QM Note: I'm in the midst of building the set for the next update; I should be able to update sometime between 12-18 hours from now. Sorry for the delay!

Posted

QM Note: Well, one render took, while the other didn't, so unfortunately no image this update (but there will be one for the next one! ). We're almost through!

Round 3 of the Final Four...Fight?

>Bartholomew Docken (Darksteel Crossbow) does nothing

Thormanil Nihai (Shishkebab) does nothing

>Hybros uses Remedy on Arx - (Arx: negative effects removed)

>Hybros uses Remedy on Ellaria - (Ellaria: negative effects removed)

>Arx does nothing

Ellaria uses Potion on Mayor Persephone - Failure! (dodged!)

Cecilia Sloane vs. Bartholomew Docken: stands down

Mayor Persephone vs. Thormanil Nihai: uses Phoenix Essence on Amara Jing

Captain Sloane seemed confused by the party's actions.

15801789294_07ec2ca9df_t.jpg

"...what in Hel?"

In an instant, Mayor Persephone was on his feet, discarding his Scrolls and dodging the Druid's aid as he dove for his daughter.

15801789294_07ec2ca9df_t.jpg

"Kennedy, wait!"

But my father wouldn't listen. Callously kicking his colleague's corpse off of his weapon, Mayor Persephone poured Phoenix Essence upon my sister, hoping against hope that it would work.

16398310756_6c6f7b063f_t.jpg

"Amara...please..."

For several strained seconds, it seemed she was still slain. Then...

16236885950_5e3142e54f_t.jpg

"*cough* ...Dad. Thank you."

THE BATTLE WAS DISCONTINUED! The party received experience for successfully resolving the situation.

"I'm still not sure what's going on around here. But as long as you lot aren't trying to kill me, I'm just going to sit down for a moment before Amara's explanation inevitably gives me a headache."

Too weak to laugh, Amara merely smiled. The party's celebration was short-lived, however, as a loud grinding noise could be heard from behind a batch of alchemical equipment.

16398310756_6c6f7b063f_t.jpg

"The escape tunnel...but that's impossible...the only people who could open it from that side are..."

"I can hear voices," a familiar voice said. "Quickly! They might still be alive!"

Amara struggled against her father, who had moved her next to Captain Sloane so as to tend to them more easily. She looked to the party, the tone in her voice conveying to the party the dawning horror her seemingly-blank face could not.

16236885950_5e3142e54f_t.jpg

"No...they're coming..." She again struggled to sit straighter, as if it would somehow make them take her more seriously. "Listen to me, would-be Heroes! *cough* Don't look. Don't even look. Look and you're dead. It will be fast, faster than you could believe; turn your back, look away, just don't. look."

Behind her, an outline of bricks began to recess from the wall and slide away. The party had a split second to choose: look, or look away. What would they decide?

Posted

"Ehehm, well, good thinking Ellaria. Here I thought we had failed the whole town." Hybros turned towards the door and looks. "Dead? Hehe, I believe the magic of one of the veterans will protect us."

Posted

Not one to be terrified so easily, Thormanil stares down whatever was coming. Arx hesitated before standing firm at Thormanil's side and also looking.

Posted

"Wait!" At the last second, Hybros tore his eyes from the wall. "Perhaps it has something to do with this Perception Filter. If the people coming through that wall are survivors, they will see us as golems. Perhaps that turns them into golems, or makes them see us that way. We must find a way to stop this cycle!" Hybros looks away.

Posted

Ellaria was relieved that she had figured out at least part of the truth and avoided more bloodshed. Upon Amara's warning, Ellaria quickly turns away from the wall, not looking.

Posted (edited)

Thormanil grumbles in the mere moments he has left, turning away from the wall and shielding Arx, giving him time to look away as well.

Grumble grumble but I'm curious! Heh

Having rescued me from the group of golems who had kidnapped me, we had returned to our ravaged campsite, only to find their bags missing and footprints leading towards town. I led the Heroes to the Tower's hidden entrance, an entrance that only my family and Captain Sloane knew of, and urged them to climb quickly. We knew we hadn't much time--we had followed the footprints into one family's home, only to find them dead--slaughtered swiftly just hours before, the marks matching the Heroes' weapons, leading to a chilling conclusion we would come to confirm as we opened the door at the top of the stairs and clambered through...

"Mallora!"

15084404754_e296353b0c_o.png

"Dad!"

I threw off my hood and pushed past the Heroes to embrace my father.

15314607412_be5f723dc6_t.jpg

"Dad."

15834041703_f77f71c87f_t.jpg

"Before anyone... *cough* asks, they can't hear you. They can't hear any humans. The only reason they can hear me, Dad, and Captain Sloane is that *cough* we excluded ourselves from the second Perception Filter, because we were all there when the spell was cast."

