They still had about 5 miles to go before they reached Beleriand and were determined to get there that night. Before leaving Kaliphlin, Valanice had written her Uncle to let him know when to expect her and that she was bringing visitors. Riders from the Earl met them on the road just as the last traces of daylight were slipping away. He had grown worried that his niece had not arrived when planned and had sent out some of his men to see if Valanice had run into any trouble. He had heard about the recent Drow attacks all throughout Avalonia and had even had to help some of the neighboring Earl’s deal with some of their own attacks. They road into the Earl’s fortress with a clatter of hooves and the clank of a barred and locked gate behind them. The Earl was there to greet them as they dismounted by the stables. “Uncle Richard!” proclaimed Valanice, “I’m so glad we made it safely!” “Yes, I was quiet worried about you.” responded Richard, “Since you left the situation throughout Avalonia has grown more dangerous than you can imagine. I tried to send riders to meet you at the Kaliphlin border, but something happened to them and I fear the worst for their fate.” “It seems we have much to catch up on, but first, allow me to introduce the three sons of Graham who have escorted me from Kaliphlin: Wyndor, Natolyth, and Chalin” said Valanice. “I have much to thank you for sons of Graham,” stated Richard. “I have no daughters of my own you see, so Valanice is like the daughter I never had. I am very thankful for the protection you have provided her. And now you must rest, I have much to tell my niece.” “Uh, Sir Earl, sir,” Wyndor started to say. “No, there is no need for more words tonight. We will talk more in the morning” responded Richard. With that he whisked Valanice away and motioned for some servants to show the brothers to their room. Valanice looked over her shoulder at Wyndor and mouthed: “We’ll talk later.” Wyndor had no other choice but to follow the servants. When they got to their room Chalin and Natolyth went straight to bed, barely even bothering to take off their boots they were so tired from the battle that morning. Wyndor, on the other hand, stayed up sitting at the window watching the shadows. He could see a corner of a window of the great room where he assumed Richard and Valanice were discussing the events of the past week. Eventually he nodded off. He woke up early the next morning to find Richard standing over his bed. “Let’s go for a walk, you and I,” he told Wyndor. They walked around the inner perimeter of the wall surrounding the manor and a few other buildings that served as the Earl’s estate. “How’s Valanice?” Wyndor asked trying to start some conversation. “She is exhausted from the journey and a late night discussion about why I should let you marry her” Richard responded abruptly. “Well, I was hoping to ask for your permission first, but, well, you see…” Wyndor started. “But real life got in the way” responded Richard. “I do understand how that can happen you know. I’m not one to shoot a crossbow bolt at every man who comes to the doorstep.” “Well that’s a relief” said Wyndor. “So why don’t you tell me why you love my niece?” stated Richard. They had ended up on one of the elevated walkways that ran across various parts of the estate. Wyndor spent the next hour going into detail about why he loved Valanice and how he planned to care for her. Richard was impressed with Wyndor’s passion, but more than that, he was impressed with how much Wyndor had thought through all the details for caring for Valanice. “Wyndor,” started Richard, “I can tell that you will take care of my niece and I can give the two of you my blessing. But, you must promise me one thing.” “What’s that?” asked Wyndor. “You must take Valanice away from Avalonia as quickly as possible. I’m afraid that the Drow you met on the road yesterday are just the first of many to attack these lands. I have been reinforcing the defenses of Beleriand and my manor, but it may not be enough. I fear for the safety of my people and I do not want to have to fear for hers also” said Richard. “If Valanice agrees, we can have the ceremony today and you can leave first thing in the morning for Mitgardia.” “You have my word that I will put her life before mine, always” stated Wyndor. The rest of the morning was spent making plans and that afternoon Wyndor and Valanice were married. Their witnesses were Wyndor’s two brothers and Richard’s honor guard. It was a simple ceremony which Richard oversaw himself. Never before in Historica had there been two people happier to be together that day than Wyndor and Valanice.
