Aiming briefly at the Skirmishers' eyes, the Warden could only watch as the Dragoon tried to leap into the air only to find his companion missing, jabbing viciously at the Skirmishers in retaliation. The Monk saved the situation, single-handedly slaughtering several Alchemists (sadly not Skirmishers) in two swift strikes, including the blue-hatted one that had led the party into this situation. Her target down for the count, the Druid decided to heal herself, curing herself of her own Confusion. The Civilian Defenders pressed their advantage to strike back at the Warden, but at the last moment one of them finally fell, simply succumbing to the putrid poison inflicted upon him. Judging by the date on this journal's entries, the most notable entries began roughly five weeks earlier. Mayor Persephone has asked me to study our town's legal code, particularly with regard to mages and people with spellcasting abilities. He seemed rather agitated about the whole thing, and asked me to find a solution as quickly as I can. ------------------------------------- Huh. I guess the old superstitions against Mages go back further than I thought. It seems like the code forces us to exile mages from our community as soon as their powers manifest. I couldn't find out why, but Mayor Persephone was not happy when I gave him the news. He told to try and find some loophole. ------------------------------------- Unfortunately, from what I can tell, there's no way around the laws requiring mage exile--not without changing the laws, which would require community consensus, something the Mayor's not likely to get after his behavior over the past two weeks. ------------------------------------ Interesting...very interesting. Unless I'm mistaken, the new girl is a Mage herself. That would explain a lot... ------------------------------------ Amara--the new girl, that is, she's very sweet--said she's looking into memory spells for the mayor. She offered to teach me a bit about Scrolls if I helped her, and since this legal project is at a dead end, I've decided to take her up on it. ----------------------------------- I think the Mayor wants to make the town forget that Amara's a Mage. Or maybe just forget the law? Either way, I can't figure out why he's doing this. I feel awful about breaking the law like this...but she's so nice, and learning the true uses of these old Scrolls is so fascinating. Maybe it's not so bad...? ---------------------------------- That sleazeball Manfred Ming just showed up. He wants all our research for some project of his--something about training disobedient golems? It went completely over my head, and I'm a pretty smart guy--this is high-level stuff. I wanted to slam the door in his face, but Amara agreed to tell him if we found anything, so... --------------------------------- Amara and I found an old Scroll among the tomes that talked about Perception Filters. Amara said that normally they're just harmless spells used to keep people from noticing things, but this one explained how to make the effects...bigger. Neither of us like that idea very much, so Amara's going to try and remember what she can about casting the normal one. --------------------------------- We showed Mayor Persephone our idea for using a Perception Filter to try and hide Amara--he was furious! He said no one was going to force him or his daughters into hiding ever again. I didn't want to, but Amara ended up admitting we found a more powerful version of the spell. He ordered us to turn over our research to Dr. Ming in the morning. --------------------------------- Wait...daughters? Plural? Last I heard, Mayor Persephone only had one daughter--that shy girl who never talks to anyone, Mallora. I wonder... -------------------------------- It's late. Shouldn't be in here. Don't have time for long notes. Found evidence. Amara is Persephone's illegitimate daughter, forced to leave 10 yrs ago when powers manifested. Got to go, put things back before anyone realizes. No one can find out about this. -------------------------------- Oh my gods. Mayor Persephone came in with Dr. Ming for our presentation. Afterwards, he pulled Amara aside, so I kind of...eavesdropped on them. I was right--he wants to use the Perception Filter to make the town forget the old Mage hatred, so his daughter Amara can be safe. I still don't know why he decided to bring her home, but there has to be some reason. Anyway, after Ming explained the details to us, I went and found a book about the technique he's using to program the golems. He calls it the Soul Tap, but it's actually an ancient kind of blood magic. Once the blood is placed inside the golem, it splits off a piece of the person's soul and puts it in the golem--but only a fragment, so they're not fully human. He thinks it'll make it easier to program the golems to do what he wants, but he's wrong, so very wrong. Ming asked me to deliver the notes on the Perception Filter to Dr. Richter in person--this is my only chance to convince him to shut the project down, before it's too late... ------------------------------- He doesn't get it. The Perception Filter--the strong one he's using--it doesn't work like he thinks it does. He thinks it'll make the golems see us humans as golems and not attack us, but as soon as Amara casts the Perception Filter on the townspeople, the spells will interfere with each other, and the golems will-- The page was abruptly torn there. Having slain every single threat within the Tower of Towr, it was simple to search out the staircase leading upwards. As they stood at the foot of the stairs, the party knew that whatever obstacles remained ahead, they would be the final ones. Were they prepared to ascend to the Alchemists' Lab at the top of the Tower, or would they take a moment to prepare? Quote
