Hello all,

I've made this custom electric (?) engine and have decided to share it with the community.

Not sure if this resembles any real engine, as this is a pretty basic shell.

Now for some pics!

Brick built doors and removable roof (for easy access to future PF upgrade, currently 9v):

(yes I know I'm missing a window)

Pulling a couple Santa Fe carriages:

Feedback appreciated!

It is a very boxy design.. if i were you, i would check out other peoples creations, and first try to do something in between your current design and other ones.. Ofcourse you cannot build topmodels the first time, but this is a bit simple.

Its a train, and its pulling some rolling stock so for that you are all there, I agree that a bit more detailing, if you have the bricks, will make it come to life.

I'm with everyone else. The sides are a bit barren. Maybe add some pin-striping to break up the large mass of white up top?

And perhaps on the roof why not try adding some fans or horns?

Yeah I was thinking Amtrak in the US too. I like it, maybe add custom stickers (logos, numbers, etc.). Fans, pantograph, extra detailing are all great ideas but make it how you want it! My Mocs have changed so many times when I get an idea and that's why I love Lego railroading over more traditional model railroading. Have fun!

I added a couple of fans to the roof, but having some trouble on how to add in the vents. Any suggestions?

Camera is charging currently, pics coming soon.

I think it is a good idea to look at real life pictures to get inspiration. You don't have to try and build something that looks identical but it will give you an idea of what kind of things to add to your loco.

You can see where there are grills down the side or covers to access the engine components. How the cab might differ from the rest of the body of the loco.

Like others have said components on the roof to distinguish it as either electric or diesel.

To add vents you can use headlight bricks and add a grill tile or these and the larger variants - http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=87087

These also make good grill bricks - http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=2877

You can use brackets too to add detailing at the sides or front and back.

But there are heaps of great MOCs on here that can serve as inspiration too. Have a look and see how other people build their trains. Of course you probably won't build to the same standard straight away but the inspiration that can be gathered will be a great boost. At least it is for me

And good work for your first effort. My first locomotives were pretty basic to start with but I was happy with them. I think you have a good base to work from. And the great thing with LEGO is you can build and rebuild and rebuild as you get better and decide how things can look different.

Keep it up :sweet:

Heres a picture of the fans:

Ive also added black tiles to the roof to get rid of the 80s look of the roof pieces (from this set) and also because of this piece ( 61485.jpg ) which i'm using to hold the fans.

EDIT: added BL thumbnail instead of link
