Widening the ship would look odd too. Maybe you could lower the cannon decks a bit. A Ship of the line can't be really build with the standard hull parts.

With the standard LEGO hull parts it looks a bit slim and thus too top heavy. It's really hard build a large ship like that, while being so much limited by the width of the hull parts.
