  1. Weird things are happening throughout Historica. Among these are that creatures which normally avoid the heat of Kaliphlin have been sighted in the desert sands. This worm actually looks like a being of the Frozen Beyond, north of Mitgardia! There must surely be some strange and ancient magic at work to make this happen... Run for your life!! The cold mouth of the beast. The entire build. I'd also like to claim a UoP credit for brick-built animal #1 [Agriculture and Zoology].
  2. A collab with my brother, Isaac (soccerkid6), it was built for the Inn category of the CCC. The inn features a full interior via pull out rooms. The Red Feather Inn is a prominent tavern located just outside of Katoren. Several years ago a room was added on to serve as the store room/kitchen and allow for more space in the dining room. It's rumored to be under the guardianship of a powerful genie, which two thieves are just now finding to be true... The pull out rooms: There's lots of detail packed in, so check out more pictures here: link Thanks for looking, C&C welcome
  3. Merchants Street, Barqa was a bustling street full of traders, merchants and hawkers. Now, after the civil war the street is comparatively lifeless, with few customers. Many stores are slowly declining and some of the very smallest have closed for the immediate future, their proprietors and staff picking up what work they can elsewhere. The few exceptions to this are the purveyors of food, clothing and weapons. The arms trade however is now beginning to go into a decline now the civil war is ended, most of there trade is now with rich travellers from other guilds. This portion of the street contains the Merchants Hall, an Arms and Armour retailer and a purveyor of clothing. Thanks to Gideon for allowing me to build in his city.
  4. The Barqa merchants hall is a hub for the rich (and not particularly famous) merchants and traders of Kaliphlin, who still remain prosperous after the disastrous civil war. Also an entry into the CCC XIII.
  5. I actually built this a month or two ago, but just realized I hadn't posted it here yet. Aymeri grew up as a desert nomad, traveling the deserts of Kaliphlin with his parents, Darrid, and Auriol. Their tribe often stopped at different oasis' to resupply their water and take care of the animals. The men stand guard, and set up camp while children help water the livestock, and the women tend to the babies. Aymeri: Lots more pics here: Link C&C welcome
  6. Despite the ravages of the civil war, there are a few secluded nooks where it is still possible to lead a peaceful life. C&C welcome as always!
  7. Adair

    Fate

A free-build for the Guilds of Historica and a continuation of the story of Adira Magdeburg. Please check here: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=117072 and the ones before it for backstory. This is also a cross-over with gedren_y, so please go check out his fantastic builds! Long Live the Kaliphlin and the High Council! The humid climate of the Nestlands was usually not very appealing to most Kaliphlinians, but to Adira it felt like heaven. The freedom this land brought her people was worth a thousand discomforts, though her own mind remained trapped in anger. And after the frigid cold of the mountain path behind her, the warm weather wasn't so bad. The people of Estolad weren't the only ones who had fled to the Nestlands, apparently. A large population of refugees already existed on the southern face of the mountain of Edst Nol where the people of the Nestlands had prepared housing for an occupation that never came. They, for the most part, gladly welcomed the refugees, among them, meeting them on the path coming down from the pass with blankets and food. Adira wandered among them, trying to help, but for the most part being ignored. She refused to show any emotion except concern, but on the inside her anger and hurt did nothing but fester and grow. What have I but the love and trust of my people? If they do not trust me, what reason have I yet to live? Yet the answer always came back with equal resonance, cold and ruthless. Revenge. The Desert King has taken everything from me, even my two most trusted friends. I will hunt down Sirhan until there is no place left for him to hide. Then I will kill him. The sound of someone standing silently behind her reached Adira's ear but she refused respond. She did not, however, walk away. Let them bring their complaints somewhere else, I no longer govern this people. I am a useless appendage. “Lady Magdeburg. I have heard of your loss, and bring you the condolence of my people. Please except any help we can give you and your people.” The voice had a slight Nestlands accent, but was still recognizable. Adira had met the Nestlands Minister of External Affairs Aturl Prndrn when she was first deployed in the Nestlands as a Guerrilla not even a year ago. “There is nothing you, or anyone can do.” She turned. “But thank you none the less.” Aturl nodded slowly. “If there is nothing to be done, then what does the Lady of Estolad plan to do?” Adira smiled sardonically at the title. “Bring my enemies down with me.” “A noble aspiration. And this will heal you?” The Minister asked. Adira paused, considering. Finally she spoke. “A shattered vase can not be mended, but it can stab the one who broke it.” Aturl was silent for some seconds. “I wish I could go with you, but since I am tied down here I will help you all I can. Tell us what weapons, disguises, and food you will need, and we will supply them as best we can. And when you wish for solace, come to the Nestlands. Perhaps your people will have you back.” To be continued... The build. Those on Flickr saw this several months ago, but I finally have been able to use it in GoH! Yay.... Also, please check out Gedren's builds: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showuser=14064 Expect my next post in roughly a week or two (most likely the latter). Soli Deo Gloria & Sola Gracia!
