@LvdH ‘s image probably represents a true perspective of the front overhang vs the TLG sliding image. Plan is to retain existing guards and most of the bonnet, it’s just getting that front curvature right plus that headlight shape. It doesn’t help there is bigger cartoon wheels to deal with, the actual P1 has 19” front (245/35 R19) and 20” (315/30 R20) rear rims (tyres). Would have been too difficult for TLG to implement, just didn’t need to be the Ferrari Daytona size.

The McLaren P1 arrived fairly quickly from TLG last week with the accompanying GWP, which I have zero interest in. Naturally I’m a McLaren fan boy being from New Zealand - home of Bruce McLaren Cars & Motorsport. Grew up with stories of Bruce McLaren’s involvement in motorsport as a Constructor and racing in F1 (winning the 1962 Monaco GP), the Can-Am series and LeMans 24 Hours (winning 1966 race with fellow Kiwi Chris Amon). A few MOC Lego Technic McLaren Cars, have been built over the years, Bruno’s original McLaren P1 and two of Charbel’s McLaren 720S’. Having brought the last four Lego 1:8 scale cars, had to add P1 to the set. Spent the best part of yesterday building the P1 with a few modifications along the way. The complete car is solid and robust - no issues picking this one up. The seats have been infilled with an extra 11.5 Bent Liftarm through the centre. One thing that was noticeable with Blue 3L Pins, colour bled through the Bright-Light Orange Liftarm, ended up substituting with Tan 3 L Pins. There is not a Lime Pin in sight! - all replaced with LBG and Black. Curved Slopes fitted to the back of the clamshell to cover the exposed Liftarm Frame. Bruno’s McLaren P1 alongside its Lego counterpart. I had constructed another P1 front end, prior the sets arrival to work through cleaning up size of lower grille area (too big) and of course headlights. Built the shape of the P1’s headlight in wire form using scaled drawings, trying to best replicate the shape is the Lego P1. I have brought a few 47L lengths of 3mm Rigid Hose in White, plan is to use these rather than using Soft Axles, to provide tighter curves.

Yeah, fully understand the irony of that, but we are not generally throwing Lego in the bin. I still have bits from 45 years ago, probably like many others or bins of Lego that has been passed through multiple families over years.

The McLaren P1 arrived yesterday, it is disappointing that these flagship sets are arriving containing the crazy amount of plastic bags. Information on the outer LEGO box - Country of Origin:- CN (China) 14/5/24. Hopefully with next 1:8 car TLG will celebrate the 10th Anniversary with all paper bags! Let the fun begin….

@Scapuc The LaFerrari went through a couple of changes since that photograph, I don’t have the LaFerrari here anymore - it’s 500kms away at my parent’s place. I’ll need to have a look at some older working photographs from 12 months ago over the weekend and refresh my memory. Mostly Angled Connectors, Short Pins, 1/2 Pins and 3L Bars……

The Mercedes G-500 G-Wagen is the first Lego Technic set I have brought to build since the Ferrari Daytona SP3. The selection of new parts, Reddish Orange, functions piqued my interest and I have the Land Rover Defender in “Pimped” form. Also the first set since the Claas Xerion 5000 Tractor that I have used the instruction booklet, I usually use the digital version on an iPad - due to having it before the 1st August the digital instructions weren’t available. Enjoyable build, a few interesting techniques, live axle has plenty of articulation, just found the Mercedes sat better with all four front Shock Absorbers having the Hard Spring - not sagging, sitting higher in its travel. Built Mercedes with a few minor changes, substituted a few DBG parts for Black, Black 3L Pins in areas, colour matched roof box handles, etc. Did a small headlight mod to include White Halos around the headlight with a Trans-Clear Wheelchair Wheel as the lens. Added a flare to front guards and larger rear mud flaps - still a work in progress. The Mercedes will get disassembled shorty as my daughter wants to build it too. After that we’ll have a crack at a few more modifications, I’m not a fan of the exposed Liftarm wheel arches. Hopefully the McLaren P1 will arrive from Australia next week, so will be the next project.

Yeah, I originally substituted the Soft Shock Absorber with a Black body - didn’t want the Light Bluish Grey body. But as it turns out the G-Wagen got a bit saggy in the front end after a couple of days, so now it has two Hard Shock Absorbers.

Mercedes Benz G-500 set arrived today, interestingly received the standard box design and 20 odd plastic bags instead of the new paper packaging. Didn’t intend purchasing until discounted later in the year, but was available online with 20% off the NZD$449.99 retail price already!