15314607412_be5f723dc6_t.jpg

"...Perception Filter?"

Amara nodded.

15834041703_f77f71c87f_t.jpg

"It was supposed to make the golems see us humans as fellow golems, but when I cast it again to make the rest of the town forget our laws against Mages, it backfired, and the golems started to see themselves as humans. Then, when they saw their 'golem' counterparts, it triggered an unstoppable psychosis, causing them to try and kill their supposed double. If only I had listened to Carl..."

15314607412_be5f723dc6_t.jpg

"...what? Amara, what's going on? Why are you and Captain Sloane bleeding?" Just then, I noticed the bloody corpse across the room. "...is that Dr. Ming?

"Good riddance," Captain Sloane muttered, her chuckle bringing up blood. She grimaced and forced herself to stop. "Officially, I never said that, by the way."

15834016853_8c3a510caa_t.jpg

"Officially, I don't think it matters anymore...this town is through. Mallora...Amara...I'm so sorry. I've kept so many secrets trying to protect you, but I've only made things worse in the process. This whole mess is my fault. I owe you all an explanation..." Father's gaze drifted over to the party of golems that had just attacked him. "Unless you five would like to do it instead?"

The fearsome five studiously stood staring away from the newcomers.

"..."

"Don't worry, I can translate for you."

What would the parties--Heroes and golems--do?

Thormanil lets out a guttural growl, "So ya mean t'tell me that you knocked me out and made, what, a copy of me?"

Golem Thormanil stood silent as a stone, while Arx and Golem Arx approached each other, circling, sniffing, even admiring the other.

OoC: So Mayor Persephone can hear the golems talking after all?

Ellaria stared at the golem duplicate of hers, still clutching a vial of potion in her hand. She did not seem at all threatening, but rather confused about the situation. The fate of this town struck Ellaria hard, seeing everyone butchered down to the small children. If their duplicates were to blame for that, they needed to be destroyed, but somehow Ellaria felt in her heart that this had all been a terrible misunderstanding. Had the golems really thought they were humans, and the actual humans were golems?

"So we are the golems", Ellaria muttered to her companions. She felt like crying, but realized no tears would come. With the illusion broken, she felt empty inside. "We are responsible for most of the destruction in this town, even though we had every intention to save it from the ravaging golems. I wasn't smart enough to realize the truth until it was too late. I am sorry, my friends", Ellaria turned to the other golems. "As your leader, I have failed you. We had no right to exist to begin with, yet I was stubbornly trying to do the right thing and only ended up causing grief and pain."

Golem Ellaria laid down the contests of her satchel to the ground, then spoke to the humans in the room. "Please, make our end swift. I can't bear to live with this guilt."

____________________________

Tears rolled down Ellaria's face as the mayor translated the golems words. It was her! The golem was her! Had she been in the golem's place, she would have done the exact same thing. Seeing her duplicate riddled with guilt ached Ellaria's heart as if she was responsible as well. First the terrible things that had happened in Tumpkin Village, then the loss of Elpis, and now this... Was living in guilt and shame to be her share in life?

Hybros looked from his allies, to the townspeople, to their golem counterparts. It was all very confusing. That... thing... it was a part of his soul. How could he himself do things so wicked? Yet, he would do the same thing. "I... I cannot believe that this is true. Yet, we were kidnapped, and deceived. That would explain our things getting mixed up after camp. I do not understand... who cloned us?"

He looked to his golem counterpart, a mirror image. From a glance, it seemed no different from himself other than the lack of facial features, which were mostly covered by bandages anyway. "Now what? Can these golems exist, or will they continue to misconcieve who is a real person and who is not? Are they still dangerous now that they know what has happened?"

---

The golem Hybros looked on, also confused. How could he be tricked so easily? Perhaps the spell that had bound part of the soul that he had come from left out some aspects of intelligence. In any case, he laid down his arms, and looked to the townspeople and his 'real' self. He spoke, hoping someone would understand him. "I am sorry for what I have done. But we were fooled. I am a part you just as you are a part of me. I could not kill you, nor you me. I will not..."

The two Hybroses seemed to be a standoff. Neither would kill each other yet. Was it possible for them to coexist?

"I think it was the golems that attacked us that did it. Now we know why they had Amara's Garnet--they must have used it to create your doubles."

Mayor Persephone nodded.

15834016853_8c3a510caa_t.jpg

"That's what made us realize we couldn't control this--when our own doubles broke free, attacked us, and fled. Captain Sloane sent some men after them, but..."

