ryan's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingNot sure if this is practical, but here's what I'm thinking of: do the standard two functions through a turntable (central axle + driving ring/gears or old diff), but then use the turntable itself as a function provider (for example, drive the turntable from the bottom and use the turntable's rotation for the third function). As for the actual turntable then, use the ring pieces from the 42055 and reinforce it a bit. The upcoming 42082 Rough Terrain Crane seems to use the ring gears as part of its turntable, so maybe this could potentially work for large-scale models like the 42082? In other words, the turntable becomes the third of the concentric axles, through a larger turntable made of ring gears from the 42055.

JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingUPDATE 6/29/18 At this point the car is about 80 percent complete. The only part I have left to build is the engine cover, which will be a separate module that will later be attached to the vehicle. It will be openable but won't be motorized, as there wasn't much space for an opening mechanism. Since the previous update, I've added more body panels and got some of the rear done. Since @Lipko asked I've moved the roof back a stud, and imo it already looks a lot better than before. However, to @IA creations and @BrickbyBrickTechnic I don't see how the car is too long. Sure, it's not short but it isn't absurdly long either. I've found some real supercars that seem to match its proportions (e.g. Porsche Carrera GT). Also, this MOC isn't gonna be named "V8 Supercar" in the end. It just sounds super lame for an interesting build. I'm deciding on something like "Red Beryl GT" Once again, if you guys have any suggestions, please let me know. Photos:

JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThank you! I had to compromise on the hood. I tested several designs but either attached poorly or required me to drastically modify the surrounding areas. This was the optimal solution I came up with - not entirely happy with it but good enough without compromising time and pieces for the rest of the build.- [WIP] Red Beryl GT
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThank you! I'm glad you like it! As for the size, looking at a similar supercar - Porsche Carrera GT, it doesn't seem too absurdly long, but thanks for pointing it out! Never thought of it.- [WIP] Red Beryl GT
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingContinuing off the last update, I've got the doors and roof all finished: As for the doors - they're pretty basic, but they turned out pretty well in my opinion. They are secured by a pivot point as well as a linkage, which ensures there's enough friction to keep them from opening randomly. As for the roof - I used four 3x13 curved panels to get that particular shape. Seeing this as the solution LEGO used in recent supercar sets, I decided to try it and it works great. One particularly challenging part was the windshield: I needed to make sure it's held at a realistic enough angle while not compromising the ability for a flex axle to fit at the base of it. It took me at least 10 attempts to determine the best way to connect them and making sure none of the pieces are stressed or attached too loosely. At this point you can kinda start to see the car itself take shape. The front 2/3 of it is essentially done. Some body panels and a rear bumper later and it's time for the rear hatch, which I plan to make remotely openable. If you guys have any suggestions for me, please let me know. JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingUPDATE 6/25/18 Considerable progress the last few days! The arrival of all my Bricklink orders allowed me to really get to work; I've finished the interior and added some details near the engine. As for the dash, I've completely redesigned it after removing it a few updates ago, and now it's much more incorporated into the chassis rather than sitting there all by itself. Unfortunately the steering wheel is still just for looks. The black 5x7 frames really allowed for a robust connection right there between the chassis and bottom panels, which I'm really happy with. The seats are kinda similar to those on the Porsche set - even though I decided to do them in dark gray this time. Note the structure between the seats - that will be the main attachment point for the roof. As for the engine, I've added details such as tubes, bottle-like objects and some cylindrical ones. I'm not an expert on car engines so I just put whatever I felt like looked good in there, and I'm pretty happy with the result. Throughout the build the engine just looked bland, and this really improved the looks of it. At this point I'm considering an opening engine cover, something like on the 10248 or 42077, but it will be opened remotely via motors. If so then the build will become a modular one: I will build the engine cover itself when the body stuff (doors, roof, rear bumper) are in, but this is just an idea. In the next few updates I'll aim to finish the rest of the body stuff - doors and roof first. As per usual, if you guys have any suggestions for me, please let me know. And now the photos!- [WIP] Red Beryl GT
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThanks! Not really, I just look at supercars in general (both real and Lego Technic, for example 8070, 42056, 42083) and see how shaping is usually done, and go from there. Thanks!! When I add those 19L red flex axles marking the wheel arches it should start to look a bit more "filled". Still waiting for them to arrive... I agree, the front bumper really turned out well. I will, however, on that part where a grille-sorta thing will go in I will replace the 180 degree red connectors with smooth ones, like those used beneath 42056's driving rings. The 180 degree red connectors are merely placeholders right now as I wait for more parts to arrive. I'm not sure about using the 3x11 pannel to replace the 11L beam and 2L tubes - it might end up looking kinda awkward with a combination of well-filled areas and not-so-filled parts, if you know what I mean. I've intentionally left it with some gaps to keep it loose - sorta like how the 8070 did it.- [WIP] Red Beryl GT
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThanks! The hood is done. What I'm missing are the flex axles but those aren't really for the hood - they're for the wheel arches but they'll definitely help make the space underneath it look less square.- [WIP] Red Beryl GT
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingUPDATE 6/23/18 Made some good progress - on the hood. Overall it's pretty skeletal to keep things loose but there's a couple panels to add detail. The rest of my Bricklink orders should be coming in the next few days, and I should be able to complete the new interior (seats/dash) and the roof. If you guys have any suggestions for me, please let me know. Photos:- [WIP] Red Beryl GT
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThere hasn't been much progress on this MOC lately, but I've made a series of Bricklink orders that will contain a lot of the parts I need for completion of this MOC. Among the orders I've made are black 5x7 frames (to support the area below the dash), black 3x11 curved panels (to model the roof), red flex axles, and various beams and connectors to replace aging ones that are becoming dirty or cracked. But as for what I did do for this MOC since the last update, I've reworked the bottom paneling to four 3x11 panels as opposed to just two. I've also finished the hood for the most part, although I've yet to attach it. Photos:- 42081 - Volvo Autonomous Loader