  8. A free-build for the Guilds of Historica and a continuation of the story of Adira Magdeburg. Please check here: http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=116423 and the ones before it for backstory. You are a coward. You can not even die honorably. You ran from death! The words played over and over in Adira's mind, forming a cadence with the pounding of her feet on the rough mountain path. The wind bit into her, but that pain was trifling in comparison to the bitter pain of these words. After all, what had she ever lived for but courage and honor? And now she was running like a frightened hare, running as much from her defeat as from the death or torture that awaited her back in the valley. Finally her legs would carry her no farther and she halted, leaning on one of the numerous pine trees along the road. People passed her by, making for the pass to the Nestlands, but none of them made eye contact. They knew she had failed them. They knew she continued to fail them. But Adira did not care anymore. She had no pride left to protect. She was bled dry. Slowly she removed her cumbersome outer armor and laid it at the side of the road. It was of Mitgardian make, some family heirloom. As soon as she took it off she felt refreshed, no longer protected, but at least free to move around as she was used to. “Lady Magdeburg.” Adira tensed. She knew what she would see when she turned, but she did not want to face it. Why can't he just leave me alone, like everyone else? Slowly she turned and stared at Havers defiantly. “What is it, Captain Havers?” Havers returned her stare levelly. “There are still people in the town down there. We must do what we can to rescue them.” Adira sighed. “The town is lost. They will die there or in the mountains.” “That is NOT true!” Havers' voice was emphatic, almost desperate. Adira took a step back from the fury in his eyes. “Some might escape! What can we do but try?” Adira studied him coldly. “Who is it that you can not find?” Havers glared at her, groping for words. “Me Lady!” Adira spun around, her face red from her altercation. What she saw didn't please her. Adelwight, occupationally a goat-herder and a member of the town Council, stood on the path, armed with a heavy battle-ax and flanked by two young men similarly armed. Behind him stood a square, thatched, and carved log house that she now realized must belong to him. He had been the last deciding vote in making her ruler of Estolad, but he had been very hesitant. Now he would speak of her failure, and probably not in pleasant terms. The man's eyes were grim. “Where are me and me sons needed most?” Adira was taken aback by the question, but quickly regained her composure. “Wherever you most wish to die.” Adelwight let out a laugh that sounded almost like a bray. “That'll be right here, next to th' home of me fathers, and right where the flea-bitten varmints can find us!” It took a moment for Adira to understand what she was hearing. This man is staying here to die when he could probably escape with his family. Why? No. She refused to think of the answer. Instead she posed an indirect question. “What of your young ones? Who will take care of them?” The man's old but fierce eyes turned on her, and she saw immediately that he knew what her true question was. “Me Lady, courage has nothin' to do with charging into the middle of a fray, and all to do with standing where ye have always stood, even to death. We're doing this for our land, every tree, every hillock,” he paused, looking strait at Adira, “every person.” The patriarch leaned on his ax, staring out over the valley. “Ye still have a life to live, a people to lead. Protect me bairns, and all th' people of Estolad that go through that pass.” There was nothing Adira could say. These men were giving up their lives for a town who had spurned their council, and practically invited the enemy to their doorstep. They were giving their lives for her. A tear sprang from Adira's eye. Slowly she started up the path. She noticed that Havers was no longer behind her, but she did not care. Let him kill himself down there. If there was anyone left in that town they would be Desert King prisoners by now, but these few survivors still had a chance. She could help them. To be continued... The build. This build is approximately three months old by now, so most of you might have seen it on Flickr by now. I hope the story made it worth it, however. Back in the middle of the summer I decided I wanted to try something more Mitgardian (surprise surprise) so I made this. This also was posted for the Colossal Battle Contest on Flickr and brought to our County fair, where it won a meaningless little first prize sticker (along with half of the other open class entries. ). I hope to post the next installment, a crossover with Gedren, sometime this month. Soli Deo Gloria & Sola Gracia!
