  1. Here's Garry, introducing the Variable Exploration Craft model 3, nicknamed "Rhino", though more for its slight resemblance to a rhinoceros beetle (and its appropriately somewhat clumsy flight capabilities) than anything to do with the majestic large african mammal, but don't tell him that. Note the tail fins in the back. There's more to this than you might think. The basis for this build was the legs, in particular the way they connect to the body involving these parts. I feel like I got lucky with how sturdy this turned out to be, as unsupported single-stud connections can be incredibly delicate and fiddly, especially as far as moving parts are concerned. ...though the stability of the rear wheel connection seems to depend entirely on the individual tolerances of those stud/half-pin parts and how well they hold a bar through the pin end; I went through a few before finding some that held well enough. There's almost certainly a better way to do this. Everything I build needs some kind of flexible joint, now in the form of moving legs/suspension for tough terrain. When the terrain is too tough, the VEC-3 can take to the air! During the build, I thought the legs looked kind of like a quadcopter when they were spread out like this, so I worked in a simple transformation feature. Finally the underside, for a better view of how it's built. Full gallery with some more pics can be found here!
  2. Location: C06 Hyreal Tags: MANTIS, land vehicle, spying Double D's log 27: I must be going crazy. First I forget all of what happened in two weeks aside from a strange relic thing, and now I feel like I'm back in time, but in the future...sort of? All I know is my mission: to continue punching holes in Kawashita's barrels that hold water for their experimental hydraulic plants here on Hyreal. The barrels were the ones being extracted from Kawashita's extraction and purification plants. It seems that Kawashita decided to spread out its merchandise so that they wouldn't have single-point targets. The hovercraft, which my friend accurately called the 'hoverchair,' that I get to use kind of bounces as it moves, and it turns in a drift-like motion. It took a while to get used to, but it's now natural, and even quite fun to drive! It is much faster than any steam powered ground vehicle, and the uneven landscape didn't cause any trouble but rather made my getaways a snap! Kawashita uses landships which are far too slow to catch up to my advanced, one-person hoverchair. Once I spotted a tank, I was out and away, leaving a bunch of empty barrels behind me. Thankfully, the MANTIS™ Spyglass© really made spotting Kawashitan equipment easy as it made anything red stand out from the other colors. In fact, depending on the angle of the crystal, the spyglass could highlight most ranges of color - a real breakthrough in spying technology! I was also equipped with a sweet pistol that shot extra-large lead bullets which were perfect for making holes in all of Kawashita's barrels ~ DD out
  3. Location: Planet Kaalin, Sector H03 Tags: Land Vehicle Job: Special Forces Log_M_10: Ever since I obtained my latest ride, I have been what professionals call Absent Without Leave. I'm still surprised they haven't fired me by now, but hey, whatever. Whilst zooming around Domwarr, I received another mission: should I choose to accept it. The mission was simple, test a new land speeder. Since I was soooo satisfied with my previous speeder I tested, I was eager to try a bigger, better, and faster speeder! Who wouldn't! What's more, they said they had a new uniform waiting for me. Oh yeah! Unfortunately, when I arrived, I realized what a mistake I had made........ End_Log Log_M_10_1: Okay, maybe that wasn't so bad after all. However, I'll still say I was surprised it made it off the ground..... and that uniform though....... -|- Ace
  4. Location: F03, Forring Tags: MANTIS, spying, land vehicle Double D's log 26: The last few weeks were a blur, but all I could remember was diving, some sort of amazing room, and then I remember appearing back at the MANTIS base.... Must have hit my head or something. Anyway, I was sent to F03 on a spying mission. Apparently Octan started some subtle operations on E01, so I was to see if I could gather any clues from Octan. I was to hack into their speeder computer systems so that we could get inside one of the Octan buildings with the security code. It took a long time to set up a signal that could capture the signals what the Octan speeders were sending. I had to get very close to the zooming speeders to catch a glimpse of a signal and then after a dozen or more speeder scans, I could piece together the signals into one code block that would open up gates and doors to Octan buildings. I liked their speeders...a lot....but I didn't let myself get too distracted from the mission. It only took 5 hours to copy the signal. Sure, I normally get things like this done in an hour, but those speeders......so sleek.... so.... fast! I need one. ~DD out

  8. Location: B08, Greater Direstan Tags: MANTIS, land vehicle Double D's log 20: After last weeks awesome speeder driving, I've now been tasked to drive tools and supplies around the base here. It's a pretty neat vehicle, it can hold lots of tools, pull quite a bit of weight, and even the front tire folds up so it can hang on a rack when we're done using it. Still, it's slow, and kinda boring to drive. Guess I shouldn't have said how much fun driving is and instead have specified I like driving fast vehicles!
