I have spent a few hours putting together a 4x4 Crawler to the stage I connect batteries, etc to already fitted motors. A quick test run revealed the front and rear wheels turn in opposite directions. I understand each run off separate motors, can I switch direction of one of these motors? Should I turn a motor around? What is the best option? Has anyone else experienced similar?

flip one of the differential?

I am sure this is your problem as well , flipping the direction of the motor using a switch is a cleave idea Kabelbinder.

This is a common problem I know 3 people who did this when building the 42030 VOLVO L350F Wheel Loader

You could flip the differential, but the switch is a better idea as you won't have to disassemble
