This is a new stepper designed for use with the power functions servo motor. The output will spin 90 degrees every time the servo fully turns to the right or left and returns to center. The basic concept is that when the servo leaves it’s center position one of the ratchets on the differential housing disengages. As it continues to rotate the other ratchet stops the housing from moving, rotating the output. When it returns to center the engaged ratchet allows the housing to slip, so the output remains stationary. If you plan on building this yourself and it is not turning reliably check that the ratchets can rotate easily and the rubber band has enough tension.

Yes, that’s what I’m looking for. Ideally it would have very little change in gear ratio, but definitely not too much gearing down(unlike a worm gear). Both sides should be able to rotate in both directions, and it needs to be fairly torque resistant. If it helps, I’m using it for a three speed differential gearbox. I need to make sure the axle from the differential can’t back drive when the driving ring is disengaged.

Hi everyone, I’m wondering if there are any alternatives to worm gears. I need something that can only be driven one way, but I don’t want the extreme reduction provided by the worm gear. Do you have any ideas?

Yes, it must because it’s a three speed. I even made a similar one and it worked. The description mentions something about applying an radial force to the axle to stop it from rotating when torque is applied to the output , but I don’t know how that is achieved.

Can anyone explain how this gearbox works to me? I understand what happens when the driving ring is engaged, but I don’t get why the differentials output doesn’t spin freely when the driving ring is disengaged. Gearbox Video
