  1. It’s market day in Weelond! Residents have come to the market house on the village green to sell their wares. The ground floor of the market house is used to store goods, and the archways also serve as vendor stalls on market days. The 2nd floor of the market house is used as a meeting place for town elders and for community events. Some days there might be people selling animal skins and furs, leather goods, iron cooking pots, and other artisan goods, but today it looks like it’s farm produce day. As we walk along the street, Mrs. Pifano is selling bananas and apples. In addition to the man she’s talking to, the militiaman on horseback appears interested. Set up on the cobblestones in front of the market house we find “Old Man” Claesen, a local fisherman, and his young assistant with two barrels of fresh fish. Aaron van der Meede is talking to Mrs. Lockerman, who is selling carrots from her garden. At the far end of the building, Samuel Amwell is unloading kegs from his brewery. Moving to the other side of the market house, we see Sam’s assistant tending to the ox that pulls the cart. Up the street on the far side of the green, we are greeted by the smell of fresh baked bread and pastries. Let’s stop and buy some treats! The next smell is not as pleasant! A pig farmer has set up a temporary pen and brought his pigs to market. They are fat and ready for slaughter. Who wants bacon? But bacon would take time. The poultry farmer has cooked turkey legs ready now! He also has chickens for sale. That’s a visit to the Weelond market!
  2. Do you wear a shirt? Or pants? Or underwear? I am sure you do. And I am also sure that some of the cloth you are wearing was manufactured in Weelond. Weelond?, you ask? That's right, Weelond, on the island of An Holli. You don't believe me? Come along, young lad, and let me show you. A while ago the largest facility in the new world has commenced its business. In the Augustinian Colonial Textiles (named in the honour of our beloved king), the MCTC fabricates cotton, making some of the finest cloth in all of Terra Nova. From here, the cloth is brought to cities both in the new and in the old world. Come and join me for a small tour through our Royal Cotton Factory, or look around yourself. Augustinian Colonial Textiles The workers are working quite hard right now. Take a look from the top, right through the roof, and see the inside unfold. Isn't it colourful inside? Spinning cotton is no easy task. We have quite some machinery, here in Weelond. Those men are really doing their best to keep the spinning machines running all the time, and running and running. Whenever a piece of cotton is all rolled up to a thread, a new one is put on the machine, and a new one, and so on... Believe it or not, your shirt did not grow on a field like that. Someone has added that precious green colour to it, at some point. Last but surely not least, we are weaving. It's funny, actually, that four women operate the machines while more than 10 people are constantly carrying around fibres and cloth to keep the machines running. Storage racks are important. Because believe it or not, not everything we produce is transported away immediately. This does not only go for white or coloured fibres, but also for fine cloth. We always try to be ahead of ourselves, here at the MCTC. This is why we installed a small wagon to ease our work. Because we care about logistics. And we care about our workers. Take a break and eat some of that tasty "chocolate" thing we have imported from Cocovia. Anyone still want some carrots? Noone? Really? And look outside. Isn't she a beauty, our factory? It's quite funny that the backdoor is the place where we do most of our business. Having a river nearby always helps. Look at those two, bringing in some new cotton for us to make cloth from. Will it be green or purple, what do you think? Yellow you say? I'm not so sure, I think we have produced enough yellow cloth for today. But who am I to tell? Did you know August? That's how we call that small pig. Noone has a clue how August got here, or how he has any right to be here. But we all think he's quite cute, doing what he does, so we let him do his thing. Now imagine you were an eagle, my little friend. Just think about how much good we are doing to the world, running this factory. Noone has to freeze in cold winters once there is enough cloth in the world. Yeah, just look around a bit more and memorize what you see here. Because what you see here, young lad, is the future of the world. It's not ships, nor gold nor treasures, it's factories, it's industry. The real revolutions of the next years won't be against kings. The real revolutions will be against our untechnologised past and for the machinery of the future. I'm a weirdo, you say? Well, just look around and embrace the future, my dear. Believe it or not, accept it or don't - you won't change it. Neither will I. But I will be part of it. Why won't you? see a full album on Flickr for more pictures This is by far the hugest build I have done till now, and by far the best (in my personal opinion). Thank you BoBS for inspiring me to go for something like this. And thank you also to all those people who gave me inspiration with all their wonderful builds here at BoBS. And of course a great thank you to my fellow MCTC members for sticking with me for the Royal Textile Factory, from the initial idea (let's rather call it a vision), through financing and the realisation, and for providing feedback and suggestions during the building phase. You are great. Alright. Time to clean up my Lego over the... next few weeks I am afraid.
