BirdOPrey5 Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 (edited) Edit- Close up of the changes I made to the roof with some extra pieces from a second DO. Lounge chair for lady in red, extra lights, second sun roof for taller building, second water tank, satellite dish in place of "POOL" sign for top floor, several miscellaneous changes. BirdOPrey5 Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Oh there was an interesting issue with my second DO- It was short one 2x1 "brick" brick and had one extra 2x1 of the brown vertical/horizontal profile bricks so I used that in place of one of the 2x1s you don't really see. For me it was the first time an official LEGO set was missing anything noticeable. My guess is a weight sensor didn't indicate a problem since the extra nearly identical brick was there. Quote
finnbricker Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Thanks Swissbrick! The height seems quite okay now with one floor added. Now only the width of the blue building is disturbing me... By doubling the width (building a mirror-image DO) this problem will go away, too. Requires four sets. Oh my! Quote
Off the wall Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 The width of the blue building is not that appealing. Take out the 'alley' and expand it? I took two DO sets and several hundred parts left over from GE and expanded the pool hall to 32 wide and three stories. That leaves me with a lot of the masonry type bricks and blue bricks to work on a new detective office and barber shop. My pool hall has three tables on the first floor as I was able to piece a third table together with some old parts....although the felt on the table is brown. I suppose I really needed to get motivated and get a picture hosting service. Still finishing out the pool hall interior. Big screen TVs are on the wall but I need to build the bar. Quote

El Garfio Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 My first attempt to recreate The Detective Office. Sorry for the quality of the pics, I haven't taken pics with that camera in a long time and it was a disaster (the lens were dirty, it hasn't been properly configured: flash, fixing shaking or taking pic in macro mode. As I have said, it's my first attempt and I have done it quickly with the parts I had more closely. In the next attempt I would try to recreate the half stud windows technique, improve some botched jobs that I had to do when I was short of some pieces. And of course, I will work harder in the indoor decoration. I try to make it the more LEGO purist that I can, but I have to recognize first that I want to use the front columns from wange (I try to avoid LEGO Technic because I don't like it) and the sluban roof cornices because are more alike than the flat LEGO inverted slopes. The rest of non LEGO pieces that you detect, are used because I haven't enough LEGO pieces in a properly color. All suggestions and comments are welcome. Quote
Off the wall Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 TLG is laughing all the way to the bank... AFOLs buy two sets to make up for their shortfall... Cha Ching of the cash registers Maybe. But, if you've ever had something like golf or classic cars as a hobby, this Lego stuff is totally minor league. Collecting modulars, if I have to buy four DOs to get what I want.....well, it's only a one a year occurrence. As far as the future goes, I'm pretty much planning on having to buy multiple copies of future releases to get what I want. Good strategy on TLGs part. Quote

I always wonder am I the only one who doesn't bother connecting the modulars using the technic pieces? Seems useless and just more work when I want to take one out. Quote

I was annoyed by all the inside details and storyline prior to build but at the end, the set provides a lot of building pleasure - OK too bad it needs 2 IMO to look nice next to other modulars, even with one you will get worth your money.. The design itself looks more cartoonish than previous one, after building the feeling is not that strong anymore. Actually I would place this as the 4th best modular to build: CC, GG, FB, DO, PR, PS, GE, TH, PC Note that it surpasses the PR, I would never had imagined that when I first saw the pics.. One thing I noticed since PR, it is easier to build than previous ones... You don't look for pieces for ages, the bags are filled in a way that you never spend more than 20 sec to find a piece. Not sure it is good, as the pleasure lasts less... Anyhow, a must buy! Edited January 11, 2015 by SwissBrick Quote
ReplicaOfLife Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I always wonder am I the only one who doesn't bother connecting the modulars using the technic pieces? Seems useless and just more work when I want to take one out. I have two places where I put my modulars. One is on a low shelf in my home office, the other in a glass cabinet. The ones in my home office are connected using pins, the one in the glass cabinet aren't simply because they're easier to get out of there that way. I still have some wiggle room on the low shelf, so I can easily pull them apart. I'm kinda pedantic in that regard and want them to line up perfectly when on display, using the pins helps a lot there. Quote

Good strategy on TLGs part. I don't believe this is TLG's strategy. A very low percentage of collectors buying DO will purchase multiple copies to combine into a larger structure. Quote

Off the wall Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Much better. When expanding the pool hall to 32 wide, I decided to go with just one door that's centered in the middle. I replaced the newspaper box with an ATM. I'd also just center 'Al's' on the sign. Looks good....especially the expanded upper levels of the blue building. Nice work. Quote

Thank you OtW,... so far i did only the ground level.. the pictures i posted are photshopped from the Original set-pictures....but i think it can be done with a few extra bricks or tricks.... I'm thinking of dividing the pool hall into two separate rooms, or have a wall with a door in it.. The poolhall will have 2 poolbilliarts and there is a darts-corner.. Maybe a bar..if there is space enough... First i'll go up tot the other levels, and see if it all works.. after that, i will have another take on the interior... The barber worked out fine.. put in both mirrors and chairs...only one chest (secret door) and exchanged the wigs ofcourse... Will start with the detective's office tonight and should do another attempt on the 'R' for 'Al's Hair'...... Quote
Poisso3 Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 or this is also a possibility... This configuration looks the best out of the two. Quote
LegoSjaak Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 This configuration looks the best out of the two. I think i'll go for this one.. several people chose this option.. By placing two darkbrown 'hallway' parts next to eachother, it seems there is an extra appartment.. i'll go for this one... starting tonight! Quote

LegoSjaak Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Go for a lower-case "r". Dan-147 Dan... i think that this is a pretty good idea... i hadn't thought of it myself... thanks, i'll try it out tonight!! How about Al's Cuts? I'll use that if i can't work out 'Al's Hair'.... Quote
Mestari Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 "Al's cuts" has already been misread by several people so it's safer to go with "hair " ;) Quote
