February 1, 201510 yr Author Instructions are now available! Edited February 1, 201510 yr by jantjeuh
February 1, 201510 yr Actually, if the turntable is mounted 'up side down', then the drivetrain must be located in the chassis. And there was not place left for it.......... So that is why it is within the superstucture.
February 1, 201510 yr How much time did it take to design and built it? Omikron, see the link in the first post lots of details on that page about Designer-Hans crane. or follow this one http://www.designer-han.nl/lego/ Me thinks I will make this my project for February, just waiting for it to show up on Rebrickable to see what sets I can put towards it. February 1, 201510 yr Author Up on Rebrickable now: http://rebrickable.com/mocs/han/dragline-crawler-crane Enjoy the build!
February 1, 201510 yr I've been waiting for this, and am very excited to build this model. Some of the parts are rare and very expensive, so I may change some of the colored parts. How difficult is it to remove the rechargeable battery box? I'm thinking to switch it to the AAA box to save a little money, if it's not going to take all day to change batteries.
February 1, 201510 yr Should not be difficult; but of course replace it with the same size AAA box (eg the 88000 part as on the LEGO website). Downside is that that 88000 battery box adds weight to the superstructure, the rechargeable box is significant less weight. And all extra weight adds up to (a little) more stress on the swing drivetrain.
February 1, 201510 yr Future Builders, This type of construction equipment is my favorite and Han has captured it with great 'playability' perfectly. When I was younger and working 9 to 5, I operated a crane very similar to this and every function he designed into this MOC is like the real deal! IMHO the free-fall system is a great design and the bucket does as it should, falling to the material and dragging that next load into the bucket, where you can control both bucket "ropes" and keep your bucket in a horizontal position ( not losing the load ) Han also uses a small wheel under the superstructure to take the strain off of the turntable and the slewing operation is very smooth, no jerking or bouncing. The crawling speed is just right for this kind of equipment too, you must remember that this type of crane rarely moves its' location, but this with all that boom and bucket moves very smoothly. Again with no bouncing or jerking. The model is very solid and quite strong, not that I'm going to lift something heavy. If the builder decides to lift something heavy, using the 'double rope' system it will lift that load, unless you turn it over lifting too much. The BI are very clear and easy to follow, anyone who decides to build this will find that even a beginner in Technic models can put this together. Thank-you Han for a great design, oh did I forget...............this MOC is beautiful to look at too!

Some of the orange and green parts are very rare (and therefore expensive) indeed. I bit the bullet anyway, because I love the 'BAM' livery Building it in, say, white/blue or black/red would probably be a lot cheaper. Edited February 1, 201510 yr by jantjeuh

Don't mind me wrong but I asked the designer himself while he was in the thread. If the thread is created here it is common sense to discuss it here, instead of being in 2 places at once.
February 1, 201510 yr Author 75c08 in green is currently not for sale on BrickLink, I suggest buying 75c09 instead, and cutting it to length with a sharp knife.
February 1, 201510 yr I was just going to use black, got plenty of them anyway. Orange bushes are rare as hens teeth also, they will need to be substituted for another colour.
February 4, 201510 yr I just finished building a modified version of the crane, and I can say it is one of the most amazing and complex Lego cranes I ever seen! Thank you, Han! I decided to add two sections to the boom, now it is almost 120 centimeters length. I also added a few panels, superstructure now looks a little more smooth. Rear drum winch is powered by L-motor instead of M. And the last thing - I added differential pulley system to the upper hook. I hope that I'll be able to make good quality photos soon.

OMG there's someone standing in a kitchen outside your window taking pictures of you and the crane!!! Model looks good in red and white as well, clean lines, good substitution for the (sadly) rarer green/orange in the original