The “MSO P1” is getting few more facelifts here and there. Playing around with ideas - nothing set in concrete, extended the mid rear bumper section, Fence System parts have been fitted and changed lower taillights. Thumb wheel is back to it’s original position, as the Small Panels have also moved outward too. I have replaced to original 12L Red Soft Axles with 11L versions to have a more robust connection at the 3L Connectors above the exhaust outlet with an Axle/Pin, rather than relying on the Soft Axles for the connection through the Liftarms. Also replaced the odd in your face Blue Axle/Pin in the Red #4 Connector with a Red Pin and Bar. MSO - McLaren Special Operations

Pretty impressed with the overall shape of P1 considering the “shrink-wrapped” curvature of the original car. There are a good selection of new parts, a few short comings with shape mainly forward of the front axle, headlights and square front end - we can work through that. One of my biggest gripes is the recolour or lack of simple recolouring of some small parts. TLG recoloured a few parts like 11 x 15 Liftarm Frame for the rear clamshell, but they left the mashup of Bright Light Orange and Light Bluish Grey on the clamshell under the rear wing (upside down 3 x 5 x 3 Curved Panels and 2L Axle Connectors). There is also the likes of the rear wing and top of the bonnet with random Black Connectors, where they should have had Bright Light Orange. It was awesome to see all the prototype Lego McLaren P1’s with the development parts/designs and the stand alone sections like doors, gearboxes, etc. at the McLaren Technology Centre. Always good to see the evolving design process to the final product, as @Tlego exhibited a while ago with his build process for the LaFerrari and @Divitis is doing with his current Ferrari 125S. As my old maths teacher always said “I want to see all the workings, not just the answer”. These should also allow the use of other wheel sizes too, not just the big 75 x41mm rims. I was surprised at the size of the gearbox, as @allanp made reference to, why do the gearboxes need to be so complex and big in size - ideally the V8 engine should sit a lot lower down in the car. Over on Rebrickable, Anto’s Ultimate 6+N+R gearbox is an example of slim compact design and smooth mechanical operation. There was a comment on The Brothers Brick about the removal of the clamshell - “If you want to access the engine bay, you will have to take the rear wing off before removing the clamshell. It’s quite easy to do, if a bit of a rudimentary solution”, yes - just like the real P1 - but not so easy to do at least the authenticity is represented here. I’ve just built up rear end of the P1 to sort out some ideas for a more realistic exhaust system in the “Y” configuration for the P1, not in love with the 18 System parts and right angle bends in the current exhaust solution. I had a few parts leftover from a change of plans in recent build - like Dragon Tail/Horn Section and Connectors in Pearl Gold. Thought these would mimic the shape of the P1’s exhaust system a little better - a work in progress still. One thing lead to another and a fair portion of the P1 rear end has been built with the odd random place holders, like the exhaust outlet colour for example, a couple bits of Lime and Azure. Also cleaning up random Lego vomit as I work through the build, particularly the Red 3L Pins and 2L Axles. I had previously built up the rear wing in Black, intend to stay with the Black colour-way to free up some valuable Light Bright Orange parts for use elsewhere. The mechanism for raising and lowering the wing is smooth in operation, it can be moved by simply running your finger underneath the knob, no need to use as a thumb-wheel, so recessed it inward one stud - wanted to retain it, instead of removing. There will plenty of scope for mechanical modifications, but the limiting factor with body mods will be availability of Bright Light Orange parts, particularly various Connectors. It’s going to be tough for the Lego 42172 McLaren P1 to compete with all the comparisons against Brunojj’s original P1 version, especially with all his incorporated functions - adjustable ride height, adjustable spoiler height (which the 42172 looks to have), steering activated ‘Air-Brake’, door mechanism, etc. Brunojj’s P1 was released six years ago and has been built by many of us, including myself and it is all over AliExpress in various forms. Granted the Lego version will has had the advantage of a bigger parts toolbox, ie. Panels, Rims/Tyres, Yamaha Gearbox parts. The 42172 will also have a bigger audience who won’t even have the Brunojj’s P1 on their radar or care about our list is functions. I was surprised with the reveal of the older P1, initially thinking it would be the yet to be released codename P18 ‘BLOODL1NE’ car - to celebrate the 10 Year anniversary of the P1. McLaren will so protective of this project, they wouldn’t have wanted any Lego leaks stealing their thunder like what happened with the Lego 42110 Land Rover Defender. We have seen this before with the Lego 42141 McLaren F1, older model appearing over the closely guarded secret of the new seasons F1 car. I was hoping there might be some new Lego suspension parts as the ’P18’ has had a bit of publicity about its 3D printed suspension arms, thought Lego may produce a genetic part to help integrate the bigger Shock Absorbers into these larger scale vehicles. Also my thoughts were the colour would be Reddish Orange (Mercedes G-Wagen) with all the use of this colour in the ‘Space Sets’, as this closely resembles McLaren’s Volcano Orange - the colour was always going to be close to McLaren’s historic Papaya Orange colour-way. The leaked image of the rear end, the Red Soft Axles (taillights) stand out better against Bright Light Orange, than probably what the would have done against Reddish Orange - would have been somewhat lost, as LoxLego’s image shows above. From the initial leaked images I’m somewhat disappointed with the Lego 42172 solution for the rear wing, thought it would be more sculptural and what’s with the accountants keeping the two lonely Black Connector with 90° Axles? I’ll probably end up putting a Black wing in place for a little contrast - couldn’t help myself assembling it on appearance on the leaked images and with the help of some Bricklink parts that had just arrived earlier in the day for another project - damn that addiction. Hopefully there is some sort of wing integration with steering, as Langko’s Pagani Huayra BC built recently - it has very good integrated system with actuating front and rear flaps. The jury is still out on the rest of the P1 until the official images are out there. Almost looks as if there is two of the smaller Tapered Panels to the centre of the bonnet. The rims look way better than the Daytona SP3 rims. I think there will be a revival of all those rear exhaust options from a past Eurobricks thread too and those Engine Scoop prices will might ramp up again, quicker than inflation. As always there will be plenty of scope for modifications, plus the other variants P1 GTR, P1 LM, MSO and there is Lanzante’s selection too - HDK (High Down Force Kit) and Spider. Also the Goodwood Festival of Speed this coming weekend will feature Lanzante x O’Gara Coach x Mad Mike’s (Mike Whiddet) crazy rotary powered McLaren P1 GTR ‘MADMAC’ drift-car, that they have been building and testing in New Zealand. I’ll add Lego McLaren P1 to the Lego Technic car garage for sure and add modifications, it is always better when there is a Kiwi on it! And we got our flag the Lego Emirates Team New Zealand AC75 Yacht too, but this needs to be mod’d into Emirates Team New Zealand’s 202.9km/h Record Breaking Land Yacht named Hononuku. The price of the set will probably be around the current Ferrari Daytona @ NZD$749.00, I guess it’s just a cost of living - fuelling the mind. 😃