  3. There is much to celebrate in Weelond on the island of An Holli. The new royal textile factory is opening, and several MCTC dignitaries have arrived to see the factory in person. Additionally, the mayor of Weelond, Willem Guilder, has just been appointed governor of the island. Governor Guilder (he likes how that sounds!) hosts his guests at his new residence. The governor’s mansion is a simple 2-story affair with an entrance portico and a kitchen off the southern wing. A statue and fountain grace the front lawn. A stone path around the north wing leads to a garden in the back. Small access hatches in the cupola allow access to the widow’s walk along the top of the roof. Here Governor Guilder greets the mayor of Nova Terreli, Román Esteban Fontonajo, and his lovely wife Marietta. Fontonajo was instrumental in getting the royal factory built in Weelond, and Guilder is quite grateful. Eslandola’s Secretary of State, Guy K. Wyndzon, leader of the Merchant’s Colonial Trading Company, discusses matters with the mayor of Bardo, Colonel Oystridge. Rumor has it that the colonel may soon be named governor of the island of An Toli. Guilder needs to let the colonel know that the position comes with no upgrade in pay beyond the continuing mayoral duties, but the title does look nice on the letterhead. Guy’s uncle has wandered onto the lawn and started yelling at the statue of the Eslandolan explorer who discovered An Holli more than 50 years ago. Perhaps Guy’s uncle knew him before he was a statue? Regardless, the other guests steer clear of him… A view of the house unobstructed by the fountain: Here's how the grounds look to anyone who might fly over in a phlogisphere... Many thanks (and apologies) to Kai NRG, Elostirion, and Sir Stig for use of their characters. I hope my versions of their characters is close enough for government work!
  4. Willem Guilder was pleased with how his cotton plantation was progressing. With some early returns in hand, he could afford to open up additional acres for planting. So he set a team of men to clearing and plowing the land. *** This build expands on the earlier medium plantation found here, increasing it in size to a large plantation. Here is the new build by itself: And here it is combined with the previous build: In addition to the new sections, I added some stones to the road along the fence in the old build, as you can see better here: A close-up of the plow: And a resting worker with his scythe: I think the plowed rows in the field worked out ok (although I did get some glare off the slope pieces I used in one of the photos). All feedback welcome!
  5. Aaron van der Meede is a young lawyer, recently graduated from the University of Terreli. Working for an established attorney, Aaron was tasked with finding a suitable plot of land in the islands for a plantation for a wealthy client. Aaron did some research and then sailed to An Holli. There the young lawyer fell in love with a world he had never imagined. The lush countryside intoxicated him with an enthusiasm for life. Aaron quickly completed his task, finding a suitable plot for the client’s future plantation and sent word back on a fast ship. But Aaron did not return to Terreli to deliver his findings in person. Aaron could not imagine ever going back. The islands were where he belonged. He scouted the town of Weelond for a suitable place to set up shop. In the warehouse district he found what he was looking for. He found a small private warehouse with available space on the second floor. The building was a bit older than others around -- the stone walls were no longer whitewashed, and the roof was made of wooden planks, not the red tiles seen almost everywhere – but the building was sound, and the location was good. The second-floor space was really nothing more than a small apartment, but he could make it into an office. Aaron quickly found the proprietor and they came to an agreement for the young lawyer to rent the space. Aaron borrowed a ladder and literally put out his shingle. And the fates clearly approved of the young lawyer’s decision. Before Aaron even had a chance to furnish his office or send for his books, a prospective client saw his sign and came up the stairs. Aaron had his first client, surely the first of many. *** One of the things I wanted to do with this build was play with the roof technique. I think I'd adjust how I did it next time; feedback on it is appreciated. I planned on doing an interior, but I wasn't particularly happy with how the wall panels looked from the inside, and I wound up stealing the tiles I used on the floors for another build.