  9. Location: B08 Greater Direstan Tags: MANTIS, land vehicle Double D's log 19: Well, the MANTIS strategy discussion on the orbital Space Station 001 was a ton of fun, but now I'm back to speeder testing. The one I'm testing this week is so shiny and sleek. Can't wait to give it a spin! The plains on Greater Direstan are perfect for zooming around just in case the speeders are hard to control. -------------------------------------- Yup! Another speeder! I love making these things. Enjoy!
  10. Location: The Fascini Cluster - E11 Tags: Spaceship, Land Vehicle, Military, Building A quick jump to the surface of Freegate led Octan's acting CEO, John Hannibal, on a much larger and more significant mission to welcome the Merchant Confederacy into Octan's family. Much of Hannibal's recent work would be much easier, as his pool of colonists exponentially rises. New colonists in greater numbers would mean trading networks could take the place of the Mercy Brandy's irregular supply drops. But with more colonists, other threats would present themselves. Zoid slavers, for example, would soon find these soft targets. It was this problem that Hannibal and Callahan were looking to solve in the Fascini Cluster. Most of Octan's pilots were experienced in taking long hauls across desolate space and making smooth landings in alien atmospheres; there had been little need for combat roles as Octan's dominance had always come from procuring more strategic market shares instead of stockpiling bullets. But there were several select pilots that Hannibal knew could lead combat detachments to protect the civilian convoys. After catching a ride on Long's Axle, Hannibal intercepts and takes on a delivery of tech heading out to the very outpost they seek. Their ride is a light space hauler used for navigating between asteroids. While not fit for the greater depths of space, this small rig is incredibly light and therefore maneuverable in the vacuum of space. They will not be able to go far, but their pilot's outpost is just outside of the regular rock formations of the asteroid field. [E11] Asteroid Short-Range Hauler - 1 by Ryan McBryde, on Flickr The outpost was chosen because of it's vicinity to the Fasicini Cluster. A solitary rock, the pilots would not have to compete with other asteroids immediately on takeoff. They could therefore set quicker and more accurate attack vectors, should the main station or outlying miners come under attack. Callahan chuckled a little as Hannibal told them where they were going, but he wouldn't say just yet what was funny. [E11] Asteroid Outpost - 1 by Ryan McBryde, on Flickr Finding the outpost empty, the two unload their cargo and inspect the Octan hardsuit they came to resupply. Their cargo was a number of new attachments that would allow their pilot to make more extensive repairs on-site. This current model was good for repairing scrapes in the hulls of both ship and habitat, but it would need finer implements to keep their ships active longer. [E11] Asteroid Outpost by Ryan McBryde, on Flickr Callahan was especially eager to see the inside of the outpost, so the two headed inside to wait for and discuss their pilot. The pilot, Ziggy, flies an O.S.F. 1983 Vandura, the Pentacle. It is a tight and highly maneuverable fighter ideal for the Fascini Cluster but vulnerable in open space due to it's speed. While quick to accelerate, the low overall speed of this craft make it easy prey outside of the asteroid belt. The extremely advanced Octan stealth technology, developed by Executive Pombe, can provide a great deal of protection from this, as long as the pilot can avoid drawing unwanted attention to himself. [E11] Octan Stealth Fighter - 1 by Ryan McBryde, on Flickr Before Ziggy even returns, the two have already agreed that he would make an ideal pilot to lead the security network on Crofter's Ridge, the first destination for the new colonists. However, Callahan insists: "But, you have to provide better accommodations for your pilots. First, I want them living with the colonists whenever possible. And second, don't make them live in a hollowed out piece of space-whale dung, like you're doing with poor Ziggy. John, there's a reason why this 'rock' is outside the main cluster... it's not a rock..." C&C appreciated.

  13. Location: A08, Crentium Tags: Land Vehicle Double D's log 18: I've been testing a lot of speeders lately. This latest one, the MANTI-Ray® Speeder is the most fun to drive, and that's partly because it goes faster and hovers a bit higher than the others, making it better for navigating through rocks and doing bigger jumps! The MANTI-Ray® Speeder also has the ability to be remote-controlled, though there are still too many "quirks" to be effective in combat, let alone controlling more than one at the same time. Depending on the success of the MMT® line, the development team will either further its efforts to expand the remote-controlled technology to include hovering speeders or stick with non-hovering vehicles. ~ DD out ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Of the speeders that I have made, this one was the most fun to build, mostly because of the front shaping.