I finally got the BMW M4 GT3 complete, with a few of my own modifications and ‘Lime’ work-arounds. I’m pleased with the final result using genuine Lego parts (except rims) and the nice sweeping lines off the front wheel arches over the roof, down to the rear wing. Ended up running with the Lime coloured roof, replacing my original Black roof. An aerial was also added to the centre of the roof and the wing mirrors are mounted off the doors. I went with a single right-hand mounted exhaust and muffler, on the left-hand bulkhead there are two fluid containers. Made a change to the location of the headlights, moving inner and outer headlights in one stud each. Subtle M-Sport colours blended into the grille. One of the panel changes that had to be made in the rear section of the body over the wheel arch was replacing the original 3x7 Curved Panels (no Lime) and #6/#7 Panels - using a combination of 3x11 Curved Panels and #1/#2 Panels instead. The rear taillights have additional Trans-Clear Plates incorporated into taillights similar to the actual M4. Tow hooks changed to Red, an expensive alternative to Blue, but they are more correct. Also a safety taillight added just below centre BMW badge. The exhaust assembly behind the right-hand wheel arch was built with 2x2 Round Fluted Bricks and finished off with a 2x2 Barrel. Behind the front wheel arch the are small Fence Panels for vents. Rear mounted strut brace added alongside a simple roll cage structure, cross brace behind the seats and singular supports by the ‘A’ Pillars. The HOG is mounted through the White Lift-arm. Although they are not the same scale, the M4 GT3 and M1000 RR look fantastic together on the shelf. Both are built in Lime with similar contrasting Blue brake calipers, Light-Bluish Grey accents and sporting minimal decals. Thanks @Lox Lego for another awesome car!