  6. Colonel Oystridge sat in his office in the Officer Quarter on Weelond. He had just finished a map of the island where he found Orbinson and Mercredi, drawn by a local cartographer for his coloring book. "Hmm, I wonder where I put my cigars... Did I bring them from the ship? Let's see, last I had them..." He had not completed his line of though before he heard a familiar knock. The knock of the order. "Come in!" It was Gilroy O’Dougahallahan, the keeper of the books. "Greetings, Colonel. I come with news from the order. Bardo is suffering from food shortage and bad morale. Your countenance are needed there." "Thats a shame. I have begun to like it here in Weelond. But I can't dismiss The Orders orders. Bad morale you say? Bad morale is bad for your health. They couldn't have just sent a letter?". "Sir, with all due respect, everyone knows that no one just writes the Colonel. You have a great deal of respect in the colonies, you know". "Well, I suppose. It would have been nice to get a letter once in a while though. I am going to forget how to read", he laughed merrily. "Not to worry, I am quite sure the people of Bardo won't notice." "That bad, is it? We will have to something about that. Well then, what are we waiting for? Would you mind taking my belongings to the docks and telling my ship not to unload the spices. I have a couple of friends I have to visit before we go", The Colonel asked. "Actually, there is a small house I wanted to do some research...". (Small house in Weelond) Well aware of which house Gilroy was referring to he replied: "That's an order. If you don't mind. We won't set sail until tomorrow morning". The Colonel had a knack for getting his way without making people feel repressed, and still carry his authority well. Often this involved just listening, not stressing and leaving some open time in his plans for people to do their thing. "Oh, well then, Certainly, sir, I'll see to it". Ooc: This build will not be licenced for quite a while, so the Majors bonus is still available. It is actually available if the MCTC or the settlement of Weelond wants to licence it. And there is a job opening for a new officer and gentleman Kai, I hope you don't me referring to your small house.
  7. This is my third free build of the month, so approvals and critiques are most welcome. Samuel Amwell’s family have been brewers for generations, but Samuel is the first of his family to leave the mainland and move to the islands. In Weelond on the island of An Holli, Samuel has opened the Weelond Brewing Company. The tropical setting is perfect for growing the sugarcane necessary for distilling rum, and the ingredients for his family’s ale are also plentiful. Samuel works diligently to make sure his rum and ale are the best in the islands, and Eslandolan sailors near and far are quickly becoming familiar with WBC beverages.
  8. Weelond, like Bardo, is a company town, and the company keeps it busy! At the MCTC warehouse, cargo handlers are busy sorting crates and barrels of the latest trade goods. Trade is the lifeblood of this settlement on An Holli. Corn, cotton, and textiles are the primary exports currently (although there are rumors that rum and ale may soon be produced locally), and various exotic foodstuffs and equipment are imported. Local MCTC officials are anxious to see more properties go up in Weelond. * * * * * A couple of new pictures have surfaced of this warehouse. Apparently there's more to it than initially illustrated. The warehouse extends well back from the street front. A side alley allows the workers to move goods out of the main street while they work. But they better watch what they're doing. Two pigs have escaped!
  9. Got 4 dark red profile bricks and just had to put them to some good use! This, by the way, is Guy's Uncle. Not quite sure what exactly he is doing in Weelond, but... here he is! I decided to do an SK style slide-out interior - pretty fun and remarkably easy! I'm on a roll! This pirate era stuff is fun! C&C welcome! This is my third free-build this month.
