42177 Mercedes Benz G-500 4x4 MOD's and Improvements
Zerobricks replied to SNIPE's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingAdded to my LEGO slang database Trust me, you're gonna break the CV joints (at least in the front) way before you can make two 28 tooth bevel gears slip.

42177 Mercedes Benz G-500 4x4 MOD's and Improvements
Zerobricks replied to SNIPE's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingWhat's a comma panel? Also you can use the red diff gear with 28 bevel gears to drive diffs centrally and avoid 8 tooth gears.

Zerobricks replied to Ngoc Nguyen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingMaybe splitting the topic to the actual 1:8 Supercar and to the GWP might be a good idea?

[TC27] Lowrider
Zerobricks replied to Zerobricks's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThe model has been succesfully finished and recorded. Here are specifications of the physical model: Built out of 912 pieces Weighs around 850 grams 40 x 14,5 x 11 cm when totally raised Powered by 2x PU L and 2x PF L motors Controlled by a single BuWizz 3.0 in the boot So here she is in all of its physical glory: With everything opened up: Being a proper convertible, the roof can be raised: Rear view showing the suspension in action, the rear bumper and the exhausts: And same view, but with the suspension flipped - front lowered and the rear raised: And here's a video showcasing all the features and functions: I'm really happy with how it turned out, I tried hard to keep the design in a sweet spot between aesthetics, features, functionality and robustness and it shows. As usual, there is an LDD file of the model available for study here: https://bricksafe.com/files/Zblj/tc27-lowrider/Lowrider PF%2BPU.lxf And to finish off I would just like to thank to @Jim for organizing these competitions, having some fixed rules really inspires me to be creative, to think out of box and design stuff I usually wouldn't. EDIT: Jim, is there a way you can unlock the entry topic?

42172 - McLaren P1
Zerobricks replied to Ngoc Nguyen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingYou must be missing something... Spinning the handle in your model will do nothing, it will just spin the opposite side of the differential with a 4L axle with stop, which is totally loose.

42177 Mercedes G500 4X4
Zerobricks replied to SNIPE's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingIt depends a lot on what's the high difference of the links. The closer they are, the less sideways movement of the links, but then the axle has less rigid mounting... It's a compromise.

42177 Mercedes G500 4X4
Zerobricks replied to SNIPE's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingAgreed and there is plenty of slack in LEGO pieces for slight sideways motion. Also notice that the 5L suspension arm is attached to the 5L beam with 3 pins for extra strength.

42177 Mercedes Benz G-500 4x4 MOD's and Improvements
Zerobricks replied to SNIPE's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingOnly way I see you could fit a locking diff in the same axle width would be by using the 5 studded CV joints from the Ford GT to make 2 studs of room for the transmission ring. You would probably have to use 5 studded suspension arms too too keep everything nice and aligned.

Zerobricks replied to SNIPE's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modelinghttps://www.lego.com/en-us/product/mercedes-benz-g-500-professional-line-42177 Observations: Also has a 12 tooth clutch gear! 2 diff locks - so rear and central DNR + high/low gearbox

Axle Collection Thread
Zerobricks replied to efferman's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingInspired by the 42177 topic - specifically a 4x4 squared mod, I designed a very compact independent suspension with brick-built portal axles which also feature a proper hub bearing. They are actually same width as the 42110's saxles and only 2 studs wider than the 42177's axles: By using 5L links and double headed CV joints, I was able to make the suspension arms narrower: Additionaly, hubs are also very compact by meshing a 20 tooth spur gear to a 12 tooth bevel gear: While this setup is very compact, it is not suitable for high loads, so I recommend it for manual models only. Also please note, this is just a quick sketch up, I only built one hub IRL. LDD file is available here: https://bricksafe.com/files/Zblj/Misc/Compact independent portal axle.lxf

42177 Mercedes G500 4X4
Zerobricks replied to SNIPE's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingTrue. You can make an even more compact brick-built hub using the 99773 pieces and by skipping the hub bearings, but then it will not be as stiff... But I think we may be getting off-topic.

42172 - McLaren P1
Zerobricks replied to Ngoc Nguyen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingFrom my experiences building fast motorized cars... usually not, as long as the suspension angles are low. In this specific case it would actually cause toe-in which is much better than toe-out.

42177 Mercedes G500 4X4
Zerobricks replied to SNIPE's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingYou can always build a portal hub that fits the Defender rim like I did with my Tiger 6x6:

[TC27] Lowrider
Zerobricks replied to Zerobricks's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI'm really happy I managed to catch not one, but two new lurkers , thanks for the praise! I just received the missing parts, so I will record a video in the upcoming days. Yes, the windscreen color is tricky, but I decided to go black, since the 45° brick holding it is also black.
