  1. Really fun little build, I wish we saw more of these! That roof technique looks lovely, and I like the curved tiles for the gateway, and of course the opening for stone dropping is fun!
  2. Ooh, what a lovely ship! Everything is extremely well done, especially that rigging (I'm gonna have to go purist on that sometime!), but I'm definitely taking notes on the use of those golden crowbars and the beautiful curves you've managed on the hull with those large 4x4 corner curved slopes! Such an elegant and smooth shape Callout to the ingenious attachment of the railing on the angled part astern too!
  3. I hope you're happy with this 'cause that's some lovely photography! The pose and rigging are of course great as well, must have been a pain to hold it for long enough to be painted though!
  4. Aye, it's a pretty good compromise then! Or then again, you could try black slopes, they'd probably blend in fine if you had any on hand
  5. Aha, that's quite clever! I had noticed that one Steve had his back to the camera and was therefore likely sporting a different face, but I hadn't noticed the absence of the complete original! But then, you had at least (a few of!) Steve's face, whereas I will likely be rummaging my sister's collection with my fingers crossed even for that!
  6. Lovely frame, the water and island look quite pretty too against the brown and gold you've got going on there! In general the ship is quite nice as well (those brown bars for rigging at this scale are great!), but I think it's a bit too chaotic for the eye to capture what's happening Going a bit simpler, maybe less colors (I know the red and white sails and the black in the hull are obvious Classic Pirate references, but if you were to make the sails all white, the lower hull and masts all brown (or dark brown ) except the cannons, and keep the black, yellow and red for a few highlights and deck details (like maybe a black capstan, yellow railings, and some red on the flags) I feel like the overall visual impact would be much stronger and the explosions and wreckage would stand out a lot more clearly. At any rate, if you give it a try I'd love to see how you mod it! Otherwise, as I said on your other entry, I'm loving the presentation and the system style branding! I hope at least some of the suggestions are useful, if not for this than for future builds! Keep up the good work!
  7. Ah, nice little micro, that jib sail is particularly sweet, don't know that I'd seen that part before! The birds are a nice addition as well, although it'd be great if you could figure out some way of connecting the two halves of the larger one - after puzzling my brain over it for a while the best I could come up with to keep your current technique would be a rubberband doubled over a hooked a couple of times over the two clips (if you had time to do that I'm honestly quite curious as to whether it would work perfectly or not at all! Pretty sure it'll be one of the two, hahaha!) The shark fin is a fun addition too, and if you're feeling adventurous (and have enough leeway parts-wise to still meet the category requirements!) a few curved yellow plates beneath the ship might look fabulous for the sunset reflecting off the ocean - or then again might not, never venture never win! I do quite like the Viking plumes for flags too, I'd only ever seen or used hands for that before at this scale that I recollect (or horns, to be sure) - this is the second time I'm seeing the plumes for this contest though, I'm wondering if I've been blind all this time or its just the new craze!
  8. Lovely. I'm astonished at the amount of research, time, and thought that clearly went into this, and of course the rigging and hull shape are fantastic, but my favorite part has definitely got to be the deck, with its belaying pins, rain buckets, and all the little details that are so often missing from our LEGO ships but soo sell the idea of it being a real, true-to-life vessel you're looking at! Sweet cannon designs too, especially for the obusiers - I don't recall ever seeing those in LEGO before and it's a great design - and of course I'm digging the inclusion of such a nice cabin interior too! That's the only part of the interior I missed out on my recent large ship, but yours is very classy. Overall just a phenomenal model, I'm very glad you finally got to accomplish your childhood dream here!
  9. Ahoy maties! It looks like I may have forgot to register for this 'ere competition but I mean to give y'all a run for yer money! I'm this guy, one of the founding (and current) leaders of the Brethren of the Brick Seas and currently in leadership of GoH as well, and also the guy who does the contest round-ups for BrickNerd, so obviously when I laid me headlights on this contest it was one I waren't like to miss out on! Hoping to build for at least the large category too (I'm not sure I can manage keeping meself to 200 parts ), but I hope to encourage and furnish plenty of C&C to the other competitors meanwhile! All the best to ye all!
