  1. Hi folks, it’s that time of year again already! I’ve had a hectic year so apologies for the silence since last year - we’ve added 2 new categories (one for purist builds as a user suggested here, and a “build challenge”), and entries will open on Sunday again. Look forward to seeing what everyone has been building again! - The Brick Train Awards are back for their fifth year, with 17 categories to enter your models in. From steam, diesel and electric locomotive categories to wagons, scenery and even a “purist” category for those builders who don’t use custom parts such as wheels and rods. The awards started in 2020, and to celebrate their 5th year a new “build challenge” category allows builders to submit a new, railway-related physical or digital LEGO build which fits within a cube of 16 studs. Each entry is shared on the Brick Train Awards social accounts too, so it’s worth following on Instagram and Facebook for a month full of LEGO train goodness in your feeds! Entering your models is free, and can be done from 1st - 30th September 2024 at bricktrainawards.com where information on each category is listed. Winners are chosen by a panel of judges from the international LEGO train community, and prizes for the global winners are kindly provided by Trixbrix.eu.

Bricklink page: https://www.bricklink.com/v3/designer-program/series-4/1184/Wild-West-Train With the possibility of at least three Trains-related sets through the BL Designer Program, I figured it deserved its own discussion thread! 2024 is shaping up to be a good year for ever-patient Trains fans. --- Series 5 and Series 6 contain no accepted Trains-related sets.
  3. Happy 2024 everyone. I figured that as it's now three days into the New Year it's time for a new discussion thread! So here goes with the same old history of the past few years: Standardised Train Sets 2024 ? 60423 Tram & Station ? 2023 21344 Orient Express 76423 Hogwarts Express & Hogsmeade Station 2022 60335 Train Station 60336 Freight Train 60337 High Speed Passenger Train 76405 Hogwarts Express Collector's Edition* 10308 Holiday Main Street (trolley/tram) 2021 N/A 2020 10277 Crocodile Locomotive 40370 Trains 40th Anniversary Set (GWP) 60271 Main Square (tram) 2019 70424 Ghost Train Express 71044 Disney Train 2018 75955 Hogwarts Express 60197 Passenger Train 60198 Cargo Train** 60205 Tracks 60238 Switch Tracks *not L-gauge **except Europe Sets with a strikethrough are retired. Italicised sets are ones with expected imminent retirement. No actual rumours or information yet on any 'standard' 2024 trains, though this should be the place to discuss them. Fingers crossed it won't be another empty year like 2021 but I guess we wait and see! I was expecting 60198 Cargo Train to be retired back in 2022, but it seems it has replaced the 3677/60098 slot as a second available cargo train to complement 60336. Bricklink Designer Program Separately, several trains-related BL Designer Program sets have been chosen for crowdfunding, some which I'm certainly looking forward to: Series 1 (Crowdfunding February 2024, Production and Shipping July 2024): Old Train Engine Shed by Mind_the_Brick Series 2 (Refining Finalist Details September 1st 2023 - May 1st 2024, Crowdfunding June 2024, Production and Shipping November 2024): Brick Cross Train Station by brickester Logging Railway by ties25 All require 3,000 preorders to be made and have a maximum of 20,000. I can't remember how successful preorders for Studgate were bur that can probably lead to some kind of predictions for this. Series 5 (2025) has another train set in it. I'm interested to see how these play out and how popular they are. I think it could be quite an interesting year. Discuss below, and @JopieK maybe pin the topic at the top?
