As you advance, the darkness prevents you from seeing too far in front of you. You can see that the floor is not damaged. Rather, it's the half-finished floor of a corridor leading into a new tunnel. You see fresh pickaxe marks on the rock walls, and you hear growls from further down.

OoC: Free Hits still work the same as they have throughout the quest: he'll target the earliest untargeted hero in the Order that he can. If you're not the first in the Order, then yes, he's going to go for someone else.