  9. Below is a transcript of Ageven's speech on the occasion: “Fellow Kaliphlinians! Our country has been decimated. War has torn its lands and harried its people. The Desert King has hit hard with his merciless fist. The only hope of survival seems to lie in quiet submission. Many act as if resistance would be suicidal. “Are you a brave people? Or will you sit in your cushioned ivory palaces in Petraea and watch your liberties be swept away and only a few meager handouts be given you in return? Will you shut yourselves up in your narrow castles and ignore the pleas of your few countrymen who continue to hold out for freedom? Will you bury your heads in the remotest sands and congratulate yourself that whoever else falls, you are safe? You are not safe! I tell you, you are not safe! The tyrant pretends amnesty, he offers bribes, he whispers sweet promises. He only wishes to rout out a few pestilent trouble makers – then a glorious reign will be ushered in under which prosperity will flood – what? Whom? Not the average person, not the hard working merchants, not the careful barons – the beggarly flatterers, the court gossips, those who know how to further their own interests by smoothly buttering up the disentombed mummy that pretends to lead us! “And for the rest of us? What is left? A land ruined, a country shattered, a world that is falling apart. The worst brutally push their way to the top, and we – are we willing to stand by and see a corrupt monarchy lord it over us and our children? “Does it matter if we are willing? Is not hope gone? Are not things so far advanced that there is no possibility of stemming the tide? “Fellow Kaliphlinians, so far I have come with a message of despair. Now I point to our only terrestrial hope! Stand up, brave men of the south! Stand up, you barons that for so long have held onto your right to govern yourselves in lawful council! Stand up, you merchants to whom the right to traffic freely is literally food and drink! Stand up, Kaliphlinians all! “Let not party names distract us. The land of the south is one. If we do not hang together, be assured we shall all hang separately. Ulandian or High Councillors, we fall or stand – as Kaliphlinians!” A roar of applause followed the outburst, and then Ageven cried out, “Sultan’s Gate must be sacked!” Note that the highly political tone is reflective of Ageven’s in character sentiments. I personally, of course, know that the nominal rule of the DK in Kaliphlin is irrelevant… at least, more or less, except in so far as it attracts/repulses members. Had fun getting a few good quotes in there. Finally got around to building this! I believe it's the first time I used that floor technique - quite tile intensive but it looks pretty good! Thanks for checking the MOC out!
  10. The next installment of my Tales of the Past series! Parts One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, and Seven, for those who are curious. Part Eight is below. Justice! The plea rang in Kalaflar’s ears. He stood bareheaded before the grave. First his uncle – then Gascoyne – now his adopted father – who was this black knight, that he hunted him and all he loved down with such relentless persistence? Kalaflar’s eyes narrowed, his lips tightened. Whoever he was, he must be found – caught – brought to justice! With the force of his resolve he swung around and the gravel spurted out from under his feet as he strode off to make his way in the world once again. Overview: I know the last two have been pretty small, but hopefully I can step up the size for the next part of this story! I did enjoy using my olive and dark green for this one though. Comments are welcome!