  4. Hello all, I'm trying to find a way to create a power/data coupling between train cars that can be connected/disconnected like the car coupling magnets. Has anyone done anything like this? Background: This is so that I can supply power and control to LED lights (and maybe other devices) in the cars being pulled behind the engine, which will provide the power and control unit (Arduino based MCU) I've tried using a micro USB magnetic connector, but they are too bulky and don't flex easily enough for this. I'd love to find out if anyone has engineered anything similar. Thanks in advance! Arlo
  5. This weekend the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland are relaunching their Class 141 loco B142 after an overhaul (details here if you're interested, and more on the loco itself here), so I figured it was time to share my rendition of it. As with all my 12v stock it's 6 wide, which limits the detail that can be included! I had figured out a way to brick build the curved lines on the front, but that would have left a very flat front of the cab - Irish diesels have an awful lot of flat planes to the cab ends so the compromise was to use some slopes but keep the orange and white lines straight. I'm getting more used to stickers, and am reasonably happy with how the stickers on the 2x2x6 windscreens came out to give the three front windows. Overall, I'm really happy with how it turned out even if the details I did get in don't accurately match the original. Anyway, here are the pics, starting with my main reference image. 142_01 Side view: 01 The doors on the real thing are the diagonal panel on the back of the cab, 1 stud wide slopes on my model, so I created doors on the side while staying as true to the design as possible - a minifig has to be able to fit through the door! Front view: 04 And the classic 3/4 view: 02 The pics were all taken on a stored module of my bigger layout, hence the wooden sky in one or two of them! Lastly, a short video of it running on a temporary loop recently: B142 Hope you all enjoy it.
  6. Hello all! I'm back with a new British loco and its the SR V class, more commonly referred to as the Schools class due to the class being named after various public schools along the SR rail network. The class has a power classification of 5P and was one of if not THE most powerful 4-4-0 ever built! sr schools class by Snazz04, on Flickr sr schools class 2 by Snazz04, on Flickr Here are some images. If you want to see more please ask so! I'm thinking of recolouring it in different liveries, maybe even adding some prints. Built in 1:45 scale.
  7. Hi everyone, I present to you my second version of the Renfe S-130 like Ferro-Friki did some time ago. I wanted to remake this train that I made first in 2018 with not the best result so I now made this version in 7 studs. LEGO Renfe S-130 DEF [MOC] by Imanol, en Flickr The set is heavily detailed even in the rear of the power cars and end cars LEGO Renfe S-130 Testeros Interiores [MOC] by Imanol, en Flickr I have made a reduced train set of only 7 cars instead of the 11 that has in real life but it has one of each of the different cars that form the real train with detailed interiors. First the "Preferente" end and "Preferente" LEGO Renfe S-130 Lateral Extremo Preferente [MOC] by Imanol, en Flickr LEGO Renfe S-130 Lateral Preferente [MOC] by Imanol, en Flickr The interiors of "Preferente" cars LEGO Renfe S-130 Interior Preferente [MOC] by Imanol, en Flickr The "Preferente" adapted car and it´s interior LEGO Renfe S-130 Lateral Preferente PMR [MOC] by Imanol, en Flickr LEGO Renfe S-130 Interior Preferente PMR [MOC] by Imanol, en Flickr The cafe car and it´s interior LEGO Renfe S-130 Lateral Cafeteria [MOC] by Imanol, en Flickr LEGO Renfe S-130 Interior cafeteria [MOC] by Imanol, en Flickr And the Turista cars which are the same as preferente but with 2+2 seating arrangement LEGO Renfe S-130 Lateral Remolques Turista [MOC] by Imanol, en Flickr LEGO Renfe S-130 Lateral Remolques Turista [MOC] by Imanol, en Flickr And now that I presented it I want to ask for help to build it as it will be my first lego train in real life. The car coupling mechanism that I have installed is only for aesthetical purposes and will not work in real life. Another problem is that i have seen many models in which all of the rear of the locomotive or power car pivots and I don´t know if it could be necesary to do in this case. Lastly I want to know how to motorize it, being so long I would suppose I would need the two power cars to provide power but I don´t know. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this project as much as I enjoyed designing it
  8. Hi guys, Here's my latest MOC - Grand Central Terminal! Hope you enjoy the detail jam-packed into this MOC. It's up on Ideas. Dozens of photos and a time lapse video here Grand Central Terminal on IDEAS. PS - Why is the max total size for an image upload set at 100KB??? At that limit, I can barely get one thumbnail in.
