MOC: The LKAB IORE
Nice job. The sideways cheese slopes are interesting. Seeing the two engineers (maybe one is a conductor?) side by side is very convincing for going 8 Wide for my first train MOC.
-
How do you add to your train collection?
Just got my second train a few weeks ago (Maersk) from ebay after watching it come and go from the Lego store because I had no interest way back when. LOL The first was 60052 that sat in the box until I needed the PF for the Maersk. Just got 60051 a couple days ago and having a lot of fun with it. Want to build my own but will probably cough up the extra dinero to get 7938. That brick built front is sweet. The sets are great way to get started and you can decide what you want or don't want from there, and use the extra parts for MOCs or MODs.

Flexible tracks
I'm new to Lego trains as well but have many years as N Scale model railroader so I got quite a surprise when I saw Lego flex track for the first time as it looks nothing like the standard rail--A piece here or there is all I care to use....a couple pieces of flex in reversing loops on occasion. It does look okay for simulating a track on a short bridge or something or even to add a bit of irregularity to the regular pattern of standard track, but i would not replacing standard straight rail with it.
-
Where to buy Straight PF Rail?
Was just on the ME Models site prior to catching up here--a wider radius curve would be terrific.

Where to buy Straight PF Rail?
Thanks for the idea. I've been thinking about joining my local group near Washington DC....

Where to buy Straight PF Rail?
Thanks very much for the link! I'm not sure why I was only getting the 9V stuff when I searched. You have restored my faith in Bricklink...and squashed my faith in my own search skills. LOL!

Where to buy Straight PF Rail?
Can straight rail from current train sets be purchased from Pick A Brick? I searched for element id #6070018 but nothing turned up and Bricklink only seems to have 9V rail. I dislike the flex track stuff or the metal rails. Thanks for any help.

Lego in Barcelona
Before I left the US I found a store on Bricklink in Catalonia, turns out it's the same guy! Rickebrick is great but his store in Bricklink is even better. I'm all set now for when I need really specific stuff.

Lego in Barcelona
Thanks for the contribution to the thread. I've checked out Palau once before (muy cara), I was trying to remember the name; I liked that shop besides the Lego stuff. I may visit Diagonal Mar this afternoon just to have a look around. For some reason I'm in the mood for Space Police. I hope they have some. After spending a week in the hospital I want to to treat myself!

The Best Spaceship Released By LEGO
Galactic Mediator and Galactic Enforcer are both at the top of my list. Something about their respective shapes really appeals.

Lego in Barcelona
The maps link didn't work. There is a Toys R Us I will check out in the coming days, I just wanted to hit more local spots first. I went to a couple shops today but the best had to be El Corte Ingles in Placa Catalunya (center of the city and ground zero for tourists). There was a good selection of themes: Star Wars (the most), Creator, City, Atlantis, Ben 10, Toy Story, Technic but NO Space Police <GGrrrr>. I think the prices were a bit high for some things (€16 for SW BP) and okay for others (€10 for Atlantis 8057). The prices might be a few euros less at more local toy/hobby shops but the selection won't be that great. If you are walking around the Eixample neighborhood (basically downtown) and you see any kind of hobby shop, have a look they most likely have some lego sets also. This has got to be one of the coolest shops in town and it's in my neighborhood!: Robótica They sell mostly Mindstorms and Power Functions parts.

Lego in Barcelona
I did some research into the pricing but I'm not so sure how it compares with the store. Maybe I will just buy something small as a test case. I did find an online lego shop today that looks pretty good--the closest thing to shop@home I've seen. I'm off to a local toy store to do some "research".

Lego in Barcelona
I usually buy stuff online when I'm in the states but I was hoping for some "instant gratification". <chuckle> Maybe I can just buy a couple sets for parts from whatever store I find downtown. I haven't found any Space Police sets here anywhere, that's what I really wanted.