  10. We sailed into Weelond Bay and anchored in the harbor. Even though Weelond was founded as a company town of the MCTC, the settlement was open to all, and the docks were no exception. This was a public wharf. As we rowed to shore to speak with the dockmaster, the Weelond waterfront came into focus. The dockmaster was currently busy with Captain Janszen and his first mate. Perhaps a problem with his manifest? Behind them the street was bustling with activity. Both warehouses were busy moving crates and barrels to their designated spots, some coming in, some going out. And was that Captain Silver coming down the stairs? Who had he been visiting? Over to our left, a father and his son were fishing. They better make sure that cat doesn’t get their catch. As soon as the dockmaster is done with Janszen, we’ll discuss our business with him. * * * * * This MOC is made up of several builds you’ve seen here before (the small warehouse with room above, the MCTC warehouse, the brewery). The dock has even appeared before (introducing a ship, and practicing for a duel), but never as the focus of the build. Probably only 10% of this is new. But I wanted to see how it would all fit together in a larger display, and I wanted to put the focus on the dock, which I will now license as a medium commerce property. Here are a couple more views: As always, all C&C welcome.
  11. The 'An Holli Corrington College', or The 'Corrish' or 'Red' School to the locals, has been completed in the Eslandolan settlement of Weelond. The school is ultimately the result of correspondence between the Mayor of Weelond, Willem Guilder and the temporary military governor of Alicentia, Major Dirk Allock. Mayor Guilder, concerned regarding the lack of educational facilities in his settlement, wrote to Major Allock in his capacity as a fellow (albeit yet to be confirmed) controller of a settlement, and a Corlander famed for his membership and patronage of the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy. After swift negotiations, Major Allcock agreed that the society would establish an office and educational facility in Weelond. Unable to visit Weelond just yet (although he has plans to do so in the near future), Major Allcock has delegated the responsibility of the new school to Thomas Elliot, a school teacher from Arlinsport. Elliot also dabbles in architecture, so the design of the new school was also left to him. Major Allcock gave some loose direction, the school should ideally be on a medium plot size, and should be a testament to the Corlander dedication to the Sciences and education in general. On arriving in Weelond Elliot found the purchase of a suitable block of land quite difficult, even with a letter of introduction from the Mayor himself. Not surprisingly in a settlement controlled by the very successful merchants of the MCTC, land prices were highly competitive to say the least! In the end Elliot settled for a small, narrow block and secured its lease at a very competitive rate (it was thought too small to be of any real value!). He then proceed to design a three story facility. To highlight this was a Corlander establishment, the only natural colour to build in was of course red - with black and white trim. Unfortunately white stone was in quite high demand, and white washing didn't convey the grandeur Elliot wished to convey, so the white was replaced with light grey. The school as seen from the street with an Eslandolan Soldier patrolling the streets, and from the rear where a small chilli bush has been cultivated - Elliot has developed quite a taste for spicy foods and grows his own supply! The ground floor is used for classes. Mondays and Tuesdays Elliot teaches the children of wealthy merchants and the moneyed class. The essentials of reading, writing and arithmetic are covered (He finds this class most attentive to the mathematical sessions!) as well as a smattering of Natural Philosophy. Wednesdays and Thursdays are a more mature age, with locals interested in Natural Philosophy learning the basics of that science. Fridays and Saturdays Elliot has off, or devotes to his own studies, and Sundays he holds free classes for the poorer children of the settlement who are required to work throughout the week. The middle floor is a devoted living area which is also regularly co-opted for scientific studies. The upper floor is Elliot's Bed chamber and where his white cat Molly can often be found. The whole place is furnished in a rather Spartan style, some may remark it needs a women's touch? Who knows, maybe School master Elliot will find love with a local Eslandolan women? ----------------------------- Something a little different from my usual style, my first attempt at a fully modular house. Heavily based on the design in the excellent MOC found here, I really liked the turret on the front of the building but modified the rear of the building, windows, roof and most obviously the colours! I wanted to use bright 'classic' colours - hopefully the red is not too bright and fits in to the generally more colourful Eslandolan style! I was a bit worried the design maybe a bit modern, but I think it works. The build will be licensed as a small educational property in the settlement of Weelond. Enjoy and as always C&C welcome! Oh and here is an extra view of all the components together!