  11. A mystical magician approaching the solitary spire he calls home, to study the stars, read his books, and do magic stuff! Greatly inspired by the fabulous artworks of Péah. Normally I try build original completely compositions, but when I saw his work I just had to build it, it's so beautiful, and I'd love to build more of it! peahart.tumblr.com/ This is my main exhibit for the upcoming Auckland Brick show this weekend and Brickcon-NZ the following weekend, been tinkering with it for several months now, it was worth doing well I think :) unfortunately some bricks cough*lugbulk*cough haven't yet arrived which I would have loved to use, but you can't have everything can you? was a very fun build with some cool techniques and (what I think) is an awesome colourscheme, the ground is flesh and those accents are light and warm yellowish orange, I think? I finally found a use for all that medium azure i accidentally bought last year! :D Enjoy everyone! David www.facebook.com/davidhenselLego
  12. Previous Chapter: The Aegis Council --- Next Chapter: The Burnt Roads (Warning, this chapter is LONG) Ansriff had met Voraal at the tavern and led him deep into the forest. "Yes, she's deep within the woods. Apparently, i've met her before." Ansriff said. "What? Where?" Voraal inquired. "It was back on one of my patrols, Avdar and i were on lookout for drows, but what we found was much worse. A pyromancer had been torturing a little girl, searing her skin with fire. Avdar snook up behind the maniac and sheathed his sword right in the pyro's throat. I then went to wrap up the injured girl in my cloak, and we brought her back to Vanhorn to heal her. But before we left the area, the pyromancer's staff sent some weird red aura into the girl. I spoke naught of it to Avdar, for i feared for the girl." Ansriff explained. "What's her name?" Voraal asked. "Temari, she called herself." Voraal nodded to Ansriff. "Thank you, here's your silver." he handed a heavy sack of coins to Ansriff. He refused. "No thank you. Take as a favor from a friend. Besides, i never got you a birth day present in the last ten years." Ansriff said. Voraal smirked, and walked up to a small paved area with a thin dark figure standing in the middle, chanting what sounded to Voraal gibberish. He coughed politely, and Temari jerked herself to turn to Voraal. "H...hello." Voraal said nervously. Temari brushed her hair away from her face. "What are you doing here?" "I came to find you." Voraal said. Temari narrowed her eyes. "Who sent you?" she asked. "Myself." Voraal replied, with a glint in his eye. "Why did you come to find me?" Voraal stood idle for a moment. "Because, i found beauty in you, despite your dark magic. "I am a pyromancer, not a sorceress. But, i thank you for your loving thought." she said. "I know how you received your flame." Voraal said. "How?!" Temari exclaimed. "One of my Ranger friends found you, after being tortured by a pyromancer, and they took you back to the city." Voraal said. "Oh, Ansriff. He was like a father to me, until i ran away out of anxiety. I learned to live with my curse, the curse of the flame." she said. "Together, i can help you heal this curse." Voraal stepped closer. "Would you? After you saw that i served Axtrous? He killed the tribal elf." Temari remarked. "Yes. I have no care for those elves." Voraal replied. Temari stepped a bit closer, and held Voraal's right hand with her left. The road was long to Kaliphlin, but Voraal and Temari made a great distance. Temari's home was in the Siccus Badlands. She lived in a large cave where she practiced her pyro magic. Together they would live in peace in Kaliphlin. --- Hey guys, sorry if any of you thought this was a long chapter. I just wanted to push Voraal out of Aeldric's story as fast as possible, as Aeldric will be recruiting new rangers in the following months. C & C welcome.
  13. Down on the coast of southern Kaliphlin temperatures are perfect for growing grapes, and thanks to how out-of-the-way the spot is, it has been left relatively untouched by the civil war that tore the rest of the guild apart. Since Ageven's home town isn't too far away, he payed the owner of one of the largest vinyards in the sector a visit, and convinced him to ship a few much-desired loads of grapes into the interior of Kaliphlin. Picking grapes in the hot sun can be hot work! As the grapes are picked, sorted, and packed, they're being loaded onto carts for transportation. The wealthy owner has a fairly elaborate country mansion on the site. From the elevated second story Ageven and he can get a good view of the operations! I've been wanting to build one of these for quite a while and Soccerkid's contest was the perfect opportunity! I really enjoyed the vine part even though it got a bit tedious. Quite please with how it turned out on the whole although I do think the pictures could be better (but I always think that!). Also, I now have a lot more respect for those of you who do crazy roofs. That corner took me foreeeever! Comments and criticism are welcome! Thanks for looking!