  10. Oh, never mind, I got it now That is funny though That's a jolly version of Steve you've got there, mate! - I'm afraid I find myself in the same boat as ye not possessing the original figure, but ye've got a very proper merchant-looking figure there, so ye have! Really nice job mashing the Islander theme with some of the more modern pirate sets style and incorporating some of the fun playable features you'd find in a LEGO set - as far as who done the king in, I don't know, but that hook does sure look suspicious! All the animals, traps, and doors are really fun, and of course, gold!! I will agree with the critiques about the photography though - I usually take my pictures outside on a cloudy day or in the shade to get some nice diffused light and even shadows, or of course, as this is an outdoors island-y build you could even go for direct sunlight if you feel a bit more adventurous! Your shots are really nice a crisp, but a cleaner background and a consistent width on the pictures (you can resize them right here on EB if you want by double-clicking on them while editing the post ) would make it easier to scroll through and enjoy Definitely hoping we get more Islanders out of this competition! Unfortunately I don't think I have any of the parts for your Steve here either though, so I'll have to see what I can do myself, but all the best to ye, mate!
  11. A monkey!! I approve I love ships, and it's great to see one in its natural habitat (or at least very near it, haha) - I'm enjoying your go at the sails and rigging too, and Steve seems to have had a very impressive beard even as a little tyke! Sure signs of coming greatness As far as critiques go, I won't disagree with your large cannon (disagreeing with cannons, I find, is not good work ), but if you're looking for another voyage to the sea to mod this I do think some inverted slopes under the bow up at the front would be an improvement as the inverted staircase you've got right now doesn't look quite as adapted too cutting smoothly through the waves. But one way or the other, I'm sure this was a voyage Steve enjoyed, and you can't go far wrong when you've got a monkey!
  12. Oh, that's hilarious! Love all the different Steve's - poor Redbeard though, so close! The dim, confabulatory lighting on the first pic is gold too, and your writing style, superb. I'm very much enjoying all the little details too, like the gold, lantern snapped onto the wall, the map, teasure chest and parrot (presumably named Steve ), and of course the bottle chucked at ol' Redbeard's ruddy pate. I've got to admit I'm wondering why you went for grey between the floorboards (although I do agree something to break up the brown is handy), and I'd like tiles under the table myself, but I'm totally scraping the bottom of the barrel for critiques here A very nice and fun build, you've definitely made me laugh the most of this contest so far!! Cheers, matey!
  13. Ah, I'm lovin' this presentation, matey, this looks like it'd be so much fun to pour out of a classic set box and play with! The awning and palm tree are some great designs, and the treasure hidden under the planks is a great bit of added fun! Except for wanting an (obviously classic ) monkey I haven't got anything else to nitpick, within your chosen style you've totally blown this outta the water! Lovely job and all the best in the competition!
  14. Ah! Old Steve is getting literary! Great job incorporating Steve's ensignia into the base, and I'm quite liking the shaping of the cabin section in the stern and the shaping the net gives to the water below! I'm quite curious as to the chair's armrests as well - they look quite clever but I can't quite make out what parts they are If I had some advice, well, for one if you were to place the tiles on the floor more loosely/press them down intentionally unevenly it would go great with the shrinking and creaking boards in the poem (although looking closely it seems like you may already be doing that? I'm not quite sure, but the right side looks like you may have done something of the kind, haha ), and then I also find (although it may be mostly personal taste ) that cutaways usually look better and more satisfying with some nice angles thrown in there - here's an example so you can see what I mean. In general I'm quite enjoying seeing you come up with something different than the rest of the competition so far though, and I will say I do love me some nice dark brown! May the winds (whatever the poem says ) be always in your sails!
  15. Ah, I don't know why but that buttered crab really looks delicious! Great to see Steve hanging out with your BoBS character, and that candle bracket on the wall is a really nice design too, I'm going to have to remember that! Same with the bars under the shelf on the left wall, I love how it looks like they're doing something when we all know that the shelf is really holding them up after all I agree with MW about tiling the top of the wall, but the barrels look fine to me since that's the way LEGO usually tops them in sets The parchment-y sort of background works great for presentation too, another solid entry from you, mate!