JLiu15 replied to Sariel's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI know not everyone will agree with me and it's purely my opinion, but I do not like this system. First of all, from what I see the battery box can only connect two motors. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this would be a serious disadvantage for people wanting to make bigger models with more motors. Also it looks like the system is completely geared towards trains - all the parts are the studs type and it doesn't look as easy to incorporate into models as PF. I'd much rather they expand the PF system like they did back in 2012 with the L and Servo motors. I'd really hope for something like a PF-revived RC Buggy motor. Overall, I really hope this system expands to include more elements in the future - I hope they at least makes their own version of every type of PF element currently available (and more compatible with Technic, of course) and that they come up with a way to make it usable with PF. Maybe they'll make their way into the Technic line someday - but I think such a change would definitely need to happen before this.- 42081 - Volvo Autonomous Loader
JLiu15 replied to dimaks13's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingOh, if that's the case I guess I'd be building the B- model instead :)- [WIP] Red Beryl GT
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThanks- 42081 - Volvo Autonomous Loader
JLiu15 replied to dimaks13's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingNah, I like it having Claas tires...with the 4 from the Claas itself it's time I can make a 8x8 out of them! I actually don't really care about the playability tbh, I often keep a set together for only about a week then I take them apart for pieces. But from your description it seems more functional than I anticipated. Thanks! But among the 5 new Technic sets of the summer this seems to be the best priced set that isn't way too expensive for me. Also, the 42080 has less pieces and is more expensive, yes it has pneumatics but with what you said about 42053...so relative to that set this one is better in terms of price per piece.- 42081 - Volvo Autonomous Loader
JLiu15 replied to dimaks13's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingHey guys, so after looking at this set a bit I'm thinking about getting it after it comes out. It seems to be the "just right" option for me among the 5 Technic sets for the second half of 2018: the 42079 and 42080 seem overpriced and don't have that many features I find interesting and the 42082 and 42083 are obviously really expensive. So, considering that I can get another set of Claas tires, the Volvo bucket, and yellow rims out of this set it seems to be a really good parts donor for me. I'm not sure if anyone knows at this point, but if any of you do can you sum up the functions of this set? From the looks of it it seems really lacking in functions - it obviously has no PF and I doubt that it will have a gearbox (due to the many control knobs sticking out from the vehicle). Some parts of it also seem weird to to me - like that box back there. It doesn't seem to do anything more than just serve as a counterweight. I'm wondering if this is gonna be like 42064 all over again - impressive looking model as a whole but really lacking in functions this reducing the playability. Of course, I'm gonna have to look at reviews of the set after it comes out to make my decision whether this set is worth buying or not, but for now this seems to have the most of what I need out of the 2018 2H sets.- [WIP] Red Beryl GT
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThanks The angles things are placed at is crazy in there - various pieces are held on by like a single axle connector piece. It doesn't seem to affect things too much, though.- [WIP] Red Beryl GT
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThanks! Stay tuned for more progress coming in the following weeks!- [WIP] Red Beryl GT
JLiu15 replied to JLiu15's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingUPDATE 6/14/18 Moving onto the bodywork! I’ve finished the front bumper section of the car, with a lot of building at angles and curved elements, including flex axles (those white ones outlining the wheel arches will eventually be replaced by red ones) and even System pieces. Unfortunately, I’ve taken apart the seats and the dash as I want them to be built accordingly to the bodywork, rather than have the body built around them. I’m also gonna have to make sure the new dash is in proportion to the doors. Because I don’t like that empty space below the dash, I’ll probably put two black 5x7 frames in there (that I will order on Bricklink as part of a large set of orders that will contain red flex axles, red panels, etc.) that will also help reinforce the dash and the model as a whole. I’ve also realized the seats have to be made bigger. Photos: - [WIP] Red Beryl GT
