(I was torn between Train Tech and Town forums for this thread, so if it needs moving - don't hesitate to move it, mods!) Recently a Flickr user named elijahleestewart commented on one of my riverboat pictures asking about me making a Ninjago ferry from season 4. I said I already had City set 60119 (Ferry) and was not interested in making another. But this conversation got wheels turning, and about two hours later I came up with this vessel you see here, which was made by tearing apart my original Ferry to revise it. The port / left side of the vessel. From here you can see the ladder to access the bridge. The starboard (or right side). The opening gates no longer fold down (as in the original set 60119), but they do split apart to allow train cars to be loaded two at a time. You can load two of the bigger cars (24 or 28 studs long), three 16-long cars, or a single 34 stud long depressed center car on this ferry or you can mix and match. (The last 34 stud long car type is too long to have two of it's kind on there, but it can fit one 34 long and another of anything shorter than that such as a 16, 24 or 28.) The roof section of the bridge is removable to place figures at the controls. Another source of inspiration was the Albatross, a former Vicksburg-area railroad ferry from 1907 that was converted to a St. Louis river cruising ship (one of the largest vessels ever on the river) called the Admiral in the late 1930's which then became a casino and then was sadly scrapped in 2011. This model was heavily inspired by set 4555 (Cargo Station) from 1995 and by set 60052 (Cargo Train) from 2014. I smashed both models together and added some of my inspiration in places. (This model is also supposed to be compatible with set 60169 (Cargo Terminal) from this years summer CITY lineup.) As a side note, the sign on top of the lower floor is supposed to say CARGO TERMINAL in printed 1 x 1 tiles. The original set 4555 is one of the sets my father bought back in 1995 when 9v was King and I was just a little baby. Growing up I remember playing fondly with this set.... actually, I loved tearing it apart and making it better, which drove my Dad nuts. I think I tore his collection apart so much he decided to give me my own trains to pull apart, which are actually still together today. The rear of the model. I added new 1x6x5 panels to add a bit of texture to the otherwise smooth area. The model features expanded interior details such as the staircase to access the top floor where the conference / break room is from the lower floor secretary's desk area. It also features a swing open rear section containing a office under the stairs, with a Technic pin to lock it closed. NOTE: The rear half can only open up to 90 degrees, as the base of the model prevents it from opening any further. The gantry and the crane itself slide back and forth to provide for truck to train (or train to truck) movement of shipping containers or raw materials by themselves. The gantry can move left to right (red arrow), while the actual crane can move forward and back. (yellow arrow) Unfortunately, the LDD program doesn't allow for it to move, but it will in real life! This model is missing one crucial part: the cable for the crane. (That's this part: http://www.bricklink...e?P=x77ac50#T=C ) With the new enlarged road section, the model now lines up with the modern printed road base-plates. In my original version, I based the model off of the 2004 Harry Potter set 4755, the Knight Bus. The model was quite tall and very top-heavy, plus it had a black Fabuland staircase attached to the back, making it not able to go over bumps in the road or railway level crossings. This bus features a rear staircase and removable floors with plenty of seats. Contains this stair case in black: http://www.bricklink...Item.asp?P=2046 (It's not in Lego Digital Designer, sadly.) Now I have my new version, inspired by the 2011 set 4866, which was also called the Knight Bus. It is two bricks shorter, with no back staircase to keep it from grounding on level crossings. The rear features the entryway to the bus, along with a railing, rear bumper and single tail light. Here we see that the roof and upper level a removable, and are even grouped individually in Lego Digital Designer to allow for easy access. The bus even fits under my traffic lights by 1/3 of a stud... my old bus could not even come close to fitting under this! According to LDD Manager, this model is also available in Dark bluish gray or white instead of reddish brown... although many more colors are possible with slight modifications.
