Posted November 29, 201410 yr Hello, was wondering where do you build your Lego creations? On table, bed, floor etc.? And how do you organize parts near you? I mean you go every time you need to get some bricks from your cabinet or...? When I was a child I always built on the floor. It was the best, lot of space, stack of Legos just lying on the floor. But I haven't so many bricks back then. I haven't need to sort them in any way. Now, after many years, I don't feel so comfortable on the floor. Maybe coz of lack of carpet? ;) Dunno. I found that moving big dinner table near huge bed (got them in same room) works best for me. I take boxes/containers with sorted Lego's and stack them all over me on bed and on the table. I sit on the bed and in front of me I leave big spot on the table for building itself. It is the most comfortable for me. Also works for 2 people party :) What works best for you?
November 29, 201410 yr I usually build on the ground. In the colder days I put something over the floor so my but doesnt freeze Oh and some kneed padding would also be nice. Building stuff on table is hard because everything juts tends to fall down
November 29, 201410 yr I have a big table dedicated to LEGO (it is a bit of a mess right now, but meh).
November 29, 201410 yr I also build on the floor, but mostly because it is so large AND I don't have a table. I like the ability to spread out with my builds, BUT it is really bad on my knees and back while I'm on the floor. I'm only 30 but my joints feel much older... so that doesn't work so well for me anymore. One day I'll get my LEGO room together with a build station/table. Maybe with a small lip/barrier around the edge so pieces won't fall off so easily...
November 29, 201410 yr On a kitchen table with a lot of natural light that over looks a small lake/pond. The table has a opaque glass top that's expandable. Very easy to organize and sort parts.
November 29, 201410 yr I mostly use our dining room table. The dining room is right next to the LEGO room so it isn't too far to bring the parts in. It does require quite a bit of time to move things back and forth if i need lots of various parts since my wife doesn't enjoy me leaving everything out...
November 29, 201410 yr My bed. Trouble is, I often open bags then have to stay up late finishing a build. I'd use the dining room table if it wasn't covered with my sister's stuff (the kitchen table is too small). Obviously, we need to clean our apartment
November 29, 201410 yr I used to build on my bed but as my collection grew I upgraded to a corner table. Plates and bricks go in the drawers on the table and other common parts go in the trays underneath which makes for pretty quick building.
November 30, 201410 yr I build the small stuff in the attic where all our Lego is set up, but when it comes to modulars or other big builds, I prefer the dining room table. That last option comes with mandatory cleaning up.
November 30, 201410 yr I have all my Lego sorted near a pool table with a ping pong topper on it with a large cutting mat on that. I build and sort there, except now when I am building my Christmas Village upstairs and I run up and down the stairs a bajilllion times every evening. The Village used to be around the tree -since 2006- but it is going up on the dining room table this year because we have a new puppy who will gobble every piece I drop.
November 30, 201410 yr I build on an IKEA Expedit 1x5 shelf, lying down, and then my daughter plays with the sets after! Sitting on the floor ends up hard on the body though...
December 2, 201410 yr If I'm just assembling a kit per the instructions, any flat surface will do: coffee table; dinner table; ottoman with a board over it; TV dinner tray on my lap; whatever. If I'm working on a MOC, I work almost exclusively in my home office. There I have both a dedicated table set-up as well as my desk itself if I need more room. My parts cases fill one wall and when I'm in "full MOC" mode my office becomes a disaster of trays, cases, tubs, tins, baggies and piles. My wife is very understanding of my Lego hobby and I respect that (and her) enough to sequester the construction zone so that she doesn't have to deal with the spillover of WIPs. I never work on the floor though (unless you count working on something so big that _it's_ sitting on the floor so I can reach the top comfortably while seated). I did grievous harm to one of my knees some three decades ago and the ability to get down to floor level and back up is a becoming more and more of luxury these days for me.
December 2, 201410 yr I use the table in the conservatory, normally open up the required bag and then organise the pieces before starting to put them all together. Edited December 3, 201410 yr by MikeF
December 3, 201410 yr For years I used to build on the floor (and occasionally on the bed), but recently I moved all my building activities on the LEGO-dedicated table, 150x75 cms in size, with bricks sorted in boxes all around and under it. I think I must be coming into age when comfort would become more important than joy when building.
December 4, 201410 yr I recently finished my LEGO room (pics in signature link) so I do most of my building in there on the floor.
December 4, 201410 yr I used to sit on the carpeted floor and have my bins and bags scattered around me working on pillowcases - I use pillow cases so the "carpet fibers" didn't get stuck in my building. I am 100% anti-carpet when it comes to my LEGO pieces touching or even spilling on carpet. Now that I am in my 30's, sitting is being too hard on my knees and the rest of my body. With my new place in 3-4 months, I can get a huge train layout built where I can build on the layout it self and roll a chair around sitting while building.
December 5, 201410 yr I build on my study table in my office if the set fits. If it's a set with a big footprint or has a lot of sorting needed I use my kitchen table. I put down this thick plastic mat thing so my fiancee doesn't worry about scratches.
December 5, 201410 yr I have a corner of my bedroom dedicated to Lego building. 4 tables and a chair! Edited December 5, 201410 yr by iamwhoiam
December 5, 201410 yr Was doing it on the floor but really not a good thing for the back so I am planning to setup a dedicated area with tables etc during the holidays.
December 5, 201410 yr When I'm building large sets like the CC houses, I build them on the floor because there is enough room for all the parts. Smaller sets and often my MOCs are built at my desk, where it is a lot more comfortable to sit and build. However there is always a great mess afterwards and the fun with (re)sorting of the spare parts starts
December 6, 201410 yr I build wherever there is a free spot available that isn't occupied by a pile of LEGO. ;D
December 6, 201410 yr I build on a desk, which I do sometimes find a little small (about 2 feet by 4 or 5), especially when half of it is covered with containers/sorting trays! But that way, I can have most of my LEGO sorted into the drawers on either side of me and the rest on the floor right next to me. I could use a long table on one side though.
December 8, 201410 yr Most building goes on the floor. Although I'd like to get a table of some kind for my room, cause sometimes my legs fall asleep during long builds.
