Jim Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 Tomorrow I will be starting my new job as Solution Architect. This boils down to coming up with software solutions. So I won't be programming that much anymore. At least that's the gist of it. I will be spending more time at customers, which does mean that I won't be online during the daytime anymore. And I won't be responding that fast to PM anymore. Unfortunately that's the downside, but obviously work comes first. Quote

I am into IT consulting and at times I have to back up as an Infrastructure Architect too. Based on my experience, I can assure you that you will definitely enjoy your new work but may end up working longer hours. Quote
Jim Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 I am used to sitting behind the computer during the evening, so that won't bother me much. As long as I enjoy what I do. Quote
Maaboo the Witch Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 Well done on the new job, Jim! Best of luck and hope you enjoy it. Quote

That is welcome change...when I have ended with software development I have found a time in my life and time for hobbies (of course for LEGO)... And not to mention to have healthier life with less stress. Congratulations on you new job and I hope that in your situation it will be change for the better Quote
Vectormatic Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 congrats on the new job jim! im also in IT, still as a software engineer though, but im mulling over making a move towards (technical) architect. Most of the low level implementation stuff doesnt do it for me anymore, so might be time to step up a level, im just affraid that i wont get to do any coding anymore, and end up spending my time in MS office.. WvG_853 Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 Good luck @Jim! It’s always good to change and challenge yourself from time to time. I have changed function recently and am still learning ... Quote

Well, as a software architect, I sure hope that MS Office won't be my main tool hehe. I will do more high level stuff, but I have said that I have no problem with still doing some coding. As long as I am not a full time software engineer/coder. We'll see! I still have a lot to learn in the field of Architect, so slowly moving towards that position sounds right to me. @All thanks! I also hope it will a good step forward. Quote
Cumulonimbus Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 Congratulations with the new job @Jim. I know the feeling of the mix of anticipation and excitement when starting a new career step: For about 3 months now, I work as a mechanical engineer in a hi-tech production company and not a day has gone by without me learning something new. Some seriously high-end stuff (think nanometer scale tolerances) which blows my mind and it amazes me that they even let me work on those machines . The question of how far you go up the corporate ladder without loosing touch with the hands-on work is a difficult one, I find. In the world of mechanical engineering you reach the inevitable point where in order to climb further, you must become a manager and give up the hands-on work which brought you to that point. Personally, I haven't found the answer yet. Quote
sirslayer Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 @Jim really? like this!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_architect ... I do contract work for Activision and the are always looking for guys like you.. Congratulation to a new brave world!! Quote
Vectormatic Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 Interesting to see how many IT/engineering types hang around here, but i guess that makes sense for the technic subforum :) Quote
Ngoc Nguyen Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 Today in my country there is a warehouse clearance sale in which discounts are as high as 50%. I immediately went to the place displace it's been 20:30 already. In the Technic corner there are only 42062, 42068, 42069, 42055, and 42058. And the interesting thing is there are heaps of 8293 (the M motor and Battery Box) at 50% off. I grabbed 42062, 42068 (for B model), and 8293. This got me wondering whether Power Function will be phased out completely next year and the distributor had to get rid off those motors haha. In Vietnam there is only one official Lego distributor. Maybe they got access into the next development or something. Quote
BusterHaus Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 A week ago is I started disassembling all my half (or less) finished builds. I came to the conclusion that it's better to focus on a single project than 8 different ones simultaneously. Now I just need to pick one and run with it... Anyone else run into the same problem? As a side note, some of the builds had been assembled for almost a year and had quite a few cracked parts when I took them apart. I don't remember bricks cracking this easily when I was a kid. Sigh. These are the worst offenders: https://www.flickr.com/photos/151519486@N07/shares/61b061 Quote
Jim Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 There is a generic discussion topic for...generic discussion ;) Let’s try to keep the Pub for other (non-LEGO) conversations. Quote

A new job - a new lifepage - who knows what interesting you will explore. The same time I stopped working in the Bank sphere, where I had been working for the last six years, last time I was working with fraudulant transactions with plastic cards. Since Friday I'm Software Tesing Engineer. My new page book started. Quote
Boulderer Posted August 4, 2018 Posted August 4, 2018 Someone in the house has been watching Forces TV, and all the 80s shows that it broadcasts. No one is owning up to it though. I’m not averse to a bit of Airwolf or Knight Rider but, it appears that they are embarrassing to own up to for the rest of the family. So, it prompts me to ask ... what guilty pleasures do you have where TV is concerned? PS: I feel it’s fair to warn that no amnesty from ridicule should be granted ? Quote
dr_spock Posted August 4, 2018 Posted August 4, 2018 I haven't watched TV in a long time. I tried to repair a TV today. It doesn't power on. Checked the power supply and was only outputting 6.3V on the pin labeled 12V. Off to the city's household electronics dump site it goes. Quote

For a second there, I was thinking you were going to head off to the local electronics store to get pieces to fix it. Quote
