  1. Love the pic of all three together! I think the orange one is my favourite. The red pantographs are cool too!
  2. Thank you all! I'm glad you think so - proportions were more important to me than capturing every small detail, particularly since I don't have to worry about fitting minifigures in there. Making this has given me a new appreciation for Sariel's scaler tool, among other things!
  3. This is phenomenal! The scale is very deceptive. Great use of parts with small features to get that tiny greenling!
  4. Wow, this is surely the angriest of the lot! This looks great, really unique shape.
  5. Thank you! Yes, it uses the smallest LEGO train wheel. It's the closest fit at this scale, and aesthetically it's the one that looks the best as well IMO. I have briefly thought about motorisation - but only briefly. There is a fair bit of space inside, so some Circuit Cube bits would probably fit. I think traction would be the main issue; even pushing it around now on the TrixBrix track, the wheels don't spin all the time, so it would need some extra grip to pull it along. I did see someone who motorised these wheels using rubber bands and a Technic half bush, but I'm not sure how well that worked. If I'm feeling brave down the line (pun intended), I may try and make some older locos with bigger wheels that can accommodate o-rings or rubber bands. I think the next loco I try will be the Re 4/4 II, and the next wheel size up would probably fit quite well for that, so it might be more straighforward to power. But for now I'm content pushing this around by hand!
  6. Hello Train Techies! A few weeks ago, I decided I'd like to make a model of a Swiss locomotive on LEGO's narrow-gauge track. So, I did... But not the one I intended! Initially I was going to make something at minifigure scale, and I probably stil will at some point. But during the planning I noticed that using the narrow-gauge track as scaled standard (1,435mm) gauge track gave a scale of almost exactly 1:64 (1:63.77, to be precise). So I decided to make something at that scale instead! You may be familiar with the locomotive - after all, there have been loads of great brick-built models of it already. This is the Re460, or Lok2000 on the other side of the Röstigraben. It's the main passenger workhorse of the SBB/CFF/FFS fleet, and one that I grew very familiar with growing up around Lake Geneva. Although I haven't seen many LEGO models at this scale, it's not an uncommon one in other areas of modelling. It's known as S gauge in train circles, but is more commonly used for miniatures and Hot Wheels/Matchbox cars, among other things. It makes this loco roughly 5.5 studs wide - this model is, nominally, 5.6 wide. So aside from the wheels being on the small side, proportionally I think it's alright! It can handle R84 TrixBrix track, but won't go much smaller than that without further modification. This is my first attempt at any sort of LEGO train, and although I'm pleased with the result I think there is still room for improvement. The fluted bricks mean I haven't got the CFF logo on the side; the area around the cab is a bit too angular for my liking; and that coupling probably won't haul much rolling stock as is. Nevertheless, I'm quite proud of the result. Speaking of rolling stock - I do have more planned at this scale, so watch this space! I hope you enjoy my model as much as I enjoyed making it. Stay tuned...
  7. While they were popular, it's hard to draw a comparison with how TLG makes themes these days. I've talked about it a lot elsewhere, but one of the most interesting articles about LEGO I read was how the digital age has changed how they've had to market their themes. (IIRC it was in Blocks magazine for the 10 year anniversary of Ninjago.) It essentially said that sets with a dedicated backstory and associated film or TV show or *insert other media here*, that will last a long time, are far more likely to resonate with kids today than a line with vague to no information that lasts for a year or two. I loved getting separate themes as a kid (SPIII, Aqua Raiders, Adventurers, Vikings to name a few), but I have noticed that sets of that ilk pop up now and then in Creator or City sets instead like @TeriXerimentioned. My guess is that making them under existing umbrellas reduces the need for additional marketing material (as well as the actual number of sets needed), but that's pure speculation on my part.
  8. You are, and he did. None of the usual reputable sources have picked it up so I'm inclined to believe it's a fake.
  9. TeddytheSpoon replied to Rubblemaker's post in a topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
I think they were inferring the same thing I thought - it's hard to tell which is the front, which is the back! That's not a criticism though, it makes for a very unique ship! Small detail, but I like the triangular tiles for a different take on the bumblebee stripes.
  10. I'm certainly not super worried about scale - it matters to me until it becomes inconvenient! But that's a good point. Space is at a premium in my place which is where the size restriction comes from, but perhaps I should start with the loco(s) and see what fits best.
  11. That's very helpful, thank you! And thanks for doing the maths for me - as it turns out the vehicle in question is 2.65m wide, so 8 studs would be bang on the money! Well, I do like a challenge... I do remember seeing that Malayan Railway vehicle the first time round, nice to be reminded of its existence! It seems the weight of the vehicle is enough to prevent wheel slip without too many carriages, which is another thing I was wondering.