  14. The agriculture of Kaliphlin is heavily dependent on irrigation. During the Civil War, many parts of this infrastructure was damaged. Since the cessation of hostilities, the City Council of Barqa has sponsored a rebuilding campaign of the irrigation canals in the Arkbri valley. Now finally again fresh water from the river can be diverted to the fields of the bread-basket of western Kaliphlin. Lord Gideon is inspecting the results of the repair works and rejoices when seeing that the fields are lush once more. A farmer adjusts the water flow to his fields, while his son is minding the goats on the other side of the canal. I'd also like to claim the following UoP credits: Countryside scene [Anthropology] Crop farming [Agriculture and Zoology]
  15. Just over a year since I first joined GoH I finally have a more detailed character backstory! As a boy Parimere grew up in the Ansfel border post (were his father was garrisoned) situated between Kaliphlin and Avalonia. During his late teens he journeyed with his father through three of the four guilds- Avalonia, Mitguardia and Kaliphlin, (his fathers diplomatic work never took him to the guild of Nocturnus). Following the passing of his father he was left with a choice, since he had spent most of his life in either Kaliphlin or Avalonia, he was left with a hard choice, the guild of trees or the one of deserts? In the end he chose Kaliphlin in the south as his home In the years that followed he became a lord of Kaliphlin, frequently wandering through the guild, especially near the coast and occasionally abroad. And that is the tale of Lord Parimere of Kaliphlin.
  16. I've had this built for a while now, but keep forgetting to post it. Aymeri and his men trek across the desert back to Katoren. C&C welcome
  17. Some more Photoshop work! Desert Patrol by Henry Alekna, on Flickr Edit: scroll down to post #9 for a new one!
  18. Throughout the many wild islands and tropical jungles of Kaliphlin there are many unique beasts and creatures. There are many rumors and legends about ancient, gigantic beast that once ruled the lands eons ago until they were struck down by a great ball of fire falling from the heavens. However some say that the ancestors of these great beasts still live on, secluded from the rest of the world on one of the many small islands off the coast of Kaliphlin. Now, after years of searching, explorers from the University of Petrea have discovered these magnificent creatures and proved beyond a doubt the truth behind the old stories... This build started off as an attempt to build a dragon in the style of the ones from How to Train Your Dragon ( colorful, animated looking, etc) but it ended up as a dino instead. C and C appreciated.
  19. Recently discovered in an almost forgotten corner of Petraea university, this painting by the yet unknown artist 'BC'. See Flickr (link in signature) for images without frame and background. I would like to claim the UoP credits for: Trees (1/3), Studs up rocks and cliffs.
  20. Built for the Summer Joust, Guild category, Team Kaliphlin. And also a free build! After the civil war in Kaliphlin ended in stalemate, the main concerns of it's leaders turned to how to rebuild their shattered economy. Marauding armies had raided and decimated farms throughout the land, leading to widespead hunger and deprivation. Peregrinus had fared somewhat better than it's neighbouring provinces, as most of it's battles had been fought against Ulandis on the sea. Although not blessed with much arable land, the locals have made do by cutting into the hillsides, creating terraces where produce can be grown. Soldiers from both sides of the conflict have found ready work on the land, finding a new common purpose after the exhaustion of war. Here a stranded Ulandian veteran is reduced to begging for alms on the street. A Peregrinian soldier on patrol is moved by his plight and helps him with money so he can buy his passage home. Terraced Villa in Peregrinus - 5 by Gabriel Thomson, on Flickr] I feel like a bit of a fraud cause i didn't actually take part in the Kaliphlin civil war... (work was bonkers during that time), but at least i can play a role in showing the recovery afterwards! Anyway, i hope you have enjoyed looking at my build. C&c welcome as always.
