42158 - NASA Mars Rover Perseverance
allanp replied to msk6003's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI don't think there is much to see on the inside, most of the steering and all of the suspension linkage is visible on the outside, so x-ray might not be as useful as it was with the Zetros. There's also no electronics with the set so it wouldn't be able to animate any internal mechanisms and have them match what's happening in the actual model like you could with the Zetros.

42157 - Skidder John Deere 948L-II
allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI think it's more likely that they are exactly 16M long, and the flip flop beams might only be pinned at one end.

allanp replied to msk6003's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingJust seen a back of the box image and apparently the model does have regular steering and turn on the spot steering.

allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingNice spot. Looks as though the flip flop beam may only be pinned at one end using a black friction pin, hard to tell for sure.

allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingMore pics available on Lego website Unfortunately they snuck in some LAs at the rear, and also the cam shaft style engine. Okay, so not everything can be perfect I guess, still very excited for this of course!!!

allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThat's why I said tied for second, it'll still be second but 8868 could go to third.

42157 - Skidder John Deere 948L-II
allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI meant the black thing at the other end. At the moment it's tied for second (with 8868) for most pneumatic cylinders in a set with 5.

allanp replied to msk6003's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingLooks pretty good. It doesn't appear to have different steering modes which would have been nice to have. But the rocker bogie suspension looks good and accurate and nice to get recolours of some frames and large turntable in white. It might not be an 8480 but I got a mad nostalgia rush seeing the white turntable as it really reminded me of seeing the first pictures of 8480 in early 96, and spotting the black turntable (first time a turntable was anything other than grey IIRC).

allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI love it!! At least 5 11x2 pneumatics colour matched to their location, 3x19 frames, some new A-frames, Daytona diffs (likely two of them if 4 wheel drive, think I can see the pinion gear for a rear diff) don't need them with their small gear reduction but looks much better than the bright red ones in this instance), and also love the regular green colour. Yup, gonna get straight away. Unless I'm missing something obvious I wonder what the yellow pins are, used to mount the rubber parts to the claws? I also wonder how the ripper thing is actuated. Hopefully there's another pneumatic in there . The articulated joint looks fairy solid with the 3x19 frames sandwiched between two large turntables. EDIT: I was missing something kinda obvious, those are not some new yellow pin but actually look like axle holes with a red 2M axle.

allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingIgnoring the rumored price for a moment....The set looks good and I like the configuration. It does look way too out of proportion but that should be easy enough to fix with the new boom pieces, and the functions and new pieces appear to have remained intact, which for me is the important thing. I just hope the rumored price is way off. Even if I don't spend the extra cash to make the proportions more accurate, the price seems way too high. The image is preliminary but I think it's accurate to the final model because it definitely looks like it was originally supposed to be much taller. "look how they butchered my boy" indeed. As for a contest to build a better crane using the talented builders here, the TLG designers are pretty darned talented! It's not a question of talent. It's marketing, costs, safety, and all these other things we don't need to worry about. Do I agree with "butchering" the set like this whilst still keeping the price sky high? No! But it is what it is (I hate that saying but it is what it.....dang it!). Still withholding final judgement till we KNOW FOR SURE the final RRP, and have had a better look and it's functions and how well they have been replicated as compared to the real thing. I don't know if the air bus now counts as the 2022 flagship of if 2022 didn't have a flagship, but discounting that set, I haven't bought a flagship in almost 3 years now. As a huge Technic fan of over 30 years with disposable income I want this set to change that, I want to like it, I'm trying to like it, price please don't be ridiculous!

allanp replied to grohl's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingIt's amazing how you got the feel and essence of the source material given you were limited to a single set, and it looks as though you used most of the pieces from the helicopter. Front-paged.

Grohl's Creations
allanp replied to grohl's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingThis would have been featured on the front page of Eurobricks but I think I can only feature the whole topic (and it's first page) and not a select post. But if I could have front paged it I would have, great work

Regarding clone brands, you'll have to check with forum moderators such as @Jim first (I am not a moderator). I wouldn't think they are allowed in a forum topic discussing a Lego set.

