BrickShelf is one of the most impressive and marvelous LEGO MOCs resources ever.

A great site, a wonderful idea and a masterpiece. I

This whole situation has gotten ridiculous! If Kevin couldn't keep this going, he should have given it to someone who could. If he wasn't up to the responsibility, he shouldn't have started the site. There were a million things he could've done, the least of which was offer up a warning. That would have cost him no time and no effort.

He badly, badly dropped the ball on this one. At first I wasn't sure if this was deliberate or not, but clearly there is no sane option left but to believe this was.

I too WANT to toss him the benefit of the doubt, but after seeing zerostuds vanish with no warning, geekshelf before it with only a 2-week warning... what would one expect me to believe?

I'd also like to think maybe his service was interrupted by entities higher up on the internet ladder, but there'd surely have been SOME kind of impending warning, wouldn't there?

And if it was hacked, would not there be a message relayed to the community by him?

For every defense one can throw out, there's also a counter to it.

Like I said, if I'm wrong, I WANT you to argue with me. Defend away!

Even better, those of us migrating what little we have over to maj... won't that just get large and then vanish too?

I'm still hoping for a reincarnation. Let's not get too emotional. :-/

Any words from Kevin yet?

I've never seen that guy in "public" before.. |-/ Except for Zerostuds though, but that was his own forum..

Now you see, I would make a memorial MOC for brickshelf, but I would have no place to upload the pictures to |-/
Photobucket has been very fast for me latley, and thats how I uploaded the tombstones I made. Plus, PhotBucket lets you directly copy the image coade with image tags.

Well yeah, there's also imageshack, but I was going for humor there :-D

Too nice.

Needs more salt.

The thing being, I'm talking about BS as a site, not this "Kevin". If he did something wrong, so be it. Don't be mean to Brickshelf. It was a good site. That Kevin person has a bad record of shutting down popular sites for no reason, but, I am not memorializing him, but the site.

What the megablock. Luckily I was able to save my MOC-Pics. So my only loss are the BrickingBavaria event pics from 2005. My CAD-Mocs will come up to maj.com if I find the time to rerender and the rest of the old BS gallery, too. I hope that such a thing doesn't occur with maj.com, too and I'm doing regular backups now, so that I never get into such trouble again. And a maj.com dead would be an even worser thing for me, since I'm keeping all! my non-Lego Images there and this are about 1000. My loss is est. 5-15% and much work resulting due to that

Personally I must say that I don't have much faith in maj.com at this moment. Something is telling me that it's a matter of time before maj.com will also be shut down. Apparently it has been happening earlier with this same guy that he shut down popular websites without any notice beforehand.

Um...where was he being disrespectful of the site? *wacko*

I meant that he was saying that my tributes to the site, not "Kevin", was too nice. Perhaps just a mis-understanding.

Here's an interesting discussion on it:

http://news.lugnet.com/general/?n=53767&t=i&v=a

The main creator of the post refers to the horrified users as "whiners".

Hilarity ensues.

When I first saw that BrickShelf was down, I was all gung-ho to see what I could

do to help bring it back up. As the host for Classic-Castle, I do have have a

dedicated server and excess bandwidth, so some help could have been provided.

Now, after seeing the reaction here and elsewhere, I am rapidly starting not to

care if you whiney vultures ever get your photos back.

Kevin provided a basically free service to everyone for YEARS. Everyone used it

without much thought tot he costs involved. Sure, he could have handled this

latest episode better, but for now none of us know the circumstances involved.

I know that *I* would certainly have grown tired of supporting a site for a

bunch of ungrateful users.

And as for the supposed "Lego Community"? Useless. Instead of being a true

community and banding together to help save a pillar of the community, what to

we get? Personal attacks on Kevin and a bunch of whining.

Do something or quit your complaining.

Troy

This Troy forgets to mention that, had Kevin expressed a need for assistance, an ARMADA of people would have shown up at his door in every form possible.

You don't survive over a decade on the internet without gaining trusted servants.