  12. Hello Train Tech! I've got a few Q's regarding LEGO train-ing; I've always wanted to make some but never had an idea of where to start until now. The basic idea I've had is an as-small-as-possible layout, but still at minifig scale, with the subject matter a Swiss metre-gauge line. So... 1. Track-wise, I'd like to avoid the 8-wide track in the interest of compactness. I know LEGO made some 4-wide track, what are custom options like for this size? (I've also considered using rollercoaster rails, but they seem a bit more restrictive for a 'normal' train.) 2. I'll happily be corrected if I'm wrong, but for standard gauge trains 7-wide seems to be a common building standard. Is there a similar one for the smaller gauge trains (I would assume 5-wide), or is it entirely scale-dependent? 3. Finally, are there any options for motorising trains this small? Again, I assume if it is possible it will require some custom parts? Hopefully you can help - no doubt I'll be coming here a lot if I get around to tackling it! Otherwise, any general resources for starting out in LEGO train land are much appreciated!
  13. The red dishes with those sand-red gateways looks really nice! They came in black in at least one of the early Star Wars sets - Final Duel I, if I remember correctly. Not sure they were ever made in blue though.
  14. The trouble with judging how well a given set sells is that it's almost purely anecdotal evidence. As mentioned TLG will be the only ones who have any kind of idea. I haven't even seen it on sale anywhere here in Finland, for instance. That said, it's a set that I've seen almost universal praise for. So regardless of sales numbers I think LEGO will be aware just how much positive feedback there's been for it. The fact they keep dipping into the 'nostalgia' sets suggests to me it's done alright.
  15. Nice! I love how you've incorporated R2's various tools into the mech, like the buzzsaw or periscope. Very seamlessly done.
  16. Hello all! Making one of my all-too-infrequent visits to the Sci-Fi forum to share my latest MOC! (It's nice here, I should come round more often...) I've been enjoying taking part in some of the monthly challenges this year, and I thought it was about time to get involved in Nnovvember. The result is this, which I have dubbed the VVPR Raider! I wasn't sure which direction this would take until I picked up the two Technic panels from 5981 Raid VPR - one of my favourite sets from Space Police III. They were just going to be placeholders at first, but I'd already picked up lots of black and white pieces, so I figured why not pay tribute to it? It's tempting to label this as a 5981 redux, but I didn't stick to many of the design cues other than making it a SPIII Vic Viper. The only big common elements are the panels and cockpit, and even then the cockpit is the wrong shade of trans-blue. (That said, even if I knew where the original cockpit was, I think I'd still prefer this lighter one!) So the jury is out on whether this counts as a redux. Both of the minifigs have gone missing as well. Fortunately the space police officer and alien from Series 21 of the CMFs are good substitutes! The only thing I haven't figured out is what VVPR could stand for (Vigil, Vantage, Patrol and Recon is my best attempt so far). If you have any good suggestions, I'm all ears!
  17. Ooh, interesting choice of cockpit piece! I love seeing builds that stem from using a particular part. Looks more accurate from some angles than others but it's a take I've not seen before!
  18. Babe wake up, new wishlist wave just dropped! Phenomenal work as ever. I share your admiration for the Acclamator, it looks awesome! The scale difference with the speeder is a little jarring, but that's the smallest of nitpicks since it's a play set at the end of the day. Big fan of your V-wing fuselage as well. See LEGO, they don't have to just be flat wedge plates!
  19. Nothing I love more than a great episode I MOC, and this is a GREAT episode I MOC! Super impressed with the level of detail on the inside. Easy to forget just how big this ship is sometimes!
  20. Gotta say I'm not at all bothered about Mara Jade. That said, she's probably the most well-known Legends character after Revan, so she would be a good choice for one of these figs, although given we're getting Malak if be surprised if we got two Legends characters. What I would like to see is characters from concept art. Luke Starkiller got a minifig in TSS, would be awesome to see that translated to real life.
  21. I don't think the top half has been in LEGO sets disassembled, or if they have I don't recall it (I have a feeling the bottom half has). I'm almost certain you can get it disassembled in Studio though. As for legality, I guess it depends on your definition... I always took that to be connection methods that put undue stress on a part when connected. After all, minifigure hands don't come disassembled from torsos, and they're definitely fair game for me!
  22. Do the 2x2 turntable bases have the same thing? I tend to use those instead of the boat tiles, as they're slightly lower profile and more visually interesting. Can't remember if the clutch power is that different between them though.
  23. I'm becoming a massive fan of this scale of ship! The Razor Crest is my favourite, love the greebles on the top.
  24. Awesome work! I love seeing comparisons with MOCs that people have updated. Am I right in thinking those printed pieces at the back are from the old escape pod set?
  25. Any of the Naboo Starfighter sets, particularly the last two, would make for a good hangar scene from TPM. I have the 2011 one that's been on display for a long time on my shelves. You could throw in Maul, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon from 75169 as well. Another one would be the Battle of Scarif, using 75171, plus a TIE Striker and/or U-wing, depending on the space available. Easy enough to combine with random stormtroopers or rebel minifigures if you have them lying around. Final suggestion is Battle of Takodana using 75139 and 75140, with some extra FO baddies. Both seem to be relatively inexpensive on the aftermarket if you don't have them, and 75140 is a great set to boot!
