  1. I tried reinstalling Ris 2.0 since i kept getting an error message about a critical error but it didn't help. I used the instruction found here that worked until step 8. My tower was not identified even though i installed the prolific drivers. Then i remembered that i used to program in nqc in a program called brickx command central. I was delighted that the program was still being developed but unfortunately the program didn't find the rcx. Now i'm gonna eat dinner and then perhaps try to install it under linux again and this time also try bxcc. I feel that the main problem except for a lousy laptop not wanting to run a old program even it should be able to handle is that the tower is not found. Perhaps due to the converter. I tried searching for the number posted earlier but few hits and no good ones makes me think that it's not a useful serial number.
  2. If only my laptop wasn't so darn slow. Anyways while i wait for it i should perhaps say that the only number i can see on the adapter says: 501213-0000 HC SK
  3. Well mostly i would like it if the usb converter would work under wine, but i think it does that because i have used it with my steering wheel and that worked. OK the windows games under wine recognized the existence of the steering wheel when i selected it in the preferences but refused to actually steer the vehicle. This at least proves that wine recognizes the converter cable which at the time didn't have any special drivers installed. I have tried using a command under linux (lsusb) that lists usb-devices and it doesn't seem to find the adapter. Kinda weird but anyways. If anyone can point me to windows drivers for an adepter i could try them on my laptop. I'm llooking for some other driver under linux but without a name it's hard. I should probably some up before this post becomes too long. I want to use an adapter cable that is about a foot long to connect a serial tower to usb and if possible under linux, otherwise i would use my laptop even though i don't want to but the important thing is getting the rcx to work again as easily as possible. Last time i used it was on an older computer that had a serial port on it.
  4. I've spent most of the day installing the software for Mindstorms RiS 2.0. I first tried installing it using wine on linux which did to my surprise work. Well until i got to the important part, making the tower connect to the rcx. See i don't have the 2.0 set, just the software. I figured that since it used usb that it would make my serial tower from 1.5 work with an adaptor cable, but it didn't. I tried selecting both the usb-tower and the serial but the light on the tower never lit up and i kept getting error messages. After trying it on a virtual windows install with the same trouble i decided to try it on my laptop running win7. The virtual install failed because if the host (linux) can't find some hardware, neither will the guest. But i still wanted to try. Well the laptop was a dud as well. Last thing i did was to install the 1.5 on my main computer thinking that it at least was made for the serial tower and might find it despite the usb-connection. Well the first thing it did upon starting was to tell me it didn't find any com-ports, then flip the bird at me and crash. So what now. While typing this i got to thinking about controller cards and back plates with serial plugs on them. Well the back plates are really cheap but require a certain kind of connector on the motherboard which i don't think i have. My motherboard says nothing about having serial connectors inside. The controller cards use pci-express so they would fit but i don't know if they would work. And they aren't exactly cheap. Beyond that the only thing i can think about is getting a usb-tower or an older computer with serial connector. The towers aren't that cheap so i'm better off with the controller cards. But i don't know if they work on newer operating systems. Does win 7 and 8 even support com ports anymore? Surely someone here has a rcx and can answer this. BTW maybe it's me but when i tried searching for help i seemed to get every thread using the word mindstorm even when i tried to include other words to get fewer result. Oh and i got interested in RiS again since i'm going to get into GBC and had at least one idea the needs programming.
  5. Just checked swedish s@h and everything is back to normal. So what did they do that recuired removing all the sets and then add them back? Considering how long time this thread has been going on and since i can't start my own polls i'll use this thread. Which do you think will be released first. 2H14 or the new PF parts? Feel free to comment. I hope that the part will come first but i really don't know. I'm glad that i didn't pay much attention of this subject before this summer. Those of you that did must be really upset by now.
  6. I just checked swedish S@H and both those categories are empty.
  7. I understand exactly what you feel. I sure hope these instructions aren't so damn spread out like the original was. It could easily have had half the number of steps if only a few more parts where added per step.
  8. That looks like a really fun prank to use on someone.
  9. Sure if the crawler cost so much so develop it would make sense to sell more of it. Especially if it has a plain box and no printed license plate. Then again i could go for RM8 on a plate, even if only a sticker. Wouldn't be the first time a designers name ended up on a license plate.
  10. I'm all for a non-exclusive 41999. The coloring on rims and other special stuff seems really fragile if i understand correctly. That is fine for a display model but if the model is to be parted out and the pieces left to rub against other pieces the silver on the liftarms and the white on the rims might not be there very long. Since those parts have regular counterparts it would be easy to use those in a non-exclusive set with otherwise identical pieces. If this set is made as ordinary the blue parts which i believe many want will be more regular and that too will put a lower price on BL-sets. But it must be around until some time next year or not show it right away because my Lego budget is all used up at the moment.
  11. I managed to make all 4 outriggers dark grey. Found out about 10 steps later and had to spend about half an hour switching the dark grey for black.
  12. Thanks for those files. Now i have some more work before i part out 8109 and 8110.
  13. That price when converted to SEK is similar to what i paid in Sweden from a different retailer so no i don't think it's fishy. BTW it sucks that the crane was only about 300 SEK more expensive than 9398. Then again lots of people buy it from S@H something i would never do unless i was really rich.
  14. I had to do some searching but now i see that stickers do come in A4 format as a single sticker per sheet and not just as 10 or 20 or something in small rectangles like i thought. Still for this set it's easier for me to simple not use stickers but if i ever feel like making my own at least i know that i don't have to rely on double-sided tape like i thought i would. Nice review Sariel, love those hamsters. Now i feel even more for building it but i have some other sets that needs taking care of so i'll leave it built for a while more.
  15. About that. I thought that no one bothers using it any longer since the new parts from 9398 is perhaps easier to use due to their size. Shortly after i learned about this one and sariels F1 car and now i know differently. Nice to see these parts still being used. I must remember to put mine to use sometime.
  16. Yes construction makes sense to licence but is still not needed. Sure we could have a Cat vehicle but how much different would it be from any other mostly yellow technic vehicle. The Unimog is unique as for as i know for i have seen lots of trucks but non that small yet versatile. Normal size trucks would be nice to have in flagship scale but the only truly unique about it would be the cab design. I mean we could argue forever whether or not 42009 is a liebherr as the color scheme would imply or some other brand but it doesn't matter. TLG doesn't really need to bother with licenses unless the vehicle in question is unique which most construction machinery isn't.
  17. Wow i really like the mix of studded and studless. I have a hard time seeing where studless ends and studded begins.
  18. Here is a page i found long ago with some hints for designing sliding doors. http://www.engineeringwithabs.ch/sdoors.htm It is only one door not motorized but make 2 of them and connect a gear rack to each one and you should have something like in the video.
  19. Yeah but then i would still have to deal with the glue from the tape on the part or the sticker which might not look so good when the set have been parted out.
  20. So your instructions are hungry for ABS.
  21. That looks like one powerful clutch. Can't wait to see what model you put it in.
  22. Well is looks like the 3-5 week shipping time need to be changed a bit because the tires arrived today, just one week after i ordered them. Still it will be some time before i have something to mount them on. I guess i could put them on my 9398 but it will still be a few hours before i'm done building it. I sure didn't think it would be this fast but i don't mind at all.
  23. I figured since these links are about vehicles many Technic builders make that it belong here. but if that's the case feel free to move this thread. Any thoughts about the info in the links other than that might not belong in this section?
