I got time today to start my DO mods, I expanded the ground floor, making the Highlander extend all the way to the edge of the baseplate. Moved a few things around and added a bar and some small tables. I am using spare parts I have on hand, since I haven't bought a 2nd copy of the DO yet. I want to enlarge the upper floor too, but am still trying to think that through. For now, I put a removable flat roof over the enlarged bar area. Enlarging the barbershop is going to need a few more dark blue bricks..which I don't have. They are not cheap either, on BrickLink! Here are a few photos of how it looks.

Talos, even with that limited space you had to work with, you have captured what I feel to be the true spirit of what The Highlander and the building as a whole should have been.

It really does appear as a whole and complete establishment now. Praise to your excellent presentation of a bar.

Hmm... this really is the first time that I am thinking about buying a second set of a modular which I already have...

I personaly would prefer a barber shop like the one from 'LegoSjaak', combined with a pool bar the way 'talos' built it. I even would leave the balcony on top of the pool bar, just swaping one window from the DO for a door.... decisions, decisions...

Btw, nice interiors 'LegoSjaak' and 'talos'!

I feel with you. Seeing all those expansions and redecorations truly is inspiring. Made me rethink my own modding plans for when I get around to buy two or more copies of it several times already. :excited:

Talos, what you did to the Highlander is what I was thinking of doing to mine. That bar is just screaming to go to the edge of the plate and not be so limited. To bad Al's can't be expanded the same way with out moving the stairs.

Thanks for all the comments on what I did with my DO. Its fun to take what is given and customizing. Its what Lego is all about ;-) My extra groom from the TH is enjoying his new job as bartender! Haha.

I agree about the dart board placement, it is kind of in a hazardous location! I must admit, I was building away and had it all put together and realized, I forgot to put the dart board back! I need to examine it a little more to relocate it to the opposite wall, maybe..

Talos, that is a nice addition.. i know myself how hard it is to squeeze in some extra's, even when the Highlander has a twice bigger room. I'll try to make some kind of bar in it as well, but have to search for some brown parts here and there.. It needs a bar, that is clear.. Where else should you get the drinks...first walk to the Parisian Restaurant, order a drink, take it outside and go to the 'High'....? I'll also do some tiling on the first and second floor.. it earns to be tiled, i think.....

I read it before you edited it and I must say I really laughed out loud, or lol, as the kids use to say!

Thanks. I had to edit it or it would have started a flame war with those who take these things far too seriously.

When building the flower cart, with its built-in cookie barrel and classical style minifig face, I came to think that perhaps Jamie originally intended the cart to be a part of the actual set. And then, for reasons of cost, they decided to leave the cart out and finally made it a polybag instead. Has this idea crossed anyone else's mind?

^That's interesting. It could very well be true, but it may have been a polybag from the start to entice people to buy the set upon release. It is interesting how it ties so well together. I don't recall the hot dog vendor from a few years ago going very well with what was available at the time, or was that when the Mixer was available for the first time? I bought Orthanc and received the hot dog vendor, so it didn't line up with what I bought I guess I should say...

I do like the addition of the Highlander. I would consider doing something similar. I actually like the flat roof on the back too. I still think it needs work on the front in general, but I like the increase in size. For whatever reason I have a mental block on using up the entire back of the baseplate. I feel I need to leave SOMETHING for some reason. Officially it was like that, but Palace Cinema changed things, right? The back corner baseplate is entirely filled in for the theater, whereas CC and GE both had little cutouts.

I wanted to mod TH, but I was leaving some extra studs on the back exposed, maybe I should push it back farther. It isn't like I have a vibrant city on the backs of the buildings.

There also was the 'Balloon Cart' that popped up as a freebie right after the Mixer set was released. It also melded with that set.

I am enlarging the barber shop in the DO set, but am leaving the back corner open, I also think there has to be some space behind it. I still have all the access holes for the cookie theme. I am liking how I changed it, I just can't show it yet, not had time to finish it.

I think the balloon stand came out when the mixer was released, so there was a tie in there. Can't remember exactly when the hot dog stand came out, but I think it pairs well with Palace Cinema. At least in my neck of the woods there are hot dog carts outside the old theaters still.

@talos: Excellent addition, but i think the Dart board is not fitting were it is...It need a little more space or everyone who will enter the pool hall will be smashed with the dart loooooool ;)

Cheers

I agree and what Talos did is more in line with how I was considering expanding it. Backwards to the baseplate. Moving the stairs is the easy part. Rather than extending back from the back wall, pull the back half of the building rearward and fill between the front and rear. This way the stairs get pushed to the back.

Indeed. I was thinking on the same space. buy doing this, a little modification should be done which i believe it will be easy for you @talos ;)

That's right! I completely forgot about that balloon cart. That was a good tie in with the mixer. I think I missed out on that one too. I wonder why they had the hot dog vendor during that summer then. I would have purchased Orthanc that July when it came out (or late June for VIP)..hmm odd

I do not think it is for reason of cost, as we did get the flower cart anyway with ordering the DO.... It is just to make it more attractive that everyone buys it in the first week of january, instead of waiting for it untill it is offered cheaper at other shops... People get the idea that the flower cart is part of the DO.. so it is a must have..and the only way to get it, is to buy it at lego.com for the full price.. It is just as the Winter Village set.. the promotional was in the same style as Santa's house.. so it was a must have for the one who wanted to purchase Santa's Workshop... It is just to push people over the line of buying one.. A lot of AFOL's will tell their partner: If i purchase it now, it'll come with an extra set...so let me buy it now..!!! That is at least my idea...
