  1. An improved version of my ice dragon model from December last year. This one is stronger, using mixed joints and the wings are further forward. In my opinion it look a lot better then the original one, which can be seen here- https://www.flickr.c...ve/23381215452/ . This was part of my display for the Sydney Brick Show (16th & 17th of April).
  2. Hey there, this is the chosen Minifigure with a big topic: The value of the lego castle sets. Not PPP value, no. Fun value, moc value, and Minifigure value. Let's hypothetically say that I have NO castle, fantasy, Viking or other medival sets of any kind. I wish to get into the theme, already loving some other themes. I get to the store, with enough money for any of the sets, but I only want to buy one. Which set should I get, with the best Minifigure/fun value? Or, say I'm a moccer. Which set would be best? Lastly, on a personal note, Dragon mountain or Kings castle?
  3. I love How to Train Your Dragon so much I had to make an animation. It gave me a chance to test out my motion control rig.
  4. After a long building hiatus, I've finally had a chance to hit the bricks! Even though I never saw the movie in theaters, I have become a big fan of "How to Train Your Dragon" over the last year (largely due to John Powell's superb soundtrack, but no need to talk about that here). In anticipation of the sequel which will be released this summer, I decided to take on the challenge of building an accurate minifig-scale Toothless. Here are the results! Front View: Hiccup and Toothless in Lego form! Toothless' ears, legs, wings, and tail can all be adjusted. His mouth can open too, but it's not an intentional feature. Side View: One difficulty with building a fairly small and specific dragon is its stability. To keep both dragon and rider in place, I used two rubber bands. The lower rubber band keeps Hiccup's torso in place while the upper rubber band keeps Toothless' head upright. Close-up: When building, I first started with Toothless' head, which proved to be the most difficult part. I wanted to recreate the unique shape of his head, while still incorporating his reptilian eyes and expressive ear-flaps. Even if it's not perfect, I'm definitely pleased with the result! As a fortunate coincidence, Hiccup's pedals align perfectly with Toothless' legs, which is movie-accurate. Flying Mode: The wings I used in the first few photos were much more easy to position, but were too small compared to Toothless' actual wing size. Thus, I made it possible to switch them out for a pair of Dino Attack wings for a more accurate flying mode. For a few more pictures and higher resolution versions of the photos here, check out the Flickr set. I would be delighted to hear your feedback, seeing as my rendition is far from perfect. Thanks for looking! Inky
  5. Kreo, the Hasbro-owned clone brand, has recently released a Dungeons & Dragons line in the US (and Canada?). As a fan of fantasy, I'm excited by this development. I wish, of course, that D&D had been released by TLG, but as Hasbro owns D&D, there was no chance of that ever happening. From the pictures I have seen online, there are good and bad aspects to the Kreo D&D line. On the positive side, it does mean that there will be some reasonable quality parts that are compatible with LEGO but that TLG don't/can't make. It also appears that a lot of the Kreo D&D minifigs (i.e. kreons) will be available individually or in small packs, so you won't have to pay a premium on Ebay to get them because they've been parted from larger sets. Of particular interest are the Drizzt and Eye of Grumsh kreons which I fully intend to cannibalize for their parts. On the negative side, I'm not a fan of kreons. Yes, they're more articulated than LEGO minifigs, but they're also butt ugly. I'm also disappointed that almost all of the creatures are humanoid. Of all the varied monsters D&D has produced/redefined in its 40 year history, Kreo has decided that their D&D line should be almost exclusively humanoid. The only exceptions are some spiders and a mimic. You would think that in a line called Dungeons & Dragons, that there would be at least one dragon, but there isn't. Still, I hope this line reaches the UK where I am soon. I haven't been able to find a UK release date yet. Do you have any intel on its UK release? From what I have seen of other Kreo lines, it can take up to a year between a US and UK release. What are your thoughts about Kreo's D&D line? Note to mods: Please feel free to merge this post with an existing thread if appropriate. I just thought that as it deals specifically with D&D, it merited its own discussion.
  6. High in the mountains of Southern Mitgardia, master smiths have secretly used the raging fire of dragons to fuel their craft. The Great Red, Taevoth Longtail, fled Nocturnus generations ago during a purge on his kind. Now he helps create swords because it beats being spitted and eaten by werewolves or worse. The smiths of the Dragon Forge are a mix of human and dwarf, often training as a pair: master and student, only to pass on their secrets to the next generation when the time comes. Few know the hidden location of the Dragon Forge, and fewer still carry the incredible weapons that are made here. Only the finest hammered iron blades can be treated with the coals heated by dragon-flame. Through the heating process, the dragon-flame is bound to the metal, where it imbues a magical sheen that never dulls. A finished sword, called a Firebrand, is always warm to the touch and crafted with fine inlays and ornate hilts. The blades are made long, after the zweihander style favored by the knights and armsmen of the Crown Lands. In the past, these weapons were specially ordered by only the richest and most famous warriors in Historica. However, the time may be coming when need for the Firebrands, as more than status symbols and tokens of martial mastery, is great.
