Umm, just to get this thread a little off-topic, does anyone have a good picture that I could use for a sail in my latest MOC. It's sort of a Viking/Piratey Skeleton ship, so what I want is a simple design like the one on the new Viking ship coming out. I want it to be red aswell and something like a skull or a dragon something like that, that is one or two colours.

Actually this post is also on topic! 2 in one day! That's miraculous.

I've got a .jpgs of the flags of all the major Pirates of the Caribbean. They have skulls and bones in their design, but using one of these flags would be historically incorrect. But you could modify it somehow to suit your Viking ship.

I think what you guys are missing is that I'm saying that a viking (in the sense of the word as used at their time) is the same thing as a pirate.  snefroe, you're perfectly right about the trading and settling, but that's not what vikings did.  They were only called vikings when they raided and pillaged.  When they were trading, or just generally at any other time, they were called Northumbrians, Danes, noormen (thanks!), etc.  Viking is also irrespective of culture and it is merely a mistake of our society that we consider it a term that indicates a specific culture.

Back then, 'viking' was basically the word for 'pirate'.  So as well as you could say 'a viking is a type of pirate', I could say 'a pirate is a type of viking'. ;)  Of course, there are more commonly recalled subsets of both - when someone says 'Viking', the 'horn-helmed' longboat-rowing raiders of Scandinavia come to mind.  When someone says 'pirate', the eye-patched commandeerers of the Caribbean come to mind.  Still, both are irrespective of culture and essentially mean the same thing.

Perhaps it would be best if our historian continue this debate. I don't know enough about Vikings to make an educated arguement, but I can still argue for arguements sake.

Well I finally built it, but I couldnt find my digital camera :'( so I used my regular cam and used up a roll of film :) , but I need to get the film developed, which will take a day or two, so dont expect to see pics soon, sry :'(

But I'll leave you off with this, the ship is called "The Red Barron II" and it is red and black. the crew is 11 plus 2 prisoners (including another thats not quite a human) it also has a sail that bloodyjay gave me and the ship has two floors and a small third floor platform and well, I'll try and get pic's asap.

The history of my "Red Barron I+II" ship's originated about 2 years ago I made the original... but it sucked,... it sucked balls and in time it got a bit well... demolished, but one day I noticed it in a corner of my room and decided to rebuild it top to bottom and sure enough I finally finished tonight, so remember this moment kids for the rest of your lives!

What kind of mini-figures are you using?

Well, he did say it was a skeleton Viking ship, so I'd say Viking could be a safe assumption.

Now what did I say about assumptions earlier?

He wrote "It's sort of a Viking/Piratey Skeleton ship",

That's why I asked what it turned out to be.

Does anybody have any Pirate MOCs to show me?

Does turning a SES into a ship-wreck count as a MOC? I haven't "done" it yet but I've decided that that's the way I will integrate my SES into my town/train-layout. It'll act as some famous sunken ship and divers and submarines will swarm around it and search for a treasure or something...

Its very interesting that you decided to post in this thread Hobbes. This was my second thread which I created before we had a Castle and Pirate Forum. Back then it was just the Castle Forum. But ever since the rename this thread has become somewhat redundant since all Pirate MOCs went straight into there. Maybe this thread should be closed but I just don't have the heart to do it!

Anyways, turning the Skulls Eye Schooner into a ship wreck MOC seems like an interesting concept. Although the ship wreck concept has been used in 6296 Ship Wrecked and 6281 Pirates Perilous Pitfall, your modern day exploration twist is fascinaitng! Get to work on it right away!
