LegoSjaak, nice job on the expansion! How does the insides look now?

Here some pictures..

AWESOME modifications or combinations there 'LegoSjaak'.......I really like the expanding of the pool bar into more like a bar/pub.....I hope to see a just as cool interior ?

Brick On 'LegoSjaak' !

...not surprising, i think, as i used almost only parts from 2 DO sets.

That is really good looking, 'LegoSjaak'. Good job! Can't wait to see the interiors!

...hope you like it! 16262907296_c2f50987c0.jpg16288833655_299b8bb6cb.jpg16102699129_9a684fc1da.jpg16101486510_ef4cc0a9b1.jpg15668962013_9cce97566e.jpg15668961163_8f4d3f9a0f.jpg16287041711_785a5642e0.jpg16102692679_646c76ba8c.jpg16287038951_aaa1b17865.jpg16287994612_3b2f3767ba.jpg15666412024_46af5873e8.jpg

I love what LegoSjaak has done with the DO. It's too bad it takes 2 DO sets to make this modular worthwhile.

Agree. What's surprised me on the Lego.com website is the response to my review. Anytime I leave an evaluation of less than five for a product, I usually get hammered by Lego apologists. I gave the DO a '3'. I'm surprised because the response is running about 50-50 between thumbs up and thumbs down for my review.

^ I took a look after your review was mentioned here, and it was a lot more negative to positive, I added a thumbs up and I think a few others here did also. I always like to see some real crit, usually an opposing view gets pounded down by the other more popular side that can't stand any views other than their own.

I think that whomever polices the reviews on S@H is overworked, there hasn't been a new review added to the DO there for about 4 days, the review I posted a couple days ago has not appeared yet.

This statement right here I think is the most potent and pivotal summary argument regarding the DO and many of us AFOLs.

Hahaha LEGO apologists. Sounds a lot like a certain Eurobricks environment as well.

I thumbed up the review as well. Basically, if you have any sort of criticism for the product, you are going to get thumbed down on the site. I think the review definitely gives some insight into the product, especially when compared to other modulars. It is far more informing than one liners such as "Best Modular Ever!","Awesome set!", and "My favorite".

True colossus... it is indeed too bad that it takes two sets... On the other hand.. have a look at the pet shop...rooms inside are just as big, but i think there was less complaint about that.. When i see original pictures of the DO now, i think it really is small.. This 10-th set is the 7-th set that i bought a second copy of, just to make a proper building that appeals more to me.. Overall i like the original designs.. so i left the designs as they are..only made them wider and larger.....

Legosajak does some great work. Showing the true potential of the design. While I've followed his example by simply expanding the GE and TH, I've also gone down the other road. I bought one each of PR and DO. I built them according to the instructions. Then, I put them in my city. After building per instructions and reviewing the instruction book and parts list, I bought two more of each and treated them like parts packs. My three story PR and cooking school is done. Now, I've competed a three story pool hall with three pool tables on the first floor, an area for darts on the second floor and a bar on the third floor.....so the drunks can fall down the stairs. Been there ,done that. I'm currently working on a three story detective agency. The detective takes the entire second floor. Half the first floor is the barber shop and the other half is a starbucks (stickers ordered from eBay). The third floor will probably be an apartment for the detective. On this building, I've recessed the design about twenty studs deep and eight wide in the middle where there will be an open area with plants. The entrance to the coffee shop and barber shop will also be in this area. The stairs for the top two stories will be on the outside back of the building. This one is taking some time.

Fortunately, I've accumulated a modest parts inventory from the multiple GEs and THs that I bought. Not all of the colors are what I want, but I don't feel like making and more PAB orders.

I know. Flickr. Someday

It's all a matter of perspectives and trade-offs between space, price, and last but not least, time.

The DO is the first modular I bought -- the Simpsons House has similar complexity but it's not a modular -- and I think it's really good.

I have a display space that includes trains, so real estate space is truly precious to me.

A 64-wide modular would dominate the entire layout, so if it was on the market, I'd never buy it.

While sometimes frustrating, I consider it a plus that even the most "advanced" set can be seen as a "starter" set to be expanded upon.

If you just build it following instructions and just display, where's the fun? what did you add on top of the designer's work? :)

I don't love the expansion, but it is a great start. Definitely things I'd do differently, but we are all different builders with different ideas. But I am liking the wider barbershop area. I prefer the wider interior of the pool hall; however, I don't love the wider front facade.

It makes me wonder if maybe I should add more to these sets, although I don't have the budget to buy 2 of any of the Modulars. Too many other sets require my money..grr.

I gave thumbs up to you, OTW, and also to the review titled "What's with all the Cookies?" It's kind of an important point that the "storyline" of this modular has to be explained in a way that the PR's "story" doesn't--there's a couple and the dude has a ring. If you lose the ring, the building still makes sense. The DO doesn't.

Bored of the negativity around this set now. I get it, some of you think it's too small. Don't need to hear this post after post after post. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If you do like it but think it's too small then buy two (that'll really teach TLG a lesson won't it!). But please can we have less of the same comments again and again and again. I've got better things to do than trawl through repetitive comments trying to find any meaningful discussion.

Cheers

I love what you're doing here, but I gotta say I was hoping in this picture that the flower cart would also be twice as big...

i do have two flowercarts, but one is already pretty big....but i must say you gave me some inspiration.....

LegoSjaak, yours looks really promising now, only thing I don't wuite like is that the brown 'building' grows out over onto the pool hall. Not sure wether that's realistic at all, at least in cities in Europe or North America.

How wide is your version, btw? Looks like 56 studs?

Roger, my version is indeed 56 studs.. I can imagine you do not like the brown building, growing over the pool hall, but when you would see it in real bricks, it really gives the building a lot of depth.. when you see it, it seems that there is another building in the background...and it intends that there are 3 buildings.. Yesterday i finished the roofing.. it is not ready, have to do some work on the backside and the interior.. but here is an update...

I have to say, the finished set really does give that impression, and suddenly I like it a lot. Well done!:sweet:

Thanks for letting us know what we can discuss.

Let's do this on a reverse. Build a bakery Modular that is a front for illegal flowers...

I'm thinking one flower cart is too ginormous. I didn't get one because it sold out so quickly, but even then, I think I'd want to modify it. It seems too tall maybe. I don't know.

PM me with where to send one and I'll mail one to you. I have at least one extra. Free.

Right, cause hearing the same "I love this modular" over and over again is meaningful and non repetitive.

You like it? Just go buy one! Same logic. See how it doesn't work?

No one appreciates someone trying to shut down half the conversation. If you got better things to do then by all means, do them.
