Just found this on a well known UK free ads site and thought it'd make an interesting topic for discussion.

There's no doubt they're brilliant MOC's that, along with the instructions, took a huge amount of time and effort designing, building and expense, but I can't help wondering...

...What price genius?

Sometimes, you just get sort of an obsessive compulsive project. Like my 96 x 64 grand emporium that will soon be five stories high.

It's too expensive, my time could have been spent better elsewhere and sometimes I do ask 'why'? And, my project doesn't have the same level of creativity as the one to which you've linked us. So, beats the heck out of me.

But, I appreciate you opening the discussion and I'm curious to see what kind of response it generates.

Hi

I appreciate the urge you and many others here have to build something extraordinary and the obsession that must be needed to see it through to completion.

I saw the ad and it started me wondering what price we, outside of that process put on it's result.

Like you, I'm curious to see the response.

Thanks.

I don't expect my OCD to have value to most people. I just do it, well, because. I have shown it to a few people who appreciated the look of an old time department store that took up the entire block. As for value, the whole is definitely less than the pre build price of all of the GEs that I used.

Am I right in assuming he's asking about £250,- for his time spend building from instructions he bought online and collecting additional pieces? (I could potentially see £500,- worth of Lego there although I fear it might be less.)

I wouldn't bother, it has 'MADOCA SUV' in there and I suspect the others are copies of the various full-RC efforts that people have made on this forum.

I'll try to sum this up a little, because I don't think the price is too bad. I recalculate to Euro, because it's easier for me and I roughly have the prices in my head ;)

750GBP = ~960€

Stock prices:

8043 had a retail price of ~170€ when it was available. Right now, the set sells "used and built" for around 200€ or even more.

42009 has a retail price of ~200€, but usually sells a lot cheaper. But I'll take the stock price.

Madoca's SUV has no pricetag because it is a MOC. But, if it was a set, it would be probably around 180-200€ because of the PF parts.

So we are already at approximately 400€ for two sets. In addition, 200€ for the SUV sums to 600€. Ant that is already nearly 2/3 of the price.

If you want to build Jurgens Ultimate 42009 you probably have to invest another 150€.

So you are at around 750€ for the 3 models. But I guess it will be even more if you bricklink the SUV completely. The rest, which is according to my numbers around 200€, is for the time investment, purchasing parts and building.

For the most Lego fans around the forum, that is of course ridiculous and expensive. Even for me. But keep in mind, there are people out there who are not into Lego like that, but love some of the sets. With this offer they can get 3 nice models, all full RC, at a rather reasonable price. They just want to buy the models, put them on a shelf and admire them.

its like asking why we have to learn some advanced mathematics at school when we will not use it every day (we have apps for that etc...)

the point is you are excercising your brain, carving new neural paths in your brain and strengthening existing one which will help you problem solve and be a better builder/designer in the future

so keep making ridiculously expensive and large MOCs !

He lists both creators.