  9. Its time to start thinking about Brickworld Chicago 2018 is only 4 months away. What topics would most interest you for the Train Round Table? Here are just a few possibilities... or suggest one - Third Party tracks options for wide curves, turnouts, metal rails (Like BrickTracks, 4D Bricks, ME Models, etc) ? - The new Lego Power Functions 2.0 standard ? - Third Party power options (like PFX Brick, S-Brick, etc) ? - Building Narrow Gauge ( using either narrow gauge or new Roller Coaster track ) ? - Rechargeable battery options (alternatives to the Lego LIPO battery) - BMW
  10. Hi everyone, I recently was holding my Horizon express train and noticed something. The cars (so not the engine) were very light, even so if I didn't know better, would think there weren't a lot of pieces involved. I had the 2006 High speed passenger train 7897 and noticed also that the car was very, very light. Same with the other two recent passenger trains, and the passenger car from the Emerald Night. On the other hand, as a kid a friend of mine had some cars of the Santa Fe Super Chief, and they were kinda heavy (in my memory that is) compared to my own 7897. Looking up the instructions of some of the older trains I also noticed it almost seems more pieces were involved. I'm kinda sad by this, since I think the cars of a train are just as important as the main engine of it. So my question is, does anyone who owns several trains of several eras also notice the difference in wheigt between the passenger cars? And what does that mean for you?
  11. Hello, I always wanted to have a LEGO train as a kid and in (I think) 2008 I bought 7897 passenger train. But because I always wanted cargo train and as I have nicer looking 60051 I decided to rebuild 7897. I tried few times to find any inspiration as the 7897 has specific train base (6x30) but I started to believe that nobody wanted to "play" with it and couldn't find any MOCs. So I tried to create some kind of clone of BNSF loco, but let me say that it is the beginning I hope :) Anyway I am sharing my progress so far and would love to see your creations/modifications to either my creature or your own with 7897 train base. Pls, feel free to download LDD file and modify it. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ryrniph1evketqi/my train white no trainbase.lxf?dl=0 Looking fwd to see your MOCs

It's 48x48, or 2,304 studs. Most of which is water. And a prebuilt ship. So, uh, if it doesn't qualify, I'll understand. C&C appreciated!
  13. I think it's high time we started a 2018 Lego Trains thread after a pretty disappointing 2017. 2018 has to be an improvement right? Quite a few people seem to believe that there is a "pattern" to the City train releases and according to this pattern we should expect a new Passenger Train, Cargo Train and Train Station in 2018. @Duq explained the pattern very well on the 2017 Trains thread. In addition to these expected releases, there is also a rumour that the next modular building could be a central train station. Personally I find that a bit hard to believe but you never know!
  14. Hello all, A week ago our LUG had a big group layout displayed at LEGOWorld 2017. The layout was a collaboration of @aawsum, @alois, Moos and me. LEGOWorld Utrecht 2017 by Erwin, on Flickr LEGOWorld Utrecht 2017 by Erwin, on Flickr LEGOWorld Utrecht 2017 by Erwin, on Flickr LEGOWorld Utrecht 2017 by Erwin, on Flickr LEGOWorld Utrecht 2017 by Erwin, on Flickr More pictures are available at my Flickr album. PS. mods, is there any way this can be posted in the Train forum too? I don't want to crosspost but I think this concerns both topics equally.