  21. Hidden beneath castle Anrarr, in a not so long forgotten series of cavernous cellars lies the headquarters of the High council resistance to the rule of the Desert King. The main story and all four builds from the rest of build are available in the [summer Joust 2016] Kaliphlin Team thread. I would like to claim the UoP credits for: Geography: Grasslands, Military Science: Fortification, General Building: Lighted Builds (LEDs)
  22. As the Kaliphlin civil war came to a close, shortage of food, and resistance to the new leader of the guild, causing unrest among the populace. Now, after the mock glamour of the civil war attracting so much attention from the wider diplomatic scene, let us return to the desert lands to find what goes on there... Thanks to Kayne for filling the gap. Thanks are also due to Gabe for replacing Si-MOCs when he ran out of time due to BrickWorld with only ten days to go. Thanks also to Mark of MMCB Capes for printing the custom flags. Unfortunately they didn't arrive in time to be used by Kayne in his builds. We will also be posting our MOCs separately to make it easier for them to be registered as free builds.
  23. The first part of the Elemendi Story: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=121423&hl=elemendi As Kha opened the door to The Maritime Inn, he was assaulted by a myriad of senses. Foremost of course was the combination of odors of roasting pheasant, stale ale and unwashed bodies. He turned and looked back quickly at the sign just outside the Inn, it was a clever combination of a smiling sailor aboard a ship. With a chuckle at the at pun the innkeeper used to name his establishment located on the southern coast of Kaliphlin a days ride northwest of Ras-el-Ahken but not quite to Mypa Stedor, Kha continued through the door into The Maritime Inn, or The Merry-time Inn as many of the locals referred to it. The interior was dimly lit, and heavy with smoke from both the fire burning in the hearth as well as the many patrons and their various pipes. The smoky odor was riddled with different aromas hinting of spices and weeds from all over Historica, but all of them were strong enough to be noticed. He looked to the corner where he knew his contact would be waiting. The Inn itself was built with a tall ceiling nearing twenty feet, with windows all the way up that look out upon the Great Southern Ocean. In the distance out upon the sea, Kha could see the darkened clouds that made up the vortex of The Void Tide a few miles off the coast. There seemed to be nowhere in the place where space was not used for something. There were barrels of all sorts of sundries or potent drinks all over, shelves and crates of other goods. Even the air space was used up with strings of lights, supports that held up Kha knew not, and nets of other goods hanging above the patrons heads. But there, at a table in the corner, and facing the door to see Kha when he entered was Masa. Masa is another member of The Resistance here in Kaliphlin, and Kha’s co-conspirator in this current endeavor. Joining Masa at the table was what appeared to be a mercenary or some sort of adventurer that Kha did not know. “Masa, good to see you safe!” Kha said. “You as well Kha. May I introduce Jarrick of The Dragon’s Cape. He is the man I was telling you of that knows that which we seek.” Masa said with a sidelong glance to the closest table. It was a habit both Masa and Kha had seemed to fall into lately since the Desert King began hunting them both. “Hello Lord Kha of Ras...”Jarrick began. “Let’s skip the formalities and lower the volume.” Kha said and also looked around the gathering room. “I cannot afford to be known anywhere in Kaliphlin as it stands right now.” “Understood, well I suppose I should get right down to business then.” Jarrick took a drink from his glass, and Kha could smell the pungent odor of strong spirits as he tilted the glass. “I know what you seek, and what you need in order to supplant The Desert King. The are referred to as The Elemendi, and once were a common sight across all of Historica. They are race of beings with an affinity to the Five Elements.” “Five Elements?” Kha asked. “Last I knew there were four elements, and Revolword already tried to tap that power.” “Revolword was an amateur compared to the Elemendi. And yes, there are five elements. Earth or Stone, Fire, Water, Air and Life. Each of them has its own power, but when they work together, even more can be accomplished. Some of them can boost or assist the others. That is where the trouble started!” Jarrick paused again to take another drink. “Three thousand years ago, the Elemendi were all over Historica. They live for centuries and can tap these powers, but when they mate, it is for life and they never have more offspring than two. It was impossible, the mother would pass during the third pregnancy. I don’t know if it was some sort of divine limit placed upon