Wow, that sucks. FM was one of the last hold-outs for not jacking the price up. If Walmart doesn't have Series 4 I just might have to get the 2-3 I like most and skip the rest.

I know. The good thing is as long as Lego keeps the MSRP at $1.99 then that is what Walmart will keep it at. Of course that's if you're lucky enough to find them at your local Walmart. Or if you live in the Pacific NW and are near a Fred Meyer, one of the few other stores that have kept it at $1.99. (I'm looking at YOU Target)

There are a few really cool figures, the standout one being the hazmat guy. Am I the only one that thinks the speed skater looks like Wilma from the Flintstones? (In the shot where they are in 4 rows of 4) I am disappointed by a few though. Gnome. Come on. Another fisherman but with shorter legs? really.....? Skateboarder/Surfer. We already have one of each from series 1 and 2. Lets get some unique ones. Plenty of figures that haven't been done yet. Soccer player (One with the trophy). Lets stop repainting the mini-minifigure trophy. The worse thing is its that figures ONLY accessory. Pretty lame looking if you ask me.

That was me, and I live in WA. It was 2am when I originally wrote that and it was all I could think of.

I added a couple close up shots: the elfs ear, the dancers hair flower, the cyborg and gorilla guys faces (the sweat is awesome), the rappers radio (its not a sticker), and the helmet design from the race driver.

Yes. All-in-all the mummy is a nice figure except the fact that its stark bone white. I thought it should be an aged yellow color instead. EDIT: Posted a pic of the samarai torse. Someone a while back requested that I think.

There are four figures with helmets and a ton with hair. The problem is its tough to feel exactly what roundish objects are. Maybe I have a poor sense of touch I don't know. Here are the pics. Let me know if you want something specific. Flickr

In some cases yes, feeling the bag is probably going to be easier. There are a few tough ones to feel like the race car driver. I will post some pics when I get back from the YMCA in about 1.5 hours.

Just a bit of info. The Fred Myer I got mine from had only a single box of series 1 (ever), and did not get series 2 at all. (I checked every day for many weeks.) They had at least 7-8 series 3 boxes on display in three different areas. They had a couple on a display rack in the middle of the main isle and a few different stacks in various places in the Lego isle itself. I don't think people need to worry about saving some for the kids. It still is kind of lame to buy all 11 boxes that a store has, but like someone said it's the price of capitalism. I could take pics of the figs for people that wanted to see a specific part, but the only camera I have is the crappy one on my iPhone.

There already was a way to find any specific figure. I correctly guessed all 16 figures by feel alone. This way just makes it easier.

I can verify (partially at least) that the code is authentic. I don't remember which ones came out of which packs, but they do have the series of raised bumps on the bottom heat seal. Let hope that series 4 is already in production and has the same code structure.

To the one who asked about price, yes the same. Fred Meyer is one of the few stores that charge Lego's $1.99 (Walmart being the other, but they are hit or miss for stocking them). All the other stores including Target have followed TRU's lead in charging $2.99. Greedy ...... In reality the chances of what what you want are fairly good with a few exceptions. See my original post with the breakdown for thoughts on how easy they are. The race car driver would be fairly tough to find in store without spending a couple hours in the toy isle feeling the packages. I agree that Lego's choice of making the fisherman rare is weird. Don't get wrong, I think its one of the coolest in the set. But it doesn't have a whole lot of MOC capability other than to make a Deadliest Catch set or something.

I went to my local Fred Meyer and bought a box. They had at least 7 or 8 boxes sitting on the shelf in various places. Before you complain I have no intention of keeping all 60 from the box. I am only keeping one of each (plus my one screwup) and returning the rest for someone else to enjoy. I was able to guess all 16 correctly by feel alone. I got careless toward the end and opened a snowboarder after feeling the visor but no laser gun and assumed it was the race car driver. There are no barcodes and the packages are identical. EDIT: The gorilla and the mummy are the only two with printed backs. Here is the breakdown and my thoughts. Keep in mind I only opened one of each (plus the extra snowboarder). I feel the numbers are 99% accurate as once you know what to look for it's easy to feel for the bow in the elf, or the laser gun with a visor for the cyborg etc. Elf – 3 Very easy to feel the shield or bow. Cool figure and comes with a lot of accessories. Fisherman - 2 Very easy to feel the long skinny fishing pole. Again cool figure with lots of accessories. Hawaiian dancer - 1 This was one of the tougher figures to feel, possibly because there was only a single one in my box. The skirt is a pain to put on and mine did not fit exactly right. Indian chief - 3 Very easy to feel the headdress or spear. Sumo wrestler - 4 Moderately easy to feel the trophy. Might have to shake the pack a bit to get it to drop to the bottom. Street punk - 5 Very easy to feel the microphone. Just don’t accidentally think it’s the maracas from the Hawaiian dancer. Snowboarder - 2 Moderately easy to feel the snowboard. Pilot - 4 Very easy to feel the backpack. Alien - 4 Moderately easy to feel. Find a laser gun then check for either the alien head or a visor (which means it’s the cyborg). Baseball player - 4 Very easy to feel the bat as the grip is unique. Samarai warrior - 4 This one was a little tougher for me, but if you can find the sword its easy. The problem is there is a lot of pieces and it’s hard to isolate one inside the pack. One thing to note, the body armor is a cheap soft plastic and not the hard plastic of the similar castle ones. Race car driver - 3 This was probably the toughest one to find. The only distinguishing thing is the visor. Since it’s very easy for pieces to get stuck finding a visor means it could be one of four figures. Tennis player - 3 Simple to find once you can feel the tennis racket. Gorilla costume - 3 Moderately easy to find as the banana is easy to find and the gorilla head is huge in the packaging. My wife got a big kick out of this guy. Cyborg – 4 Just like the alien, find the laser gun then look for an alien head or a visor. This figure it better than I expected. Mummy - 5 Fairly easy to feel, just find the scorpion as it’s all one piece and isn’t flat. This figure isn’t quite as cool as I thought it was be. Perhaps it’s because the figure is stark white and not an aged yellow like I imagined. There were also 3 packages with visors that I couldn’t tell which one it was. My guess is 2 were race car drivers but I couldn’t isolate enough pieces to be sure. There were also 3 other packages that I had absolutely no idea. I can say for sure that they were NOT the Indian, alien, gorilla, elf, or anything with a stick (fishing pole, laser gun, sword etc.). If I had to guess it would be perhaps the tennis player, sumo wrestler, or maybe even the Hawaiian.

The 1989 Sets versus 2009 Sets
I don't think the 2009 sets stand a chance considering who we are.... :) At the very least, the old sets have a nostalgic place with us. With that said.....if they started to release more complex (and thus expensive) sets geared for an AFOL I think the 2010 could easy win.

Now taking YOUR ideas for the future of LEGO Pirates theme
(kinda repeating here I guess) - A BIG imperial ship. I would love for it to be $150+ and complex. - A city/port type environment with detailed buildings. Basically an expanded imperial trading post. Again I don't mind paying $150+. And to the couple that said a skeleton/ghost ship. I think that would be cool, but with some creativity you could probably combine any pirate ship with the (castle) skeleton attack ship set to come up with a pretty good pirate themed ghost ship I would think.
