  1. One thing i really like about this hobby is all the vehicles i find out about that i didn't even know existed. I thought i knew about every kind of loader there is then this thing shows up and proves me wrong. And this moc is really good looking. Might build it some day when i've done the projects i have planned for now.
  2. That is a great looking truck. Those tires almost makes it look the a real truck.
  3. I'm finally finished building. It sure is a nice set. A bit hard to control though since i didn't put on any stickers. I have to guess what position of the gear stick does what action. Besides cranes are much more fun when you don't have to stop to switch functions all the time. But i wont be modding this anytime soon. It's late now so tomorrow i'll begin placing this beside other sets for size comparison and begin building 9398.
  4. Go for it. I'm also a little tempted to get into GBC but need to get some large base plates and some balls.
  5. I was going to post this in the third party wheels thread but then realized that it would end up on page 12 and could get lost so here goes. I found these links when searching for info about beadlock wheels. That link goes to wikipedia which provides some nice info, but i wanted more but didn't find anything better than that. What i did find was some interesting links from about.com. Non of this is about Lego vehicles but that doesn't really matter. It is still true for other kinds of RC-cars. What is a wheel and how is it different from a rim or the tire. For what the words mean look here. I sure have messed this up more than once. http://rcvehicles.about.com/od/rctires/f/rctirewheel.htm What is the difference between on-road and off-road wheels. Useful even for those using original Lego tires. http://rcvehicles.about.com/od/rctires/f/rctiresonoff.htm So just what is that rock crawling thing and what do i need to know to build and drive such a vehicle. http://rcvehicles.about.com/od/land/a/RCRockCrawler.htm And lastly info about beadlocks and whether they are better than glued tires. Useless for Lego but could be fun to know. http://rcvehicles.about.com/od/tiremods/f/Beadlock-Tires.htm
  6. Ok. Here is wikipedia on the subject on beadlock. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beadlock Beadlock wheels are recommended for the third party tires i've seen but before this i didn't know what the heck beadlocks are or why i should care. Well worth reading. In short beadlocks as the name implies are something used to clamp the beads on a tire to the wheel so it doesn't come of. Not needed so much on road as off.
  7. When last year did we first hear about a competition? I reckon that if one happens it will be tied to one of this years sets and not last years so no more rc cars.
  8. I got this set when it was available in stores but didn't like it much. Sure the parts are nice but i remember the steering being difficult to move so i was surprised to see those same parts used in many recent race cars. Then again those cars don't use the same tires. Looks like TLG should stick to smaller tires on more axles because this and the unimog are examples of vehicles with crappy steering without modification. And you shouldn't have to mod a car for it to steer well. While i still haven't finished building the crane, just the crane itself left, it's still a really heavy vehicle with a nice smooth steering. Sure hope next year doesn't bring any more big vehicles. I can't comment on the super cars since the latest one i own is the 8880 but i don't recall reading any complaints about them and some of them is quite large.
  9. Please do. It'll be a few weeks before mine arrives but i'll keep the pic for reference. BTW what beads. I thought those was on the original rc-style wheels, not the tires. But i don't really know anything about that.
  10. Just don't hang something too heavy or it might fall over. From what i've read it is not as powerful as one can think. BTW this thread should be about the B-model not the crane.
  11. Same here. I had built too much of the superstructure when i saw efferman's post that i didn't want to go back and change anything.
  12. The bigger the set the bigger the need for sorting the parts.
  13. Regarding the gear wheels being on the same side. Here is a picture i took in a different angle than the one shown by TB:s. It is not possible to just flip the wheels as mentioned before. I'm sticking to the original crane. Not sure how long i will even keep it built. Maybe someday in the future i'll build an ultimate but not now.
  14. I sure i wont have to do something similar to the kind i ordered. I would probably mess it up.
  15. You will need a lot of room for this set. Even if you usually i really recommend that you divide the pieces in several small compartments or whatever you have available. Makes things easier in the end even if it takes longer before you start to build. I have built other sets by just tipping each bag in its own pile but in this time i didn't. Also don't open all the bags at once, just the ones for what you are about to build. So first open all the bags marked 1, then 2 and so on.
  16. Wow that is impressive. Monster is a correct word not meant as an insult because that is surely something i wouldn't want to meet. Then again i don't hang around in places were tunnelling is being performed. I thought all tunnelling machines was those giant snakelike thing but apparently smaller versions exist.
  17. I first built a 3-section boom based on Jennifer Clarks work. Look here for info. http://www.genuinemodels.com/ideas.htm Scroll down a bit. It uses an ordinary thread or string instead of the special pieces the official cranes use. Might be helpful if you ever feel the need to make your own crane in a size that wouldn't work well with the strings from this set.
  18. Set 8421 used the same trick, but yes other than that it has not been used on official models. Most cranes have been single stage and then such solution is not necessary.
  19. Why not? This is taking long enough and i have other things i want to do so i don't want to spend more time then necessary building the crane. It also makes me more tired having to constantly wonder if i have collected the correct pieces.
  20. Swedish S@H also says sold out. Good luck to those of you who ordered it.
  21. Yeah if possible i'll do the same. Hopefully it'll involve a set that's not to expensive or one i can afford to get that year and not the year after as have been the case recently.
  22. I would like to thank TLG. Thank you for making black and dark grey look almost identical. This is because of the half hour at least i just wasted correcting a mistake that could have been avoided if colors were easier to tell apart. More specifically i saw when i was gonna start step 115 on page 17 in book 3 that i was missing one dark grey liftarm 15L. So i started to look to see if i could find a place where i had used one instead of a black one. I couldn't so i had a look at the outriggers and sure enough the liftarms used opposite of the gear racks was supposed to be the same color as the gear racks (black) which mine clearly wasn't. After much struggle i finally got everything together again and i have tested both extending and lowering the outriggers and it appears to be working in sync as it should. The rear one was easier to remove than the front. In the front i had to realign the front steering axle since it became disconnected from the others. I've hated this bley stuff since i first heard of it and now more so. This model is wearing me down enough without mistakes. I sure hope the finished model is worth it.
  23. Very good looking SUV, and i'm not even fond of that type of vehicles.
  24. Well i for one wouldn't mind pretty much all of the suggestions mention here. Along with some more money to buy it all.
  25. Ah the nostalgia this brings. I was never able to buy it when it was released so i'm hoping to run into it at some second hand store or similar. If only because of those airtanks.
