TheLegoDr Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Well, no wonder people are upset about the size. It has 000 pieces! But seriously, it is a bit small. I realize, that might lower price point, but most people don't MOC. I'd think they want to sell a playset as their first goal. If people see MOC potential, that is on them and will buy more as they see fit. Some of the colored pieces may work for something else, but I will pass. Granted I pass on all CITY/Creator stuff, outside of WV and Modulars. My daughter really liked the bike shop though. Someone brought one to a LUG meeting. It looked decent, but I can think of a lot of other things to spend that kind of money on. Quote
lightningtiger Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Unreasonable expectations, probably. The rumoured price should have indicated that it wouldn't be the same size (and therefore detail/complexity) as the Bike and Café shops. It shouldn't be the same price as the bike shop/cafe. If it is then this new set will not sell at 100 bucks AU, it only has two minifigs, no vehicle.....except a scooter and only one shop not two ? Quote
finnbricker Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 To me, the Toy and Grocery Shop is a big disappointment. Whereas the bike shop included great architectural details (mostly the window designs) and was well suited for modular conversion, the toy store looks just like something a kid would moc. Basically white and sand green bricks and sand yellow windows. The roof decoration is the only exception, otherwise it's just bricks on bricks, no details, no window designs, nada. Of course the price gave some hints about the size of the set, but come on, this house is 8 x 10 studs. Far smaller than the residential CREATOR houses. To me, the price seems expensive. I suppose my disappointment mostly lies in the fact that I had hoped for something in the bike shop style, so I could mod it into a modular. No luck here – maybe 2016? :( Quote

The reason why people express disappointment seems to me to be their unwarranted expectations - the set is rumoured to hit a particular price, a price which indicates pretty clearly the size/scope of the set. Yet people geared themselves up for . . . well, who knows what. A modular done with fewer elements, or something. I have no idea how this set has 'no details', it seems to me rife with them. Quote
CityBuilder Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 I think it's cute, and fills cities massive lack of shops fairly well much like the last. I'm glad they're doing this as well. Quote
Rob1321 Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Very disappointed. Both the Beach Hut and Toy Grocery shop look like trash. They seem too European (no offense) or I don't even know how to describe it. Just ugh. Quote
TheLegGodt Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 I'm excited by the beach hut though. More surfboards for my surfshop, plus the nice dark blue slopes... Can you point me towards photos I have searched but do not find... Does anyone know more about the 2 alternative builds? They are hard to make out but seem to be closed on all angles. Could the main build be an open-backed combo of the toy AND grocery shop and the alternative builds offer either a more complete toy OR grocery shop? I wonder if TLG intends us AFOLs who want more Modular-looking houses to buy 2 of these sets to build both alternative structures... If that were the case then that would be a compromise I would be willing to live with provided the price is in proportion. Quote
jfbat Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 It seems to me that Creator is where we're getting the Town buildings we keep asking for. Branding them as Town may force TLG to set them afire and add yet another Fire ATV, but branding them as Creator just lets them stand as is. The last sentence made me giggle... But I agree with you, it seems that these new Creator buldings are harking back to the Town buildings of yesteryear. Especially that yellow beach hut thing, it's back to the 70's! I've hade quite something to say about this year's bike shop & café, but you know what? I bought it (at 20 euro below the RRP) and despite quite elaborate plans to MOD them (especially the bike shop), there's a good chance they'll end up in my city unmodded after all. Yes, they are smaller than the Modular buildings, but the modulars are actually buildings of the larger kind anyway. Townhouses (eg the house with Pet Shop) are way bigger than the more rural modern buildings in real life too, so the scale somehow works for me in the end. Might ad a little workshop to the bikeshop, but we'll see. What puts me off a bit about the toy shop is that open back. For playability purposes that works very well, but as a "model" it's not my thing. I also think it's a "foldable", and I guess it might be cheaper than this year's shop-set. I'll just wait for the official release and make my mind up then. Quote
EvilBlackSheep Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Can you point me towards photos I have searched but do not find... Sure, I looked at it through this link someone posted in the previous page : The other Creator building can be seen at http://www.familiens...trandhuette.jpg . Quote

These sets are quite cheap compared to modulars and very useful to populate layouts Quote
ItsaBRICKS Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Has anyone heard anything about actual homes like the Family House? Quote
wooootles Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 A CREATOR town set with buildings much smaller than CITY buildings... that's a first, especially from a line that once looked good and proportional back in the day next to the Cafe Corners and green Grocers. Back in the day CREATOR sets didn't need to be bought in pairs to look up to par FRIENDS retail building sets look more substantial. Quote

Friends buildings are starting to look attractive to me as options since Creator sets seem to have dropped in consistent quality and price Quote
Dorayaki Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 (edited) I like the new beach house. Though the buildings aren't that innovative (similiar with 5766), the color palette is refreshing. Looks like LEGO would continue the 2-floor building series. The first building is familiar, the other two looks awesome and are definitely great additions to a modern city. lightningtiger Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 I love both sets.....actually the beach house reminds me of the classic town houses of the late 1970's. The toy shop & grocer look better open like in the box art......but man, that's three sets so I can make all three shop fronts. Everyone knows how much the tiger loves making shop fronts ! Quote

This would give 2 buildings with a path or courtyard between the two. Any images of the other 2 builds in the series? Quote

finnbricker Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 (edited) Still disappointed with 31036 Toy & Grocery, but I'm not giving up. And after playing around with LDD for a few hours, I'm a little less disappointed. There is, after all, potential to modularize this as a 16-wide. The two-floor version (612 pc) only needs one set plus basic bricks. The three floor version (780 pc) obviously needs extra windows, an extra staircase etc. Since the shop is too small for a grocery, I'm thinking of making it a bag & purse shop. A place to put all those Friends handbags... Another alternative would be to make it a toy store, but I have the TRU and at some point, I want to make a Lego store, too, so I think the toys of 31036 will be placed in the GE toys department. Which one do you think looks better? Any additions or details? All feedback is welcome! Edited December 24, 2014 by finnbricker Quote

I was sorry to see the small size of the official set because it seemed much harder to mod into modular scale than the previous Bike Shop and Cafe. Seeing your work shows that, with not much more than one set, a nice building can be designed - could be an affordable way to keep filling out the neighborhood. Regarding design feedback, the only thing I would say is that maybe the blue "hat" part isn't necessary. Thanks for sharing! Quote
eurotrash Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Those are good looking MODs Finnbricker. The only suggestion I'd make would be to group the windows on the front facade into two groups of two rather than the one-two-one arrangement you have at the moment. Quote
lightningtiger Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 Having a closer look at the toy & grocery shop on the top floor the walkway has gates to close if you fold up the building like in the bike shop and cafe.......so no one falls off when outside. Quote