Generic Contest Discussion
I could be very wrong here, so apologies in advance if I annoy someone, but I get an overall sense that there has been a bit less enthusiasm for this current contest. And honestly, if that is true, I think it might be because of the topic of the contest being space vehicles. The main function of a space vehicle is space flight, something we can't replicate in Technic, so contestants are left with landing gear and in some cases some very creative new functions. But not even TLG themselves have been able to make Technic Starwars popular. 8480 took multiple TLG designers a long time and around 80 prototypes to develope. But of course, this is all thinking in hindsight, it never crossed my mind before the contest started, and with so many great contest topics in the past and I'm sure the future as well, I mean, every great band has a not so great album! Maybe something to bare in mind for future contests, to make them more accessible and with a view to how engaging the final entries might be. I wonder if a 12 week time frame might also be an option depending on the contest topic. With this in mind, I should probably rethink my own previous suggestion of a "build a universal set" contest. It's hard enough to build one model in the time frame let alone 4 from the same pile of elements, so might not be the best idea from an accessibility stand point, though might make for a more interesting selection of entries. Maybe I should suggest a "build a theme park ride" contest instead And purely for accessibility reasons, I probably wouldn't want digital entries to be a requirement. A simple size limit and pictures of the interesting internals from the already required WIP topics would be easier to stick to. For models with a limit of 200 parts or less, like the mini contest, a picture of the pieces laid out nice and neatly might also be an option to revisit.

[REVIEW] 42128 - Heavy-duty Tow Truck
Welcome to the forum. Many trucks designed to tow smaller vehicles have the loops to hold the wheels, but many much larger trucks, designed to tow other much larger trucks, don't. But as the piece used for the cross bar has a few holes in all directions it should be fairly easy to add the hoops if you want them.

42156 - Peugeot 9X8 Hypercar
allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI like it, for a 1:10 scale car I think the suspension is okay, and at least it's slightly different to all the other cars. Adding the front wheel drive to the fake motor is a welcome addition also, and yay for working steering wheel!! If it was a 1:8 car I'd be dissatisfied with it but for a 1:10 scale it's pretty good.

Generic Contest Discussion
I would trust the members to show an accurate pile of leftover pieces. The "rule" for leftover pieces would be that voters will be more likely to vote for you if your leftover piles are small. If you show the model with the leftover pieces together on a scale, the weight should be identical for all four, but then not everyone has digital gram resolution scales. Eh, it's an idea for when you're running out of ideas .

Generic Contest Discussion
Just another random idea for the pot (after the shrinking contest), how about a universal set contest? Rules would be: 1) Build 4 different models from the same parts. 2) Each model must be entirely different (not 4 cars for example) 3) Priority is on the mechanical rather than outward appearance but it's better if it looks cool! 4) Must have a theme, for example every set has a motor/battery box or pneumatics or just purely gears/linkages 5) Remakes of old universal sets are allowed but voters might penalize you for lack of creativity. 6) Studless and studfull both allowed.

42146 - Liebherr LR13000
allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingYeah I'm thinking of the counterweights, likely 2 hubs and large truss pieces, and also the price, as price per kg is more accurate than price per part, I'm thinking that an expensive set also means a heavy set, even more so if the weight is inflated with counterweights. It will be interesting to see how price per kg is affected by counterweights.

allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingI'm not so sure, only a guess but even at 1 - 1.5 meters I feel like the 5 wide tracks would be in scale but that's only a guess. I also wonder if the off-centre ridge on the cat d11 tracks would lead to clunky operation under very heavy loads. I have a feeling that the crane will be at least 50% heavier than the cat, maybe even double the weight, without it's 500g Payload, with a smaller area in contact with the ground.

What size tubing for lego pneumatics
allanp replied to technicboi's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingIt's smaller than that, about 1.5 to 2mm. I've bought some replacement tubing from http://www.blokbricks.com/contents/en-us/d2.html in the past, very good stuff. Can buy long lengths in a variety of colours if needed.

Pneumatics General Discussion
allanp replied to 9v system's post in a topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale ModelingIt is quite wobbly, not as rigid as the normal cylinders because there is no top seal.
