This double track train trestle is finally finished! The bridge uses four girder parts from City set 7900 from 2006 that I've had laying around for 18 years without much luck at making a bridge (despite several attempts) - until now! The bridge is ~30 inches long, and is designed to hang between two tables with the parts under track off the end of the bridge proper serving as feet, holding the bridge level and on the table top. Looking up track through the centerline of the bridge. There are 16 bricks of space from top of the rail to the roof girders, which means it can take double-stack Maersk container cars with a plate to spare. To pick the bridge up, you can grab anywhere but the roof lattice - those plates aren't reinforced enough to take the weight. The underside has been reinforced since the initial design stage... It's a lot stronger now, and *should* be able to hang between two tables without breaking while trains run over it. (I've not been able to test this with motorized trains as I don't own any.) Thoughts, comments, questions? Feedback is appreciated! EDIT 7/6/24: Please pardon my messy layout! I've really got nowhere to go with most of this stuff, but nevertheless I just managed to rearrange it around, moving tables and adding my bridge to the mix. The bridge works beautifully and hasn't collapsed yet which I consider a major win for my design skills! A digital look at what the layout looks like without the stuff in the way. -
This truss bridge's design was started a decade ago when I received CITY set 7900 (Heavy Loader) for Christmas 2006. I loved the truss part's Technic-y design, but it didn't work with my original black and red trains, so I shelved the parts, hoping that someday reality would catch up with my dreams. After about 4 years, I designed a workable bridge using most of the parts of Bionicle set 8995 (Thornatus V9) which was purchased for the parts alone in 2010. It looked bad and wasn't tall enough for most of my trains, so I tore it apart in 2012. (you can see it in the LDD screenshot above) I kept sitting on the idea for another year and a half until 2014, when I designed this current bridge. This bridge was just finished in Real Life yesterday due to constantly tweaking the design and perpetually fearing it wouldn't work right. The model is five tracks long, but the bridge itself is four tracks. The reason for the extra track is to give the engines preparing to cross the bridge room to straighten out from curves / switches. I still have another two pieces of flex track (not shown) before the bridge as well for evening five tracks out to six.... it makes layout planning so much easier when (mostly) everything is in even numbers of track. The model is not able to be doubled up to make a two track wide bridge without significant modifications. The model can fit 8 studs wide trains with ease, and is tall enough to let all my trains (and most, if not all, of the official sets) through. The bridge is even strong enough to be carried by the top grid-work, as long as you don't swing it around / slam it down hard. This is a build I have been wanting to do for a while, and thought I'd share with you guys on the forum. In this build I'll be combining one of my favourite sets with one of my least favourite sets. The 7900 heavy loader set is one of my favourite sets of all time. I love the cab-over design and the three axle chassis, and although its big, I think it looks perfectly proportional for what it is, and hasn't dated as much as other sets I own from the same release year. The truck looks awesome and beefy on its own, but the bridge that came with the set is too large to be sitting on the back of it all the time, and without a trailer or implement to tow it isn't of much use. There are no other semi-trailers that are compatible with the truck, and any custom trailer or implement that I've made has doubled up on what I own already. In this build I will be combining the 7900 heavy loader with the 60060 auto transporter, one of my most hated sets. I'll be making a new dual-axle chassis for the semi-truck and putting the car transportation bed on the back. I've already tried a test fit of the parts and it looks great. The 60060 auto transporter is very minimalist, and looks silly when it isn't trucking anything around my town. The proportions are just wrong, and with such a small puny cabin, anything that I pose on the back that's wider than 4 studs looks silly. The 7900 cabin would be a nice touch, and allow me to pose some bigger vehicles on the back without it looking dumb.