This whole situation is really curious. Should we perhaps have a thread dedicated to information on Kevin since nobody seems to know anything about the guy? I'd like to know everything about his history.

For one, why did he create brickshelf.com if he isn't a LEGO hobbyist?! (Was he at one point?)

It seems like in the past people have offered his site assistance (to give it a better layout and whatnot), but the guy never took up any offers. This guy also seems to be persistent on not COMMUNICATING (I can not emphasize this enough) with the community. Does anyone remember if he gave a reason for shutting zerostuds.com down? From what I remember it simply disappeared after a few days of activity.

And like others have mentioned already, surely someone must still be in control of the website if the back door was shut hours after being opened.

If this is how brickshelf.com has to go down, I'm happy for brickimage.net because at the very least the site will be in the hands of LEGO enthusiasts, and I can bet more communication will be involved.

/Getting steamed, man.

Honestly Troy's comment was just way out of line. To start insulting people over whatever personal reasons he had for defending Kevin's methods is elementary at best. You'd think he'd be able to express himself more like an adult, but to go around like that is just...sad.

I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation for everything that has happened. Whether or not that reasonable explanation shows Kevin in a good or bad light is left to be seen, however I really doubt at this point it's anything positive. I just really hope that someone capable will be taking care of Brickshelf if it's salvaged. The fact that all the pictures are still there shows us that it's salvageable. It's just a matter of seeing how much Kevin wants to screw us over...

I agree with Mr.Syedow on all counts. This "Kevin" character has been very distant and not communicating with the community. Almost all the images and buttons in the Pirate Forum were hosted on brickshelf and need to be repaired!

This has made almost all images on EB and other sites disapear, and does not bode well until a replacment for BS can be found, or BS is salvaged and put under control of a competant person who is willing to communicate with the cmmunity.

Posted

Even if an replacement for Brickshelf is being found, the images will still remain dead, unless every single person updates every link he or she ever posted. In my opinion the only sollution is to take over Brickshelf from Kevin. And thats what Jennifer and Dan (Peeron.com) seem to be working on atm. Lets just wait for that. Maybe they will get an agreement of some sort in a couple of days and brickshelf will be reopened.

Zerostuds was shut down because it didn't become what Kevin wanted it to be--it became infested with kids, people around the age 12. Like I was that time.. He wanted it to be centered around mature AFOL discussion with fellow adults.. I apologise for what I did in my early days. Sorry, guys. :-$

Hmm. Jipay, did I hear your voice?? ;-)

Ok, here's an update on the situation from bricklink.com:

"I have slightly more info than I have stated, but far from the entire story. I do not wish to expand further at this

time so as not to mess up anything that is in the works.

Just be assured that things are being worked on and that BrickShelf is not lost. When more information is available, it

will be presented.

Troy"

So, it appears that all may not be lost, and that there is indeed hope for a brighter LEGO future.

I never liked Peeron's color descriptions, or their attempts to gain power over other Lego community sites... but more power to 'em on this.

I don't even care if my statements of disgust had me banned from a revived Brickshelf, so long as all the hundreds of thousands of links all over the internet from others were restored.

The thing annoying me... the pics are clearly all still there.

Why? WHY close the back door up?

Well, maybe not the best of news, but pretty good news. The best news I could read/hear is: "Brickshelf was salvaged today, and all files and pictures are restored. Kevin, the dis-reputed former owner of Brickshelf, was sentenced to jail time with no bail. A newer, more competent team has taken over the Brickshelf site and the leader is happy to announce: 'I'm Rick James, b***h!'"

Well Troy just seems to be going at it again, using the same knowledge that we all have. Of course the pictures are safe, we all saw them not 5 hours ago! I'm sure that a reasonable solution will be found, but I'm really hard-pressed to listen anything that he says after that last post of his.

And Jinzo, if life has taught me anything it's that this probably has something to do with money :-/ Maybe he closed it up so that he could sell Brickshelf, so that there'd be higher demand from people who want to save their pictures?

It makes sense to me...