  15. I'm trying to drag a very good builder of trains to EB and everything related to railway construction, pavlo, which lives in the Russian Lego forum. I obtained permission from him, I will now publish his works here. They are valuable in that they cover a diverse railroad park of the USSR / Russia, the work is done in the same style and at different scales (in 6, 8 and 10 widths), have an LDD file, and those who wish can collect these, modelism in the part of railway. Let me know if you are interested. Thanks in advance. First of all, a picture with several of his works. Gradually I will replenish this topic with new models from pavlo
  16. I was attending a scientific conference last week and one of the speakers gave a talk on the use of databases and big data. The used lego trains as an analogy of the database "engine" and the data payload. I spent much of the talk trying to identify the trains (photos), they had. Certainly a lot from the 12V era plus a number of variants on the hobby train and a a few MOCs. Sometimes it is nice to see that I am not only person with a huge collection of Lego trains (and technic)
  17. Got these pictures from the Lego .com's 20th anniversary site last year., which sadly does not exist any more. I managed to get the Wild Western, Time Cruisers, Explorians, Pirates, Technic, Castle, 9v Train, Aqua Zone, and Free Style ones. Took me a while due to having to play a game to get all 9 one at a time, with several repeats! Links to the bigger pictures at my Flickr are in the links below. Red Alert! It's a Aquasharks' Spy Shark (6135)! Incoming Dark Forest Bandit Ambush (number 6024)! I honestly don't know what it is, but it seems like something from the Freestyle theme. Watch out for Volcano Island! (Pirates 6248) Explorien Starship (set number 6982) sets off toward the vast unknown! This model depicted here is Technic set 8628, 3-in-1 car. Time Cruisers, featuring Dr. Cyber and Timmy in the Hypno Cruiser / Navigator (6942 / 1853)! Classic 9v trains and town sets, too many to count! Sheriff's Lockup at Gold City Junction at high noon or else! (sets 6755 and 6765) These pictures are all from 1996, the year Lego .com opened for business, and are not mine at all... I just thought you guys might like it!
  18. I tried to recreate the bus from 10259 and then thought it would be neat to also have a different livery, somewhat more like the English busses. And here is the render of the 'original' version. And here they are together. The drivers seem to have a casual chat about the weather road conditions or some other driver related thing :). Kudos to msx80 for his render tool! Works perfect on macOS Sierra, I used it to render the images. In here I have made some comments on what parts are different from 10259. I needed to guess for some parts, but I came quite close I think.
  19. Hi, i just saw the 50 years of track set - a neat thing, but probably the best item of it is the 4 wide Metroliner. Therefore i did wonder if i could do the Horizon Express in the same scale and perhaps motorize it. So i also started the Metroliner first, thought of ways of making a super small boogie still with functionality for a motor to attach to. ATM its rubberbands around bushes for transaction, yet im very unsure if this were to work in a real build if the boogie turns. I used gears as wheels for the motor unit (if you look close into the pic). If any of you have motorized a 4 wide train without using standard sized train wheels, id be thrilled to hear/see about it. 4 wide Horizon Express by Ron Dayes, auf Flickr 4 wide Metroliner by Ron Dayes, auf Flickr
  20. Hey Lego Train Tech community! I was wondering if anyone professional is doing commission builds at a fair price? Best Regards, Mads - DELETE IF NOT ALLOWED -
  21. Hi My name is Stephan Niks from the Netherlands and new here. At the moment very busy. but in the near future I will post my designs here for discussion My interest: trains, modulars and LEGO ideas
  22. Hello all - new to Eurobricks and Lego Trains, I just wanted to share with you my rise from the Dark Ages and what I have been building. Last Christmas time I went to my first ever Lego Train Show hosted by the Northern Illinois Lego Train Club. I had been slowly getting back into Legos at that time since my sister introduced me to LDD. After the show I was hooked. I did not ask for, but was given the Emerald Night for Christmas and was so struck by how awesome it is and how it connected my love for trains to my love for Lego's. Then later in the year I got the Maersk Train for my birthday then the Blue Cargo train. I have been building in a fury!! I am most interested in North American Steam but have built some diesels as well. The flickr link is to a gallery of my steam collection I have a whole bunch of rail cars and some buildings and MOW vehicles as well. I am hoping one day to build these with real bricks and have a layout (really a big yard, engine shed, and round-house) and be a part of a train club. But until I have the space and funds, these LDD creations are the only way I can express my passion at this time. Anyway, enjoy the North American Steam! I did build a Class C Shay truck but since I borrowed so much from the original creator Stephen Pakbaz I decided not to share it. https://flic.kr/s/aHsknDng5z ALCO