them, or just the cost of the magic, but it was never recorded that three children were born from a coupling. As you can imagine, that power was craved by those in power. The elemendi themselves were never interested in politics, they seemed to garner a joy of life simply from helping. But, those in power always have resources, and those resources led to ways to control the elemendi. I don’t know the details, or how they did that, but that was when much of Historica was plunged into a dark time. Wars raged across the land and the elemendi were controlled by both sides.” Jarrick looked away as if seeing that faraway time himself. “The power of the elemendi was tremendous. The five elements each meant so much more than implied. Water, the ability to manipulate any liquid and control all of its properties. The ancients used it purify water and help with agriculture, but once the wars started, new uses were found. Freezing the blood of victims too weak to resist, creating great fountains of ice and water that were used as weapons and so on. Fire, the ability to manipulate heat and flame. Once used to provide heat and food to the masses, it was turned to a burning inferno of destruction and death. Air, once used to aid in transportation, was then turned to be a razor focused tempest of destruction. Earth was used to terraform and mine for needed items in colonies, became an earth shattering force of destruction. Once the warmongers took over, they soon learned the elemendi could also control metal and used that in so many destructive ways it couldn’t even be recorded well enough to lend merit. Finally, the Power of Life, used originally to grow plant life and heal, it was distorted to its opposite and used to snuff out life and harm rather than heal. “The cost of the magic and its destructive properties began to take a toll on the elemendi and they began to die off, unable to rebuild their population. They were lost to civilization, wounded and retreating to where they were believed to be extinct.” “But they are not, you are implying?” Kha asked. “No. They are still around, but in such small number and in such fear of abuse that they remain hidden. But, there is man who lives deep in the Rakath Mountains who has some elemendi under his control. He is known only as a collector. He has spent lifetimes collecting races from around the world, and he has some of them in his keep.” “How do you know?” “I have made contact with someone who has escaped from him. I was given first-hand account of what transpires there. He has rows and rows of cages and prisons full of creatures only known in imagination. What is worse, he is intelligent and creative. He has bred different races, just to see what it would beget. Some of them have been bred with the elemendi and have gained some sort of control over the elements. Not to the extent of a pure bred, but he has found a way to produce their magic to some degree without being limited to two births.” Kha exhaled and leaned back. Looking over at Masa to see if he believed this tale as well. “That is horrible and incredible at the same time,” Masa said. “If that is true, those poor souls lead a tortured life and need to be freed no matter what!” “And, they could be a great ally in our cause against the Desert King.” Kha added. “But, I agree. We need to help them out, and once free we need to share our plight. If they are sympathetic, we would welcome their help. But, we cannot force them.” Masa looked Kha straight in the eyes, and Kha could see the emotion there. He knew that his friend was as hard as steel, but could see the empathy for these poor souls. As he watched, Masa’s eyes darkened and they both turned to look back at Jarrick. “I am glad to hear that you both understand what is at stake.” With that, Jarrick tapped the floor four times with his boot. The front door of the Inn opened, and immediately everyone turned to see what had seemed to swallow the light. Kha was speechless as he saw what appeared to be at least a 10 foot tall cross between a man and an elephant enter the Inn. His girth was large enough to match his height as well, and he was heading directly toward Kha and Masa. They exchanged glances and began to set themselves for trouble. Jarrick, just chuckled and set down his drink. “This, gentleman is Bronos. He is the one I was telling you about. Bronos, introduce yourself.” “Hello gentlemen, my name is Bronos of the Mastadoni tribe. I assume that Jarrick has told you of my origins.” His voice was surprisingly gentle for a beast of his size, yet still sounded as if it were coming from down a hallway that amplified and deepened its tenor. “I was born from a Mastadoni in captivity with the collector. My mother was bred with a Water Elemendi and I am what resulted.” “Bronos….it is a pleasure to meet you! I think we may be able to help…”, Masa turned to Kha and saw the same look of awe on the face of his friend.
