Bobbtom Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 The DO looks really good. It's next on my list to get after Orthanc. Lego is very adept at taking all an AFOL's money. Quote
Headofprops Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 after building the first floor of the DO i was cheesed off about the alley walls ending short of the ceiling as well as how cramped the pool hall and barbers was. I opted to by 2 sets and widen the both sides. now that im finished with it i will likely go back and expand the pool hall side all the way to the back of the base plate so i can fit a nice bar and stools. Off the wall Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 ^ Your use of only one door on the lower level of the pool hall is the way I feel it should be done. It looks good. Nicely balanced. Quote

TheLegoDr Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I plan on doing something similar. Have the door centered, but also have the south centered above it. Then space the second floor windows out differently. Quote

cei Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 It's pretty clear from the picture. The 32x32 brown that came with the DO, and then an additional 16x32. I've got two copies of DO, and this looks like a good way to 'fix' it. Any chance of more pictures, Headofprops? Quote
DrJosephMosch Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Let me start by saying that I really enjoyed building the DO. I do agree that some of the play-ability features of the set are unnecessary but really fun to fiddle around with. I display it between my mirrored PR and the PS, so it fits in perfectly size-wise. See crappy potato photo: But it doesn't fit in between these two buildings style-wise. So I plan to more or less "Earopeanise" the building. In order to do so I was thinking of simply putting a sloped roof over the hero-fists. So I guess my question is if anyone else had this idea and how that worked out. Quote

Headofprops Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 When i expand it i will be expanding on the back side. im thinking of just stretching the whole structure by 4 studs. When i was first remaking the first floor to fit my idea i had planned to build it much wider but as you can see in the second picture my display space is limited i even had to remove my MOC to fit in the DO. AFOLguy1970 Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 ^^^ I really like this way of combining multiple DO's. Instead of building up,you built it outwards. It will certainly add some more room to the interior and it gives you a lot of streetfront space as well. Looking at the photo, if you gave me any incentive to buy a repeat modular, you would convince me to get another Pet Shop. I really like what you did with the red halves of it. Alas funds are limited, and I will have to be happy with one of each. Quote

Ah okay, so you won't widen it any more.. than you won't have a baseplate-problem.. By the way, i like the pool hall better with one door, like you.. maybe i should close on down in my DO-MOD There is one thing.. the DO- looks a bit plain, i did some extra windows in the front.. maybe you should try that as well?? And i also made a balcony on the rear..... Quote
antp Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 (edited) The extra windows in front like you did look much better indeed. 4 studs between each window is too much. Edited February 10, 2015 by antp Quote

Headofprops Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I plan to steal your balcony idea, it adds a much needed element to the rear. I'll try more windows in the front tonight. Quote
talos Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I dunno, making it wider than 32 studs, messes with the proportions of the other modulars to me. I personally don't care for it. I do like the 3 window wide barbershop building though. Quote
Still Raindrop Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 I received the DO for my birthday this year; although I've enjoyed looking at the modular buildings and building on a semi-modular scale, I've never been able to find room in the budget for one (I have a kid, and a second on the way, and up till about 9 months ago I've worked crappy, low-paying jobs). I'm nearly finished, and I have to say I really enjoy it. I also like the story; not only do I find it fun (yes, I'm an adult, but I'm also a writer, and I like a good story setting; I don't think it makes it any more childish at all), but it's also given me some inspiration; I haven't done much building since my 1.5-year-old daughter was born, but now I know that my next modular MOC is going to be a Chinese restaurant to go next door. DrJosephMosch Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 With only about 150 extra parts I modded the DO to better fit into my layout. I added a sloped roof with high windows to give the impression as if it was a newly built loft conversion onto the old building. I moved the water tower onto the other building to have some space, I think of adding a roof terrace for the new built condo. Close up of the windows in the front. I made the backside out of dark gray and gray bricks since I had a few of those lying around. However, no one likes to live in a gray home so I had to borrow a well known fig to help the new flat-owners out. The interiors feature the small kitchen moved from its original place and a small table for two. A bed will follow as soon as the paint job is done. Finally, this is how the modded DO fits into my street layout, between a mirrored PR and the currently under renovation being PS. Criticism welcome. Quote
Lankygit Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I love the rooftop extension Dr Joesph, minimal parts and not too much change to the original structure. If you've got and LLD files, i'd like to see them. Quote

I think you've solved my dilemma so thank you so much! By using you trick I finally can start picturing how the DO will fit into my layout. Quote
ReplicaOfLife Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Adding a mansard roof to the DO was one of the first modding ideas that came to my mind when the firest pictures surfaced. You've done a nice job on it, though I would've completely removed the front of the original roof (where you already took out the hero Factory fists) to get a smoother transition. Quote
Off the wall Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I like the modification. But, I think the blue right side of the building still needs to see the impact of a wrecking ball. Quote

Sure, here you go: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-kf7DS6YodTM1ZrZk1UX0Y2NGM/view?usp=sharing My aim was to add to the building with as few additional pieces than possible. The first design was made with only 150 additional pieces, the final design has around 200 pieces not in the set. Quote
Poisso3 Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Love to roof mod. I think I might borrow that idea once I get around to adding some extra floorspace to the ground floor. Quote
