Aeroeza Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 (edited) I've just read the good Doctor's superb review of this set and am left flabbergasted! I initially thought this UCS was looking pretty darn good... But now I'm hyperventilating with excitement!!! I'm even thrilled about the minifigs (which is a first for me). Dammit Boba looks cool! In fact I'm so dangerously overexcited that I'm going to express exactly the same sentiments regarding this set again... Wow!! Just passed out. (...and Boba still looks really cooool) Edited December 10, 2014 by Aeroeza Quote
Chills Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 LOL@ Aeroeza. While I'm not about to pass out, I am pretty excited about this set. I'm already making space in my Death Star room to display it. 3 weeks to go, right? Quote
GallardoLU Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 For me it is 3 weeks and 17hrs till the local LEGO store opens, I wonder if there will be a line like there was for the Sand Crawler.... Quote
Chills Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 There was a line? Wow, I wonder if there was one at the stores here in the Chicago area. I'm just going to order it from S@H. I can wait a couple of days after launch. Quote

It has everything... accuracy, scale, minifigs, play features and a name plate. I'm an old school UCS collector so I really don't care about minifigs and play features but if TLG can design a set to scale for the minifigs, make it look the UCS part and throw in a bit of fun for display options then I'm all for it! Bring on January the First! Quote

I thought I had planned out the room with enough space for a few years of future sets, but I'm seeing so many that I love I might have to take over the craft room I built for my wife, which is adjacent to the Death Star room. Lobot Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 I really can't wait to buy this, especially as I've just received an email from Lego offering double VIP points on the 5th January Quote
TuftedDuck Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Has anyone actually seen the figures on cost differences in stickers vs printed elements? i suspect the technical setup of printing onto elements is substantially more than running sticker sheets through a topline publishing print press. Sets still use prints though so the costs cant be prohibitive. Benny's spaceship used both for the classic space logo - so perhaps the element onto which your printing is a large factor. Slopes cheaper than wing/tail elements for instance Quote
Beckmesser Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Designers probably don't really have a choice between sticker and printed element most of the time: printing an element means additional cost and logistics resources. When models are so detailed that a set contains a sticker sheet anyway, it is hard to argue in favor of printing an element when the fancy motive on a brick could as well be achieved by making the sticker sheet a little larger - which costs almost nothing. BrickSev Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 I called my local Lego store today to ask if there were any upcoming VIP offers and was told there were none. Can you elaborate on your email please? I got it too. Basically it says they want to say thank you because I bought from Lego shop during the Brick Friday VIP Early access (on Nov. 22nd) and to express their thanks they are going to offer me double points on all purchases on that date. So it appears it applies only to those who bought something on Brick Friday VIP early access. Quote

Slopes cheaper than wing/tail elements for instance Bit off topic, but the reason they almost always print on slopes rather than using stickers is because of the texture of Lego slope bricks. Stickers don't apply to it as well as to smooth bricks, and they tend to get air bubbles and peel off. They do it from time to time - the Imperial Dropship from a year or two back is one example that I'm aware of - but it's hardly common. Quote

Thanks for commenting. Should have realised that about slopes. Also, yes, a bit off topic. Got reading comment about stickers in UCS sets and got fixated on that rather than the thread. Quote
LoRd AmUnRa Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Here is a review over at Techlug, from Anio i guess, good review but a little bit sobering :/ Quote
Anio Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Yes, I wrote it. I tried to be as exhaustive as possible on every aspect. Translator may mess up sometimes. Some things are tricky to explain in French, so I can't imagine that a translator rewords everything correctly (for example, when I explain how the wings use the flexibility of Lego bricks). If you need any help or don't understand some of the things I explained, please, ask. One more thing you may not understand : when I say "Ackbar would say "it's a trap" seeing the door at the back", it's a pun. :p Cause this kind of door is generally called "trappe" in French. Quote
All in the Reflexes Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Seen this in my local lego shop, its massive!! so much want Quote
BrickSev Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Seen this in my local lego shop, its massive!! so much want I'm really thinking about getting it too. My only dilemma is: the Slave I or the Sandcrawler? As vehicle I prefer the Slave I but as set the crawler seems quite impressive. Well I have several days to decide Quote

Only thing i would say is if you have a previous version of the Slave then get the Sandcrawler, otherwise my pick is S1 Quote

Only thing i would say is if you have a previous version of the Slave then get the Sandcrawler, otherwise my pick is S1 I have the 2010 version of the Slave I. It is a nice set but the new one looks so superior but, in the end we can say "it's sill the same vehicle" I have the Crawler and I would say the Slave looks much more impressive than the Crawler. What makes the Slave I always impressive is its unique design. It always has unique pieces (needed to create it's peculiar" look). So despite the more than 1000 pieces of difference between the two sets the Slave I looked more impressive. That's indeed very interesting. It seems it is going to be an epic Lego set Quote
Faefrost Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 Designers probably don't really have a choice between sticker and printed element most of the time: printing an element means additional cost and logistics resources. When models are so detailed that a set contains a sticker sheet anyway, it is hard to argue in favor of printing an element when the fancy motive on a brick could as well be achieved by making the sticker sheet a little larger - which costs almost nothing. Based on some of the info that has come out over the years (with tons from Mark Staffords Redit discussions) it is probably something like this. - when tasked to design a set, the set has a specified budget and a specified "change" budget or permitted number of changes. - changes are anything that will require something not in inventory, and/or will require that a part then be added to a warehouse storage slot. So anything that creates a new or currently not in place inventory number and related logistics. So an existing part in a new color is a change. Printing is a change, etc. - stickers however are just considered a part. Since they can just about be created on demand they do not eat up a precious change in set design. So the only costs associated with them is as a part cost. Inventory management of stickers is also much easier. - once you print parts they sit in the warehouse taking up space and inventory logistics until you find a use for them. - further most non minifig printed parts require a manual human interaction during production. Somebody has to load each part into the printing machine. The varied nature of the parts makes automating it difficult. Unlike minifig printing which is fully automated. So when are we likely to see printed parts? - often curved parts get printed as stickers on some can be problematic. Particularly parts with complex curves. - smaller parts such as small tiles. - smaller run sets such as D2C exclusives. It's easier to make and sell out of 100,000 printed parts then it is to do the same with a million. - where the print is a critical or core element of the character or theme, Such as the Cars characters. When will we be more prone to see stickers? - sets that target younger builders starting above Duplo. Unlike AFOLs kids often view stickers as a fun element. - the set or theme has a more limited change budget. - the print is highly unique with limited reuse potential. - the print is license specific IP which even further limits its reuse. I suspect that the designer will often make any decisions regarding printed parts vs stickers late in the process, once they see if they have any excess in the set budget. Quote
