detjensrobert Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Hello all, I've made this custom electric (?) engine and have decided to share it with the community. Not sure if this resembles any real engine, as this is a pretty basic shell. Now for some pics! Brick built doors and removable roof (for easy access to future PF upgrade, currently 9v): (yes I know I'm missing a window) Pulling a couple Santa Fe carriages: Feedback appreciated! Quote
LegoSjaak Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 It is a very boxy design.. if i were you, i would check out other peoples creations, and first try to do something in between your current design and other ones.. Ofcourse you cannot build topmodels the first time, but this is a bit simple. Quote
UrbanErwin Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 For starters I would suggest adding some grills and fans to the top and side Quote
kieran Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Its a train, and its pulling some rolling stock so for that you are all there, I agree that a bit more detailing, if you have the bricks, will make it come to life. Quote
dr_spock Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Not bad. If it is electric, you could add a pantograph. Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Nice try, I agree some more trimmings on it would help it......looks too 1980's for my liking.......Brick On 'detjensrobert' ! Quote
Murdoch17 Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 ThIs kinda looks like a Electro Motive Division (EMD) F40PH. They were built from 1975 to 1992 (and by another company from 1991 -2000) and were used by Amtrak until being replaced by the General Electric (GE) Genesis units starting in 1992. Link to Wikipedia F40PH page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_F40PH Quote
AgentRick Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 I'm with everyone else. The sides are a bit barren. Maybe add some pin-striping to break up the large mass of white up top? And perhaps on the roof why not try adding some fans or horns? Quote
wondermonkey Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Yeah I was thinking Amtrak in the US too. I like it, maybe add custom stickers (logos, numbers, etc.). Fans, pantograph, extra detailing are all great ideas but make it how you want it! My Mocs have changed so many times when I get an idea and that's why I love Lego railroading over more traditional model railroading. Have fun! Quote
detjensrobert Posted October 13, 2014 Author Posted October 13, 2014 (edited) I added a couple of fans to the roof, but having some trouble on how to add in the vents. Any suggestions? Camera is charging currently, pics coming soon. Edited October 13, 2014 by detjensrobert Quote
Pizzareno Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 I think it is a good idea to look at real life pictures to get inspiration. You don't have to try and build something that looks identical but it will give you an idea of what kind of things to add to your loco. You can see where there are grills down the side or covers to access the engine components. How the cab might differ from the rest of the body of the loco. Like others have said components on the roof to distinguish it as either electric or diesel. To add vents you can use headlight bricks and add a grill tile or these and the larger variants - http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=87087 These also make good grill bricks - http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=2877 You can use brackets too to add detailing at the sides or front and back. But there are heaps of great MOCs on here that can serve as inspiration too. Have a look and see how other people build their trains. Of course you probably won't build to the same standard straight away but the inspiration that can be gathered will be a great boost. At least it is for me And good work for your first effort. My first locomotives were pretty basic to start with but I was happy with them. I think you have a good base to work from. And the great thing with LEGO is you can build and rebuild and rebuild as you get better and decide how things can look different. Keep it up Quote
detjensrobert Posted October 14, 2014 Author Posted October 14, 2014 (edited) Heres a picture of the fans: Ive also added black tiles to the roof to get rid of the 80s look of the roof pieces (from this set) and also because of this piece ( ) which i'm using to hold the fans. EDIT: added BL thumbnail instead of link Edited October 14, 2014 by detjensrobert Quote
Man with a hat Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 That's looking much better. You made a big improvement. Now perhaps with some grille brick on the side and you have a very nice engine. Quote
dr_spock Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Looks nicer with the roof radiator fans/grilles. The white body and blue strip looks a bit like Indonesia railroad U20C. Quote
detjensrobert Posted October 19, 2014 Author Posted October 19, 2014 Vents added! Also added a 3rd headlight. Its made of this part () attached with a couple beams. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 Nice improvements! I also like theround nose with the cheese pieces used for lights! Quote
