Hi all.

I am a father of 2 little boys who are just discovering lego.

But when I was a kid I loved lego and I loved airports. I did build a big airport back in the day but it was hard to get the bits I needed and never really worked how I wanted it too.

So we have started to build a new airport project and by eldest boy is loving it (as am I). I am now getting to build the airport I wanted to build when I was a kid.

I much prefer the planes of the 80s as I feel the new ones are way to big to work with.

Here are some initial photos but I will add more as we go along.

Any thoughts or ideas are more than welcome!

Cheers

Ben

Great work... I love the detail that pays tribute to the 'Classic' Building Style of the 80s sets. I also personally love the 80s planes (even though scale wise they are a bit wee)

Cant wait to see more from this project :sweet:

This really takes me back to my LEGO airport setup as a kid.

The size is incredible.

One thing I'd recommend is the addition of the LL-BEL helicopter from 6392: Airport.

Soo organized and the terminals idea is so brilliant. COOL

I remember i had all the airport theme bavk then in 80s and 90s...they r the best!

Quite wonderful, I love the details so far. I've been making airports since I first got into legos as well, so highly recommend this theme for kids getting into legos, which appears to be just what you did with your sons! Can't wait to see more!

Yes, we have one of those to build! Will add it later!

We are just waiting for more bricks to arrive to complete the main structure of the terminal building.

I have left the back of the terminal open so the boys can actually play with it and there will just be a partial roof for the same reason!

Lots of work to do!

AWESOME classic town inspired creation 'bensaunders'......I can't wait to see the finished product......Brick On !

We don't see that many airports around here, but this is great - it has enough details, it's big enough, the look is consistent throughout. I agree that the older, smaller planes are better.

Very cool. That's the kind of airport I tried building as a kid. I have a couple of those planes (which I think are the coolest plane types TLG has made); I really like how the MOC has the classic-Town feel to it.

Now you need a cool ATC tower.

I can only agree that this project looks very promising, bensaunders. And welcome to Eurobricks, by the way.

As the others, I also prefer the 4-wide aircraft. I have several airports, including the first one from 1985. As more people here, I have also tried to build a big airport. One project I particularly remember was a one-level terminal, built on raised baseplates. I think I raised the plates three bricks up, so it fitted with the aircrafts. The mainbuilding consisted of 1 48x48 baseplate, and the finger two 32x32 road plates with two jet brigdes on each side. And just like you, it never really reached a level, I wanted, due to lack of bricks. But hey! It worked anyway

I look forward to see more your airport project. Enjoy building with your boys.

Great idea. Very big size ) I think you need some lighting on Runway and roof ))) Will be glad to see more photos.

Yes, lights and a partial roof to come! Plus lots of other details, seats and a control tower to add!

I agree! I did a search for airports on here and found very few projects! I guess it's due to space, particularly with the new extra big planes. I think you need to use the small ones to get a decent size airport!

Which is why maybe we should petition lego to bring back this smaller size, they rarely make them anymore, and mostly as airline exclusives...but I guess I'm just dreaming

Wow, this is what I dreamt of when I got my airport (6392) as kid. Fantastic job!

This is amazing! Also brings me back to my airport that I had as a kid! Impressive!

I always love a good airport MOC and this one doesn't disappoint. I am looking forward to seeing further progress!

Do the gates have an interior yet?

Hi All,

Here is a small update.

Some bricks arrived yesterday so I spent an hour building a bit more of the main terminal building and testing out how the floor will work. I will add some better quality pictures later. But for now, here it is...

You know, this is the one thing that I'm struggling with at the moment but I'm sure I will come up with a plan! I'm not sure if it will be part of the terminal or stand alone or even where it will be positioned!

Nice looking terminal - as others have said, it has that nice 80's feel to it. One thing you may want to add that would make it even nicer is an escalator or two. Check out how it's done in the "Grand Emporium" modular building - but that would definitely set it off nicely.

I'd be amazed if i had this as a kid.. Hell, i'm amazed just looking at this airport.

Can't wait to see it finished. :classic:

Great build for play. 4 wide planes do maximize available space. Lucky kids. :classic:

This is great! Love the playability and I'm a fan of the smaller planes.

Awsome , i'm a big fan of the classic style

UPDATE

So, here are a few shots of the continued work on our airport...

The outside of the terminal is now mainly complete

I have rebuilt the small snack bar and finished the floor.

Some detail on the coffee bar (missing a table top though!)

The view from the terminal... I always dreamed of having planes lined up as they appear at real airports with all the tails in a line

I'm really pleased with how it's going and the boys love the 2 luggage shoots I have included (one down from checking to a collection area and one from outside down to the luggage belt in arrivals)

But there is still lots to do...

- I need to furnish and detail the departure gates

- finish the lighting

- figure out how to include an air traffic control tower

- put a floor in the Resturant and magazines in the small shop

Plus much more!

Cheers

Ben