"At this point I've resigned myself to my whole force being dead. Won't THAT look great on my resume..." the older woman muttered sarcastically.

"I won't deny, the urge to smash this lot to bits for what they've done to my town is pretty damn strong. Fortunately for them--or unfortunately, I guess, for the Druid--I'm a little indisposed at the moment. And anyway, it's not my call, it's the Mayor's."

The Mayor shrugged.

15834016853_8c3a510caa_t.jpg

"Call me selfish, but at the moment I don't really care what's done with them. I'm just happy my children--both of my children--are safe."

15831623414_2b2286f346_t.jpg

"Selfish. But it's understandable, even if I don't agree with it."

"An hour ago, I would have said they were too violent and dangerous to let live. But after what just happened..." He shrugged. "It's up to you, Heroes."

At this, Captain Sloane frowned.

15831623414_2b2286f346_t.jpg

"Even if we let them live, we can't just let them wander the world unsupervised. They're unstable. At the very least, they'd have to stay with us so we can monitor them. I can't allow them to put anyone else at risk."

Amara suddenly jolted upright--or tried to. Both Mallora and the Mayor rushed to her side.

15834041703_f77f71c87f_t.jpg

"I think I have an idea. At the very least, it should reduce the risks. Dad, can you fetch my Scrolls?"

Mayor Persephone hastened across the room, to the same drawer from which he'd retrieved his Scroll of Gossolalia a few minutes before. Pulling out a stack of frail papers, he gingerly handed them over to the Weather Mage, who leafed through them before finding the one she had in mind.

15834041703_f77f71c87f_t.jpg

"Here we are," she said, "the counterspell to the Perception Filter." She held up a Scroll for the golems to see. "If I cast this, at least you'll be able to see the world as it really is--yourselves as golems, and humans as humans. It's not without risk, though--there's a chance that instead of breaking the spell, it'll break your soul fragment instead, leaving you as a simple, unintelligent golem like most people are used to--a mindless servant to whoever delivers its orders."

15831623414_2b2286f346_t.jpg

"You'd still stay with us either way, but to be frank your other option's death. We'd do our best to make it swift, and painless, but there's too much risk in keeping you alive otherwise."

15834041703_f77f71c87f_t.jpg

"It's your choice," Amara said to the golems, before she turned to the human Heroes, "though you should also have a say. It is technically a fragment of your souls in each of the golems."

What would the Heroes decide?

QM Note: This will be the final choice of the Quest; please post and/or PM me with the fate you choose for your golem duplicate, and I'll wrap things up tomorrow or Sunday with a conclusion.

EDIT: Oh, and since I forgot to mention it, Manfred Ming's loot should be divided, here's the list:

Alchemist's Cheatsheet (Suitable for alchemists, 1/3 chance to make two of the same Mixture on rolls of Shield, accessory)

Smelling Salts

Soma

Mulled Wine

Diluted Arc Potion

Diluted Arc Tonic

Wooden Alchemist's Hammer (WP:8 wood-elemental hammer, hollow [nothing])

OoC: So wait, there's no way to restore the soul fragment to the heroes? So the options are a sentient golem, a unintelligent golem or a dead golem, but not "remove soul fragment from the golem and get it back".

Golem Ellaria slumped on her knees. "I want to die. No... I need to die."

Ellaria herself wiped the tears from her eyes, and turned away from the golem. "She can do whatever she wishes. I cannot decide for her."

Loot Distribution:

Ellaria: Wooden Alchemist's Hammer (WP:8 wood-elemental hammer, hollow [nothing])

Hybros: Alchemist's Cheatsheet (Suitable for alchemists, 1/3 chance to make two of the same Mixture on rolls of Shield, accessory)

Docken: Smelling Salts, Diluted Arc Potion

Thormanil: Mulled Wine, Soma, Diluted Arc Tonic

The duplicate Hybros nodded. "If the the connection breaks, then so be it. I will not be harmed. I am part of you."

---

The real Hybros touched his hat. "It would be nice to have two of me, eheheh..." He saw Ellaria crying, and realized it wasn't the time for jokes. "Ehehm, either way, I would like to keep my... erm, soul, whether in this body or another. Perform the counterspell."

"And what happens now? Those 'golems' that we killed... are they golems or were those the real people? Are you the only villagers left?"

---

The golem Hybros placed a hand on the duplicate Ellaria's arm to comfort her. Do not worry. We are still a part of our real selves, and death of this body will not make us forget. We will be our real selves, and perhaps then we can begin to forgive ourselves. Perhaps some of the damage we have done can be fixed..."

QM Note: Sorry I wasn't clearer! Those are indeed your three choices, but "dead golem" will restore the spirit fragment.
