  1. Smaug the Terrible by Chris Yee, on Flickr Smaug the Terrible, Chiefest of Calamities and the one of the main antagonists in "The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug". With the many references available, I had chosen to focus heavily on the facial features to capture the menacing personality of the fire drake. The creation had taken about 6 months of planning, purchasing and research followed by 200+ hours of production building with over 10,000 parts (excluding the gold pile), ready for the Christchurch Brick Show 2016, held over the 16-17 July weekend. This was my first foray into organic building using bricks as I've been working with Bionicle and Technic based systems for many years, so this end result I am quite pleased with. Initially Smaug was to stand about 70cm in height, 60cm in length and about 40cm wide. Due to a structural deficiency in the neck construction (the night before the show setup, I might add), the majority of the neck was cast aside to have the head and first few neck segments laying atop of my entire collection of gold elements, which took up 2x 2 litre containers. Many thanks to Legonardo for helping replenish my gold stores, WIP feedback, and for the great photo of the creation. Smaug is currently on its way to Wellington where it will be displayed in other various exhibits and events in the months to come. Enjoy Chris
  2. Warning: This thread might cause discomfort with your current dragon situation. Viewer discretion is advised. The Dragonification of Smaug the Wyvern Ever since the discussion whether Smaug was a wyvern or a dragon came up, I felt the need to give arms to the ultimate LEGO creature. According to some, dragons without arms are merely wyverns and therefore sad creatures. Would I dare to lay hands (pun intended) on such a marvellous creature? Would I dare drilling holes in it? Modified Smaug side by MWardancer, auf Flickr Modified Smaug total by MWardancer, auf Flickr Modified Smaug - The Last Thing You Ever Shall See by MWardancer, auf Flickr Modified Smaug showing his new claws by MWardancer, auf Flickr Modified Smaug from above by MWardancer, auf Flickr Customization notes: Buying two dark red arms is cheap and easy, so I decided to use techniques which would mess up the arms and not Smaug's body if things go wrong. When customizing a minifigure, you have to throw away parts sometimes because you destroyed them with paint, glue or drills. You cannot do that with an expensive dragon torso. Unlike the green fantasy dragon or similar molds, Smaug's front is much slimmer and curved. There is no flat straight surface where you could simply attach dragon arms. They would have big gaps and wrong angles. So I needed to carve and sand the arms to fit a threedimensional plain. This was easier than I thought. Also at this point there is no risk damaging the body yet. Then I drilled the holes to attach the arms. This fortunately worked well. Attaching the arms afterwards took over an hour because the pins I attached would not stick. The arms cannot move. It is impossible to achieve that because of the uneven shape of the torso.
  3. Hello everybody In the last week I finally finished my latest creation so far - it shows Thorin and his company fighting in the mines of Erebor against Smaug. Due to the fact that I always wanted to make a MOC with Smaug I decided to make a creation of this scene. Into the Fire by Balbo ., auf Flickr The technique for the ground is inspired by Speedyhead ( www.imperiumdersteine.de/index.php?/topic/43772-die-thraw... ) from the LUG imperiumdersteine.de :) I wish you all a happy new year and all the best for 2016 Thanks for watching!
  4. "He gazed for what seemed an age, before drawn almost against his will, he stole from the shadow of the doorway, across the floor to the nearest edge of the mounds of treasure. Above him the sleeping dragon lay, a dire menace even in his sleep. He grasped a great two-handled cup, as heavy as he could carry, and cast one fearful eye upwards. Smaug stirred a wing, opened a claw, the rumble of his snoring changed its note... Thieves! Fire! Murder! Such a thing had not happened since first he came to the Mountain! His rage passes description - the sort of rage that is only seen when rich folk that have more than they can enjoy suddenly lose something that they have long had but have never before used or wanted. His fire belched forth, the hall smoked, he shook the mountain-roots." ~ J.R.R Tolkien, The Hobbit Here's my entry for the MEC category C. The Lord of the Rings brought me out of my dark ages so I had to get at least one build up for this contest...Now lets see if I can get something built for the other two categories before the deadline . A few more pictures below, and still a few more on flickr.
  5. Hi everyone, First big try with a licenced theme - I wanted to recreate a famous scene from The Hobbit, the awakening of Smaug : It was created to be displayed in 2 Lego events in France, I wanted to show a much more frightening dragon than the official one (and slightly bigger ^^) Hardest part of the build was to deal with the weight and orientation of the neck and head. Bad day for Bilbo : Details for the dragon's head (maybe some improvements will be done for the eyes) : The shape of the head is maybe not very movie-accurate but it was recognized by the audience, that was enough for me A last pic, with a look at the dragon's mouth : Hope you'll like it
  6. Hello, I am currently working on my own version of Smaug. Currently this looks like this: I am interested to get your feedback! Have a nice weekend! Yours ArchitectureFan
  7. Follow the adventure of a hero (Steve) who sets out to free the land of the fierce Ender Dragon. My goal with this film was to take on Minecraft with a medieval theme. For the medieval aspect I was inspired by Skyrim and Lord of the Rings. I'm not the best expert there is on Minecraft but I tried to incorporate as many main elements there are from the game that makes it so unique into the story. I completed the film in 10 days. I had to cut out some scenes from the original story due to animation scheduling conflicts. Also if your following the DC/Marvel crossover series be sure to stay for the post credit scene. Things are going to get heated up starting in the next chapter. Directed, Animated, and Music Composed by Tristan Kilmer Written by David Kilmer and Tristan Kilmer Narration preformed by Neon Icy Wings Starring Bret Newton as Captain Marvel Coulter Rail as Plastic Man Connor Sheehy as Spider Man
  8. Hello My recent build is once again from Middleearth and shows Smaug's attack at Lake Town. The whole build basically finished before i got the chance to watch the second Hobbit movie the first time, so the houses of Lake Town and Smaug are result of the description in the book and my own imagination. Next to fitting proportions and the general organic look it was important for me to realize the iconic gold belly of Smaug. More pictures on MOCpages. I hope you like it! Jonas
  9. Smaug the Magnificent Micro He loves Gold! I have to say this is the smallest Smaug I’ve ever seen or built (Heh heh). Anyways I wish so much that I could make a massive Smaug, however my gold hoards are rather low for that, so I settled with Micro. Although don’t you call my micro hoard puny—those coins are as big as 12 micro hobbits! This works quite well for another Middle Earth Micro like my Orthanc. Smaug himself was quite a challenge to make at this scale, but I settled with some piles of red bricks to give the impression of him. In all actuality he’s only made from two red minifigure hands, two red plums, and a red snake. And yes, it was a painful process to pile up those coins and then place a dragon on it. Enjoy! ~Nemo