  14. Location: C10 Marden Tags: Land Vehicle, Military, Exploration Double D's log 17: It's another week on Marden, but this time I get to test out a new kind of remote-controlled weapons system. I get to drive a sweet tank around in the snow and blow up things (mostly snow). The tank is part of a new lineup that MANTIS is doing - MANTIS Mini Tanks (MMT). Apparently you can control many of these tanks at once. What's also neat is that there are cameras on each tank can be seen on the controller's screen. I can definitely see these being very useful should MANTIS need a bunch of heavy-duty inexpensive tanks that pack a punch! This tank in particular comes equipped with a snow plow just in case. I wonder what other accessories it can have... ~ DD out --------------------------------------------------------------------- I like how compact the tank is, and I'm really pleased with the treads marks.

  16. Location: C10 Marden Tags: Land Vehicle Double D's Log 16: Well, the Kawashitan Commander got away because I didn't realize we were so close to a Kawashitan military base. I narrowly escaped on the X-P1 speeder. In fact, the entire last week was a close one as MANTIS barely got the upper hand. The good news though is that A08 was in MANTIS hands. I guess I'll have to find that commander some other time, though we did find out why Kawashita was trying to go through D04. Anyway, I am now on Marden - a cold, snowy, rocky planet. It's just me and a prototype speeder that's supposed to be able to hover very close to the ground when needed and skip across the ice and snow. It even has a transformation function if I ever feel like going really fast...which is most of the time for me. Though while recording this log I'm in the default mode. My mission this week is pretty much cover as much ground as I can. MANTIS installed some M.A.P. device that basically draws a map on where I've been and does a rough scan for non-natural materials within 100 meters. Basically, I drive and it creates a map and locates things like Kawashita bases, drones, and the like. Since I can go so fast, even if Kawashita spots me, they won't be able to catch me (or track me). It is quite the fun ride. Even though the speeder reaches high speeds, it is equipped with a auto-stabilizer system that keeps the driver balanced even if doing a steep banking turn. It's awesome! I'm also supposed to be reading this domination for dummies book. I don't get how it is supposed to help me, because the first chapter is all about taking vacations, drinking milkshakes, and having supposedly reliable robots do all the work! How could any corporation gain an advantage by doing that! Perhaps driving around counts as a "vacation?" I guess I'll see. ~ DD out ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm really pleased with how the speeder turned out! I think it's neat that it slightly resembles a dogsled in its second mode since it's designed for snow. It is fun to swoosh too!

  18. Location: A08 Crentium Tags: MANTIS, land vehicle AG: The Chase Continues by David FNJ, on Flickr Double D's log 15: My plan to chase the Kawashitan commander off the ship worked! I managed to follow him through another gate, and eventually we crash landed in a remote place of startling colors. Each ship had its own X1-P1 Land Speeder, so the chase continued. A few moments ago I shot down the commander's speeder, and now he (hopefully) won't escape again... These X1-P1 Land Speeders are pretty nifty! I think I'll keep it if I can find a MANTIS base on this planet. ~ DD out ----------------------------------------------------------------- Some of you might remember seeing this a few weeks ago on Flickr. 21. Location: F03, Forring Tags: MANTIS, Land Vehicle, Military Double D's Log 37: So since I've been around a while, some of MANTIS corp. wanted me to look at some new experimental vehicles. There were lots of excellent ones, but one in particular stood out to me. It looked liked an ancient battle wheel or something. Sure it could truck through just about anything, but its defenses were disgraceful. Any hover bike could zoom around it and immobilize the thing. Anyway, I gave it a grade of E (in the A-F scale). ~ DD out ----------------------------------------- So yeah, I'm not exactly happy with this, I had something cooler in mind, but I didn't have the time to do it. The wheels turned out pretty cool, and it's amusing to roll around and shoot at things, but it just doesn't look that good to be honest. 