Technic Chalange ?
DLuders replied to Legofan225's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingSince 2010, there have been Lego Technic Challenges. For 2010 and 2011, they were monthly challenges to build a particular type of creation. Then in 2012, The Lego Group had a competition to design a different body to the 4x4 Crawler. All of the competitions were on the Technic.Lego.com website. There have been no specifics yet for a possible 2013 Technic Challenge. I bet The Lego Group is seeing how fast the 41999 4x4 Crawler sells out before thinking of a suitable contest that would attract lots of entries.

Third Party Tires for Lego Technic Rims
DLuders replied to efferman's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling@ Rishab N: Those Team Losi 1.9 Mini Rock Crawler Tires will fit the Lego 44772 wheels just fine, since they fall within the recommended 37-48mm width range. They have an Outside Diameter of 3.78" (98mm) and a width of 1.48" (37.8mm). The price you found is SUPER LOW, so get a set! As stated on this Eurobricks post, 1nxtmonster used two pairs of Team Losi "1.9 Mini Rock Claw Tire, Blue (2)" on his Lego Technic , and discovered that they were VERY INEXPENSIVE on Amazon.com and fit on the standard Lego 44772 wheel. They normally sell for a lot more on the Team Losi website.

Review - 41999 4x4 Crawler Exclusive Edition
The Lego Group is a privately-held company, and it does not release its exact sales figures. The "limited edition" sets are an exception. Occasionally, TLG releases Annual Reports talking about general percentage of sales increases, but nothing specific. The owners are UBER RICH.

12V motor
DLuders replied to Good old Lego builder's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingHere is a ToysPeriod.com inventory of the Lego 880 Supplementary Set; Rebrickable has one too. BrickPicker.com says that the Lego 12V motor is worth USD $26. Maybe you can take the motor down to your local auto repair shop, where they could mark the shaft with a white mark and shine a Timing Strobe Light onto the rotating shaft to see how fast it turns....

Review - 41999 4x4 Crawler Exclusive Edition

Starting off in Technic (options: 8110, 9397, 42008, 42009)
DLuders replied to madjelly's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling@ madjelly: Since you are in the USA, you can no longer get the 8110 Unimog U400 set from Shop.Lego.com . The Lego Technic flagships like this typically only have a "run" of 2 years, so if you want to get one, don't delay. The prices from 3rd-party sellers are not getting any lower. Although it may be a tough way to start up with Lego Technic (due to the many parts and long building time), if you follow the instructions CLOSELY it should turn out OK for a first-timer.

Release Date Question for Servo, L-Motor & V2 IR
DLuders replied to 750ACE's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI telephoned Lego Customer Service yet again today, and talked with Kara ____ . She said that there is no specific release date for the Power Functions 88003 and 88004 motors; their release for individual sale keeps getting pushed back. When I tried to find out more about the "quality" issues with these motors, she didn't know specifics. I guess 1974 has had no luck getting answers either, so we'll have to wait even longer....

12V motor
DLuders replied to Good old Lego builder's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling@ Good old Lego builder: Could you look through Philo's LEGO 9V Technic Motors Compared Characteristics webpage, and tell us which motor you are talking about? Although most DO run at 12V, they are really rated for 9V.

LEGO Mindstorms and Robotics General Discussion
DLuders replied to Tkavan01's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingYesterday, Laurens Valk posted this about "LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 and NXT Compatibility". From the full Robot Square article, here is a summary:"Hardware Compatibility "The cable connectors in the NXT sets and EV3 sets are the same, so that many of the EV3 and NXT devices can be used together. Some combinations are compatible, others are not, as discussed in the next. You can see a demonstration of two possible configurations in the following video. "Most NXT accessories can be used with the EV3 brick You can connect all official LEGO NXT motors and official LEGO NXT sensors to the EV3 brick. For example, you can have a configuration with an NXT Touch Sensor, an EV3 Touch Sensor, an NXT motor and a Medium EV3 motor, all connected to the EV3 brick, as shown in Figure 4. You use the NXT devices in the EV3 software as if they are EV3 components, as demonstrated in the video. "You can also connect some unofficial NXT Sensors to the EV3 brick, such as some sensors from HiTechnic, Mindsensors and Dexter Industries. However, these companies will have to create programming blocks to facilitate the use of these sensors in the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 software, which has not yet been done for all sensors. If in doubt, contact the manufacturer of the sensor. "EV3 sensors CANNOT be used with the NXT brick, but EV3 motors CAN be used with the NXT "It is not possible to connect the new EV3 sensors to the NXT brick. However, you can use both Large and Medium EV3 motors with the NXT brick as if they are normal NXT motors. Figure 5 illustrates this (see video above for a sample program). "The NXT and EV3 rechargeable batteries are not compatible "Both the NXT and EV3 can be powered with 6 standard AA batteries. Alternatively, they can be powered with a LEGO rechargeable battery. The LEGO EV3 battery and LEGO NXT battery have a different shape, as shown in Figure 6, so you cannot use them interchangeably." [NOTE: In the Comments section in the article, John Hansen pointed out that "...the EV3 rechargeable battery had to differ from the NXT rechargeable battery because the battery compartment now has to have 2 mechanical latches (or a screw) due to toy safety regulations. But both batteries use the same DC charger."] "Software Compatibility "The EV3 brick is programmed with new programming software. Although the software is different than the NXT programming software, existing NXT users will recognize many of the features of the EV3 software. You can still program the robot’s actions using drag and drop programming blocks, as shown in Figure 7. "It is also possible to use the EV3 software to program your NXT bricks. If you have both NXT and EV3 bricks, this allows you to program both using just one application. Note that this does not give your NXT brick additional features. For example, you still cannot use EV3 sensors on the NXT brick. It just helps keeping all your programs in one place. The EV3 software (home edition) will be a free download from the LEGO MINDSTORMS website [Link not yet available], so you can use it even if you do not have an EV3 set."

Made a 4x4 Lego RC Car...without Power Functions!
DLuders replied to Crtlego's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling@ Crtlego: I like how you have integrated Lego Technic and Arduino -- that's what the MINDS-i System attempts to do with Lego-like components. Lego Mindstorms is meant to be a bridge between toys and realistic robotics, but it may not be as fun as directly "driving" your own creation! I would imagine your RC components don't have the range limitations that Lego Power Functions (PF) elements do, or the problems with infrared signal interference from the sun. Are the RC components significantly more expensive than comparable PF elements?