  23. Hello again, after so many requests to show some wagons for my GHH G7.1 - finally, here they are! Both wagons are in 1:33 scale. They feature detachable roofs and detailed interior. Although LEGO's large drive wheels are identical in diameter, I used BBB L drivers once again, as the counterweight on the LEGO wheels made them inappropriate for the use on cars. The first one is a third-class passenger car for the GHH pitmen: The interior: A rendering of the interior, showing the... eh... "silent little place", as we say in German: Furthermore, I built an old-fashioned little passenger car with brakeman's cab. I modeled this one after a photo I happened to see on ebay, showing a GHH G7.1 pulling such a wagon, and I have to say that I am quite proud of the result. Sadly, I didn't manage to get the mentioned photo, so I can't show it here. Another rendering: As usual, you can find larger versions of the images here. Last but not least, here is a video link showing the whole train running. Hope you liked it, best regards Sven
  24. This is for discussion of train storage systems (or lack thereof if you are unlucky). I'll start with my storage / transport solution: If anyone has wondered how I get my trains to and fro all over the place, here is my secret: cardboard paper boxes. Fourteen (14) of them from all different places and companies. I tried asking for the empty ones at the Office Max / Office Depot stores (They are all owned by the Staples company now, believe it or not!) but they can't sell or give them away due to some corporate policy. I had been getting them from my dad's work, and more recently, different offices I have been to / worked at. They are them cut-down by Xacto knife and hot glued back together with opening lid and section dividers, which allows for me to store trains a number of different combinations. Most of the passenger cars are 24 studs long, with 1 studs of overhang over each coupler. However, the Spirit of Legoredo is an older 28 stud long design, and most steam locos are longer than 30 studs. Nevertheless, I have maximized space whenever possible. Below you will see several variations on these boxes, and maybe they will help you with your train storage problems. Forgotten GS-6 Daylight 4-8-4 and Meramec river Runner passenger train Alco FA / FB (not shown) and Spirit of Legoredo passenger train Generic six car freight train (not shown - on display on my layout) Mikado 2-8-2 steam freight loco and EMD E-unit cab + booster units American 4-4-0 and early passenger train Now how do YOU store or transport your trains?!?
  25. Here is my 2016 layout, with most of the items already built, but some still remain to be purchased. Here is a complete list of what's on my tables, not including trains or automobiles because they can be rotated on or off the layout very easily. All of this sits on three very carefully arranged 30 inch by 72 inch tables. Now for the reality check: This is the current state of my trains and town layout. I don't have any other space for things on the table, as below the tables and in the closet is full of Lego bins, either color sorted in slide-out drawers, former model chunks in bins, or put together in customized paper boxes. Here we see the entire layout and compared to the nice chart I posted earlier, it's bit of a mess. The water models area has a police station and Cloud Cuckoo Land in it, and the left hand town area next to the station has my clock radio and assorted stuff for models not yet built. The rail yard is mostly put together, with my streamlined 4-8-2 steamer and diesel PA / PB units getting ready for their day of work. The steam loco is arriving at the coaling / water towers to refuel while the ALCO units are going to be switched onto the mainline to pull it's assigned express train. (The train is not on the table to save space and keep it from getting too dusty.) The town is mostly there, with the streetcars rounding the curves onto and off the main street. The sections only needs two 90 degree (X) crossings to be finished. Now you may be thinking it's really bad, but it is a lot better than it was, and still has a ways to go. It's all about baby steps toward the larger goal of having my dream layout, something I have always wanted since seeing my Dad's layout when I was 5 or 6. For those wondering, here's my ideal layout's items.... most of them I have already, but a half-dozen or so I don't own yet. This layout contains the following track sections: 3 - Right switches 3 - Left switches 62 - Straight segments 46 - Curved segments 2 - 90 degree rail crossing (still needed) 1 - Double rail crossover This layout contains the following train facilities: - Truss bridge - Ironwood Train station -Trolley Stop (still needed) - Water and coal refueling stations - Double stall train shed This layout contains the town buildings: - Sinister Victorian Mansion - Stone Bank - Western Saloon - Thunder's office - Town Hall (still needed) - Military Surplus store - Tudor style House - Model Rocket store - Tavern - Train club meeting house - Railway Headquarters (still needed) This layout contains the following miscellaneous other items: - Tramp steam ship - Lighthouse - Car ferry - Leisure vessel (still needed) - Rural Cabin Comments and feedback would be really appreciated!
