BirdOPrey5 Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 Could probably cut the book into 3 booklets with a knife and some scotch tape to reinforce the binding... Quote
TheFuzz Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 Its pretty obvious why this is called "Detective's Office" and not "Al's Hair and pseudo-apartment." The actual DO is one of the (if not THE) best room in any modular yet. Quote
El Garfio Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 I just opened my copy of DA, and I've got to get something off my chest. I am seriously p*ssed off by the fact that, out of nowhere, Lego decided to put the complete instructions in one book. Firstly, it now has a real "back", like a book, which makes it annoying to put flat on the table. Secondly, I always build modulars together with my wife. So the books being separated by floor (until now) made it very easy to sit at our large table and build away, one floor each. Next time we build it, we switch floors, so it's double the fun. I don't want to have to sit at a computer looking at a pdf. I am now seriously contemplating surfing to "missing pieces" on lego.com, claiming the manual is missing... The manual is available in the instruction section of Lego website. I have it downloaded to a 9 inches tablet and I can put it flat in a table and I can see the details of the sheets without problems and I can easily follow the building process. Quote

TheFuzz Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 I agree completely. And the exceedingly high playability factor has kept me entertained for hours and hours. That and the entire "feel" of the office (and the whole modular, really) is perfect. It's exactly what I'd want. The fire escape caught me by surprise too, adding to the whole feel of the second story. Quote

Withacee Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 (edited) Well that is dishonest. Absolutely! Could probably cut the book into 3 booklets with a knife and some scotch tape to reinforce the binding... Yes, we thought about that, but I really do not want to "butcher" the manual. The manual is available in the instruction section of Lego website. I have it downloaded to a 9 inches tablet and I can put it flat in a table and I can see the details of the sheets without problems and I can easily follow the building process. That is indeed the direction we might have to take. But we have mixed experiences with legibility on digital manuals. I'll give it a go.Thanks, El Garfio. Edited January 25, 2015 by Withacee Quote
LegoSjaak Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Finally finished the whole MOD of the Detective's Office. Did some tiling as well. Hope you like it! Quote

Boettner Builds Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 (edited) Stared and finished this today. Fun build, I LOVE the PI's Office, but overall it is on the small side. It's a REALLY nice break from a standard box building :) I'm going to have to go the make it larger route, but my idea if different than the ones here... Edited February 8, 2015 by redtrooper27 Quote
mapimi Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 I'm on the edge about this one, how do you guys feel about it? Every review I've read has found that it fits perfectly with other modulars yet every picture I see of it attached to other modulars makes it seem out of place. I feel like this could be solved by adding a second-second floor, but not excited enough by the set to get two. Has anyone who had reservations at first come back on their opinion about the set once having built it? Thanks in advance guys Quote
Kristel Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Has anyone who had reservations at first come back on their opinion about the set once having built it? I wasn't excited when the initial images came out, it grew on me when the high resolution images came out, and I loved it when I got to build it. It looks great in real life, and has loads of useful and interesting pieces and details. Quote

LegoGunInstructions Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Brilliant work! Great quality! I will definitely buy it! Quote

Withacee Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 I wasn't in love either, when I first saw the pictures. I agree it's a very nice build. I also found it's really small, but I still like the way that breaks the skyline. Here's our copy dwarfed between Kristel's great Tan townhouse and my own first MOC (pics follow after I get the last bits from bricklink). One almost feels sorry for the poor DA Still, doesn't look too bad, though. Quote

Withacee Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 The two wonderful MOCs seem to validate a lot of the criticism that's been directed at the DO. I must agree here; I only just noticed from the pic, in my MOC, I didn't go overboard on size: 9 bricks height per floor plus a few plates as floorboards. You can even see that Al's hair dresser's first two floors are as high as mine are. Still, they're modulars. The design has to be really bad for us NOT to buy them from Lego. But I can imagine people having doubts about the direction in which this is going. Quote
Off the wall Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Yes, situated between those two MOCs, the DO certainly looks like an inappropriate object in the proverbial punch bowl. Quote

I know I'll eventually get the DO but not as impressed from the outside as other modulars, I know they focussed a lot on play features but my Modulars mostly sit on a shelf so I'll let you guys know what I think of the set once I purchase it Quote
talos Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 It took a really wet and stormy weekend for me to get back to the mods I have been doing to my DO. I managed to get what I want, so far that is, by using my spare parts and a sacrificial Seaside House set..for the blue bricks. Here are some photos. The basic shapes of the design are intact, with my changes mostly to the rear of the set. I think I did a clever mod to the interior of the barber shop. I redid the wall facing the breezeway, and added a sliding door disguised as drawers and grills to maintain the cookie smuggling aspects.. (LOL) I like my solution much better than the Lego designers. I raised up the walls to the full height, adding a colored glass window like the one over the door to the Highlander. I put a few furniture bits into the upper floors, just from what I had sitting around for now. Expanding the interior space makes it a lot easier to get your hands inside to fiddle with it. I hope she can break up that cat fight on the roof..! LOL Quote
juddtaylor Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 Everybody whines about the size. But it's a detective's office and a pool hall in that building. This is seedy-back alley stuff, guys. No private dick is going to be in the fanciest hi-rise there is out there. I don't see lego "going in the direction of smaller modulars" at all, they just provided a level of realism here for this one set, IMO. Quote

I only used two sets and some extra pieces... i guess a few plates for the floor or so..i do not have that in mind very well. But i think you can do the job with 2 sets and a small bricklink order!! Succes! Quote
Withacee Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 (edited) Wow! These MOCs look great. Can't wait to see more! The Tan Townhouse, made by Kristel, can be found here, in case you haven't seen it yet: https://www.flickr.c...57630799159970/ I'll put up some pics of mine (the white one) as soon as I receive the last bits and bobs from Bricklink. Personally, I don't care too much about the sizes, I just notice the last two were a bit smaller. For me, it just adds to the variety. I agree that in case of the DA it could be explained as realism, but we shall see what TLG do over the next few years. As I stated before, they'll have to be very, very crappy for me NOT to buy them. VintageLegoEra Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I received my 2 Sets of DO :) This Thread little changed my mind in building the set as Defult. I am thinking of Building 1 as Stock and the other one will be somthing like and extension with Car, Reception to receive inquiries,...etc.....will be Fun!...:) Quote