24. Location: Jurin II - E02 Tags: Spaceship, Land vehicle, Civil Building The Jin Homestead Octan is at War The Empty Homesteads on Jurin II Deep into the trees of Jurin II, Mabel leads Octan Pilot John Hannibal to the Jurinians' secret holdout against the brutal M.A.N.T.I.S. invasion. The path winds between the trees, up and down through breaks in the canopy, and silently watched by alien sentries. Finally, they arrive. The canopy opens so wide and deep that John, a spaceman, feels agoraphobic for a short moment. Small huts cling to the sides of large trunks with yards made of densely compacted leaves. The sounds of children playing nearly bring john to tears as they approach the town center. "My God, Mabel..." "Yes, John... I know." Ma Jin was waiting for them in front of the town pavilion. The colonists were listening to reports from the front transmitted ahead of their arrival by Mabel. It was a grim account: The underhanded scheming from the Council of Five (1)(2); malevolent and secretive collusion with supposed peaceful corporations (1); rampant terrorist attacks (1)(2)(3); senseless murder and destruction of property (1)(2)(3)(4)(5); the recent deaths of thousands of Octan sailors (1)(2)(3). The mood was somber, fearful, resilient, and MAD. [O - E02] Holdout - 4 by Ryan McBryde, on Flickr John dismounted the re-purposed M.A.N.T.I.S. speeder and walked to Ma. Her belly had a very distinctive bump and his heart sunk... "I... I'm so sorry about George..." "Oh John, thank you... he was a good man, and he will be missed..." "It's all my fault, Ma. I'm the Neville Chamberlain of our time. I let the wolves in and put you all in grave, grave danger." "John, we are on the frontier of space. Everybody here knew what they were getting into, including me and George. I don't want to hear any regret from you. I want to know what we're going to do about it." "I just don't know, Ma. Everything has turned upside down so quickly. Only a few weeks ago I was picking out the fields for my homestead. Before that I had already flown through more space than I knew was possible. I'm tired, Ma, and I don't know how much fight I have left in me." "Is your family safe?" "Yes, thankfully, the fighting broke out before they shipped over. But, I'm afraid I'll never see them now." "I'm sorry John." "John... this baby needs a father." "What does that mean, Ma?" "Stay here with us, be my husband and this baby's father, don't go back to that war." "Is that what George would do?" "I know George, Ma. He wouldn't rest until the skies were clear above this child's head. And neither will you or I." "There's a ship I'll have pulled up. It's no use to us here because it's too fast for our routes. Take it. And come back to us when that horrible menace is gone." "You're a good woman, Ma." As night falls and he finishes the last of his meetings with the Jurinian colonists, John embraces Ma for one last time before turning to the starfighter. The route back seems longer than before, but soon enough John opens up the engines and back into the sky. O.S.F. Green Scrambler by Ryan McBryde, on Flickr C&C appreciated

Ocean seemed to be moving its weapons around the planet, and I was to find out where such weapons were being moved to, and why. I came across an inexperienced bunch who were leading a small automatic cannon that used Octan maps and sensors to move and fire at targets. Ha, obviously their scanners aren’t that great when trying to find MANTIS spies. I followed the presumed new Octan recruits through the ruins of a MANTIS lab that was destroyed when Octan first took Jurin II many months beforehand. It provided nice cover, and even creeped out the Octan recruits! “I feel like we’re being watched” “I know the feeling, but it’s by Octan satellites, so we’re safe…” “But MANTIS agents are everywhere!” “I haven’t seen any, have you?” “No, and that’s what worries me! We’ve never seen one, and they’ve slowed our operations down more than we expected!” “Well, if everyone does his part and brings our weapons to the more fortified locations instead of trying to mine in many places on the planet, not even the MANTIS spies will be able to stop our advance. Plus, our fleet is waiting on E01 for when we finally take back this planet from those bugs.” “But what if we don’t get all of our weapons back to the fortified mining facilities? Our fleet can’t penetrate this system until we have a secure place to let them land!” *scratching noises* “Um…wait! Did you hear that?” “Stop teasing me!” “No, for real this time!” I fired up an old generator that sent an eerie hum throughout the ruins, and the sound could not be traced back because the noise bounced off of the broken walls and equipment in every which direction. *eerie humming noises* “Let’s hurry and get out of here! It’s said the ghost of Big Sal lives in these ruins!” “Really?!” *CRASH* “RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!" It’s too late Octan, it’s too late. ~ DD out Set remake of Shipwreck Defense for MANTIS pirate week! I expanded on the ruins a bit to make it more interesting. http://brickset.com/...ipwreck-Defence