Lego in Barcelona
Greetings from Spain, I've been here almost three months now without my Lego (back in the US) and I'm going through serious withdrawals. Anybody know where I can pick up a variety of different sets in Barcelona? I found a couple shops in the city center but they only had a few sets. Thanks for any help! Cheers

Contests?
Thanks for the help folks...Looking forward to participating in some contests soon. And yes I'm aware FBTB is a separate entity. I entered my first contest there! My one and only MOC--Vader's Podracer. Hahahha...
-
Contests?
Does anyone know of one place to go that lists current building contests? I'm looking for a contest to join and I can't seem to find any here or on FBTB. Am I missing a sticky or some guideline or something? Maybe no contests are going right now? Thanks

What's your ethnicity?
Guess I'm the only American of African decent here...as usual. Moving to Spain soon so I'm not sure what I will be as time goes on and my dominant language and cultural patterns change! I like to immerse myself in different cultures, I'm a citizen of the world I guess. Couldn't agree more with these folks:

Any Apple fans?
Agreed, this is a foundation and I'm sure many of those "kinks" were design decisions by Apple. Nothing like a new version to generate some revenue. Don't forget Apple is a public company that has to keep shareholders/analysts/whoever happy, the bottom line matters more than anything. It's a pity they have become something of a pop culture fad. They still have some pro apps (FCP, Aperture, etc...) but they certainly don't pay as much attention to people that actually use their computers for work. $50 upcharge just to get a matte screen on the "high end" 17" Macbook Pro? And what happened to all the great matte IPS monitors they used to make? Time to look at LaCie, NEC etc... I've liked their goods for a few years now but as I move more and more into the pro realm I'm considering alternatives. They make a nice laptop as far as entertainment all around machines go--the MacBook is terrific (unless you like games). The iPod Touch is nice and very useful.

Console Wars
Chuckle, that's cool, I'd feel like a dork if you had no idea who I was. I actually have been a member here for almost a year but I'm the ultimate lurker I guess. That Freespace2 mod is cool. It was old when I discovered it but I actually have the original Descent: Freespace, it was the first game I bought a joystick for and then I just went nuts with the MechWarrior series. Man this is making me all nostalgic... I think you are better at the technical underpinnings than me but I didn't think the PS3 had hit the wall just yet. Perhaps some developers are just a little more lazy than others but the general consensus seemed to be that the cell or whatever hadn't been fully exploited yet. Meh, just so the games are good technically and artistically I don't care. It's a shame so much junk gets put out on consoles, especially with all this so called "casual gamer" flotsam, thankfully there is BioWare, Bethesda and other topnotch studios developing games for the consoles. Anyway, not upgrading every 6 months anymore sounds prime, I was wondering when that would cease to be the norm. I think that whole trend slowed down after the FarCry/Crysis episode... I'm seriously considering building a linux box just because of the VFX stuff I'll be working on--may as well load some games. Then again, you know how far those funds would go on Bricklink?!

Console Wars
Splitscreen is so fun....I'm in exact same boat, well I used to be until I decided not to rebuild my gaming rig, switched to using Apple computers and committed myself to console gaming 100%. I miss the RTS and FPS games--that was usually all I played on the PC. My favorite mod had to be Desert Combat. For someone who actually carried his rig around with that DFI LanParty MOBO computer strap this is a sad confession but I just got tired of upgrading my hardware I guess (I was an FPS addict). That and I needed/wanted space around ye olde desk. Goodbye 5.1 speakers, headset, joystick, fat keyboard and Nostromo gaming pad. I did keep all my PC games so who knows, maybe one day I will rebuild my system and hope they run on whatever OS is "current". Currently, I have a PS3/360/PS2/gamecube/n64/wii and original xbox all hooked up in my small home theater + GB SP, GB ADV and PSP (White Darth Vader edition of course). I still play each system, no cheesy arcade or retro downloads for me! Nothing like shoving the cartridge for the original Episode 1 racer into the N64 and barfing at the fat polygons and weak textures. <chuckle> The cost of console games is high but I generally wait to pick them up used and generally only pay half the original MSRP or less. BTW CP5670, I'm the guy that built Vader's Podracer, we hung out a bit at Brickfair last year. Didn't know you are a gamer...

Photographing LEGO
Good call on the aperture, it was shot at f/6 or so on an old Powershot G2 back in April. I've a bit more experience now so I will be taking new moc photos. Thanks for the feedback.