  24. Mitgardia5rs_140616 by Gabriel Thomson, on Flickr] Runa Hoskuldottir spoke the words of leaving with care and reverence, asking the gods and the ancestors to bless the journey they were about to embark upon. The man by her side stood silent, but he made the offerings at the right time, as she had instructed him, the coins of passage falling into the sacred bowl in a pattern that promised fair winds. The ritual over, she turned to look at him, smiling. “Well Erland, we shall have no trouble until we reach the mainland at least. A good start.” Erland lifted his careworn face to meet her eyes. “Perhaps I am the trouble on the road. I know your father doesn’t approve of our betrothal, and how can I blame him? He knows next to nothing of me, and I cannot remember enough to quell his fears. Perhaps Sigurd was right and they should have left me to be claimed by the waves, at least that way your family would not be deprived of you in this hour!” Runa snorted impatience. It was one of the things he loved about her, how little patience she had for his doubt and self-pity. “Don’t talk nonsense, betrothed. Do you think I could remain deceived about your true nature after months of nursing you back to health? You are a good man, I know it, and when we find your family, you will know it again too. As for Sigurd and Bjarke, they are superstitious fools to think that you are ill-omened just because they lost their best fishhook the day they found you floating in the wreckage of that ship. The gods are not responsible for their carelessness!” Erland smiled. “Well, perhaps it shall be as you say. But we certainly won’t have fair winds to the mainland unless we move soon, no matter what the gods say. Is Olaf ready to go?” Runa reached down to stroke the stocky grey cat at her feet. “Come then Olaf! I have packed a snack for you on the boat.” He miowed in response and trotted down the steps toward the jetty, with the couple following close behind him. To be continued… So i hope this will become a bit of a multi-build storyline... it started mainly cause i realised just how little of Historica i'd built in, and i wanted a reason to roam about a bit. I'd never built in Mitgardia before now either, so i just had to kick things off there. But i do want to build more in Peregrinus as well (which has been woefully neglected by me), so the story might become slow going! C&c welcome as always!
  25. So this is an old moc... a really old moc! I started building it originally for the Sultan's Gate community build in mid-2014, but then got sidetracked onto other things and ended up missing the comp deadline altogether. Eventually i returned to it and finished it in Jan 2015. I always meant to post it in GoH once i had finished, but a demanding work schedule meant that this plan ended slipping through the cracks - whoops. Finally this year i find myself with more time and got around to making a new build to return to the guilds with (more on that later), and realised to my embarassment that this one never got posted! So this clearing the decks to some extent. So anyway, this is the description i wrote up for my version of Sultan's Gate's merchant's entrance: Often trade entrances into cities in Historica are modest affairs... not so however in Sultan's Gate! The cities strategic location has seen flourishing trade down the centuries, which has made some merchants very rich indeed. This allowed the powerful merchant's guild to commission the lift many years before, completed in the grand style to advertise the wealth and power of the city. Goods that are perishable or particularly valuable are often sent by lift to avoid the treacherous climb up the escarpment. The lift is very safe with only a few losses, mainly from overbearing merchants ordering it's use on high wind days. (A local legend has it that a giant roc once bit through the lift chain and made off with the entire box, but this has never been substantiated.) A ride in the lift to the ground and back again is a rite of passage for many of the young thrillseekers in the city, who often try to stow away or bribe the guards for the experience. Above the clouds - the great merchant's lift of Sultan's Gate by Gabriel Thomson, on Flickr] Abovetheclouds - Merchant's lift 4 by Gabriel Thomson, on Flickr] One of the things i was keen to try out with this build was a style of angled rockwork that was pioneered by Torgar. It was perfect for creating narrow sloping ledges on the cliff face. The long cloud base was an afterthought as i had committed to exhibiting this at Brickvention (a Lego show in Melbourne, Australia), and had to soak up some more table space. I think the asymmetric composition really helped it in the end and it was great to be able to crack out one of my great eagles in a moc for the first time! It took a little trial and error to get it to run straight, but was a lot of fun to build and operate, especially at Brickvention. I would stand away from the table and activate it wherever kids came up to touch the lift - seeing them trying to figure out how it was moving was quite amusing!
